UTSA might have a couple of break out Defensive lineman this year as well in Ashaad Mabry (6’3 315lbs Jr) who is a transfer from Oklahoma St and DE Robert Singletary (6’2 250lbs Jr) who is a transfer from Baylor and played in all 13 games as a true freshman for the Bears

Southern Miss regularly gets players that might otherwise choose a power conference team due to proximity and the willingness to out-recruit those teams for these players. Some of these guys are high three stars (meaning they would have had four stars next to their name had they chosen an SEC team). Several had P5 offers and chose Southern Miss anyway.

I should also point out that we have two seniors at LB (Octavious Thomas, who plays the hybrid "bandit" position, is a RS Junior I believe). We are also deep in the secondary, where there is a good chance our Thorpe Award watch list guy (Deron Wilson) won't have the best season of the guys back there.

What Southern Miss fans need to keep in mind is that we gave up 37.8 points per game on defense last year. We could be 7-10 points per game better and still not be very good.

....or we could be scary on the opposite side of the ball...running a no-huddle will always be an issue with that side of the field...10-7 games, unless played in a monsoon, are most likely a thing of the past.

What Southern Miss fans or ANY college football fan needs to keep in mind is that Elloss Johnson and Tommy West are no longer at USM.......it's pointless to try to put any stock into any type of stat from last year.

RE: USM's D-Line this year is gonna be SICK!!
I'm with Stinky on DE Michael Smith. He was little under sized as a freshman last season, but left the weight room this Summer around 270. He is our next sack master. I'm more concerned about the secondary as our Thorpe award candidate sustained an ankle injury last scrimmage that should keep him out 6-8 weeks. Some young corners must step up. Also of note a true freshman has really pushed our bandit end guys for some playing time. Jaboree Poole #88 6'3" 240 has really pushed his way into consideration for playing time with his performance through the first two scrimmages. He is a strong ass country boy that came in benching 400lbs on Summer workout test day. I look for him to take Octavious Thomas's reps before the season is over.

But I do think that this years group has alot of potential. I think we will be even better next year! All but one of those guys return.

Sr. Thornton and Jr. Nunez will both be play in the NFL. Crayton and Robinson are both Fr., both have tremedous power. They will play all 4 years they are here.

Thomas, Smith, and McCullum are long athletic guys on the ends. And Dylan Bradley may be the most athletic guy on the d-line, with a great combo of quickness and strength.

But what they have to do is play smart and play well as a unit. That's what will make them great.

Yep, one period where all 6 guys in the DL rotation and one of the LBs played in the NFL.

Another thing that will help the defense this year is our Offense will run 10-15 more plays per game.

Would you prefer I go back to 2010 when Duggan was on staff and we scored 43, 44, and 50 points...and lost all three games?

The 37.8 points per game was a starting point for reference's sake, not a SJ-style experiment in flawed and broken logic.

RE: USM's D-Line this year is gonna be SICK!!
Freshy, in '10 we had Todd Bradford as DC. Duggan was only LB coach. If you remember Bradford ran a 4-3 zone defense and we were consistently getting beat in the air. We couldn't make a stop on hardly ANY 3rd or 4th and long....the 3rd and long against ECU in '10 where they scored the go ahead from like the 40 yd line is a play that sticks out in my mind.

In '11 Duggan was CO-DC as well as LB coach with Dan Disch also as CO-DC and we went to a 4-2-5 and played man-defense....

About our DLine??? Are they drunk? I am worried about our DLine. If you ask me we have too many LBs pretending to be DEs. It will be better next year witht the addition of Ricardo Williams but this year I still worry.

I think we'll be all right. I just hate that Armonze Daniel got moved when he was supposed to be such a top LB when he came in. I hope lack of depth didn't knock a potential future NFL'er out of position and in a spot he'll never really play.

