would you consider okie southern? i always look at oklahoma as texas' little brother

Yeah I would consider okie tSouth. Mods how do I add Oklahoma?

what about arizona and new mexico? i feel the south has a culture distinct all its own. from the mason dixon line to north of florida and east of texas. that's the south in my mind. oklahoma and texas to me bring in mind more of the pioneer west

The se portion of OK has plenty of southern culture as well as a native population of alligators.

that is certainly interesting. i love pockets of america like that. but my point is is that that (i believe i can correctly say that phrase, maybe?) isn't inductive to oklahoma as a whole. okc and tulsa, while i've never been, might as well be texas and texas sure as shoot won't have any other distinction other than texan, lord love them. i've only stopped for gas in amarillo and met nobody

I've been through parts of Eastern Texas like Galveston, Texarcana, etc.

I've been through OK and Tulsa.

I don't know if Oklahoma should be considered a Southern State or not. It's more of a Western State, like Texas as a whole. It's weird to describe. It's like Missouri in a way.

Oklahoma is undeniably southern. Southeastern Oklahoma is pretty much like northern Louisiana. Eastern Oklahoma is basically like Arkansas. It has it's own southern identity aside from Texas. Texas is similar, but different. Oklahoma resembles Arkansas more so than Texas.

RE: Best Southern State?
Oklahoma is not the south. When most people refer to the south, they're referring to the southeast.

The south central and southeast comprise the greater south. Oklahoma is culturally and geographically part of that region. The south is a huge region with many sub regions that all share a common cultural and genetic history.

I think we are all aware of the problem many southerners have in thinking anything north or west of them is not southern. I have family in Alabama that considers Tennessee part of the midwest and North Carolina part of the northeast.

Oklahoma was a confederate controlled territory, all five civilized tribes were part of the confederacy, the confederate flag still flies over the state and most of Oklahoma's settlement prior and during the runs came from other southern states.

You personally don't have to include it, but saying the culture in Oklahoma isn't southern is being naive.

That second point is a good one. I've been all over the south and there's a competition for who's more south than everyone else. It's still hard to think of Maryland as the south.

I agree and I will say this. The south ends in Oklahoma. Once you get west of I 35 and north of I 40 it starts to taper off. I will also say that the population also tapers off.

A great way to determine where the cultural south ends and begins is to look at two major factors

Dialect and religious affiliation.

Yep, these are the country type. Guitars, reefer and Lynyrd Skynyrd. They live way out in the sticks and hate the man. They are the black sheep in my family but they are really fun to be around.