RE: USM's D-Line this year is gonna be SICK!!
Best DLines that I've ever seen at USM:
1981 - finished #1 in scoring defense. Small but REALLY fast. Shut down the wishbone consistently. Richard Byrd (Oilers) and Moochie Allen were key reserves. Baylis played in the USFL and CFL until '94.
DE - George Tillman 6-3 230
DT - Charlie Jenkins 6-2 245
NG - Jerald Baylis - 6-0 215
DT - Larry Alford - 6-2 245
DE - Rhett Whitley - 6-3 220

1999 - finished #9 in total defense. ALL played in the NFL. Daleroy Stewart (Cowboys) was a key reserve.
DE - Adalius Thomas 6-2 270 - played all 11 positions on defense one game for the Ravens. Made the pro bowl a few times.
DT - John Nix - 6-1 310 - played for the Dallas Cowboys.
DT - DeQuincy Scott 6-1 275 - played for the San Diego Chargers. Also an exceptional baseball player for USM.
DE - Cedric Scott - 6-5 275 - played for the NY Giants.

The bar is set VERY high for us USM fans.

those 2 squads were as good as you could ever want.
81 team went 16 qtrs. without allowing a td. Not just against a bad schedule either. It was 2nd half of bama. back to back shutouts at north texas and Memphis. Held m state to 2 fgs and finally gave up a 3rd qtr td to florida state in a 56-14 route.

One correction: 58-14 (30-0 halftime lead; 51-0 third quarter lead) rout that was televised by ABC. Collier came out of the game with a 44-0 lead. Our backup QB Sellers threw a 50+ yard TD on his first possession upping the lead to 51-0. The scrubs came in after that. FSU's first team offense finally made its first score (a TD) late in the third against our third string defense. However, the last few minutes of the first half and the first part of the third quarter were preempted for coverage of the landing of the second space shuttle mission. Earlier that season FSU had beaten Ohio State (36-27), LSU (38-14) and Notre Dame (19-13) all on the road. Bobby Bowden still calls this game the most humiliating defeat of his career.

A couple of great stories came from that game.
Years later thru a mutual friend I got to know Rod O;barr. A few years before that, fsu came to the rock and was ahead like 10-14 pts late in the game. They used their time outs to get the ball back and go score again. they were trying to climb in the polls and actually made their 1st orange bowl that year.
At the half with a goose egg on the board, our old oc Whitey Jordan reminded the srs of the fsu visit. "you boys remember when they came to Hattiesburg?? Let go out there this half and beat those son of a ******* just as bad as we can"
O;barr said he made the mistake late in the game of going out of bounds in front of Bowden. Bowden grabbed his jersey with both fists and yelled at rod " YOU TELL THAT SUMBITCH OVER THERE HES RUNNING UP THE (*&(&(& SCORE!! THIS ONE IS GONNA COME BACK TO HAUNT HIS ASS"
Yea he got us a couple times after. esp after jeff bower fired Jeff Bowden. But we will always know we got under bobby's skin that day.

USM's D-line:

DE 6'4 264 Michael Smith
DT 6'3 308 Khyri Thornton
DT 6'2 300 Rakeem Nunez
DE/OLB 6'3 234 Octavius Thomas

Backups:

DE 6'4 245 Daz McCullum
DE/OLB 6'3 250 Jerry McCorvey
DT 6'2 280 Adam Williams
DT 6'3 295 Jerry Harris
DT 6'2 280 Christopher Robinson
DT 6'1 300 Rod Crayton
DE 6'6 243 Will Freeman
DE/DT 6'1 255 Dylan Bradley

Think you're forgetting (or maybe you are younger) our tradition on the DL. I'm not sure any of those guys would be seeing PT on several of the 90's DLs--and very few on some of the 00s.

I'm not really sure I see how they can even be compared to 2011, at this point.

I'm excited about the unit too, and I think they will be good. But they were reserves in 2011 and a part of the worst defensive unit in school history last year--and those are the ones with experience. A little more proof is needed before mentioning them in the same breath as past USM DLs.
