OT: College Sports Great Ironies and Quirks.
Add to the list, throw out things that are funny, don't make sense or interesting.

1. Wake Forest isn't in Wake Forest, NC
2. University of Chicago is in the B1G and plays no Division One sports.
3. Syracuse's Carrier Dome was named after a gift from the Carrier Air Conditioning Corporation but has no Air Conditioning.
4. No one can keep straight what cities Iowa and Iowa St are located in.
5. What's a Hoya?
6. UT-Austin, UTEP and UTSA all use Orange. UTEP and UTSA use the same hand signal.
7. East Carolina is in North Carolina
8. NY has no Flagship State School
9. Sewanee used to be in the SEC
10. The cramped, small campus of Tulane had the 80,000 seat Tulane Stadium: annual host of the Sugar Bowl and three Super Bowls
11. The largest Private University in the US plays Division Three Athletics (NYU) and one of the smallest (Wake Forest) plays in a Power 5 conference.
12. America Samoa per capita is the greatest recruiting area in the world for Football Players.

RE: OT: College Sports Great Ironies and Quirks.
There are two Miami's in Division I and neither is located in a city named Miami.

The Missouri Valley is the second oldest conference but no school has played every season in the league even though there is one charter member in the league. The SWAC is third oldest and has one charter member left, Southern is fourth oldest and has no charter members left. Yet the oldest (Big 10) has six charter members left and five that have played every season in the league.

West Virginia and Georgia played the only Sugar Bowl game played outside of New Orleans and Arkansas State and Southern Miss played the only New Orleans Bowl not played in New Orleans (the games relocated to Atlanta and Lafayette respectively after Katrina).

All schools in the University of Texas system are required to have orange as one of their colors.

Several do look alike because as was pointed out, every UT system school has to have orange as one of their colors and most of their schools chose orange and (some shade of) blue

Orange & Blue

UT-San Antonio
UT-Arlington
UT-El Paso
UT-Brownsville (merging with UT-PanAm)
UT Tyler

Orange & White

UT-Permian Basin
UT-Austin

Orange & Green

UT-Pan America
UT-Dallas

On #4 it's always Kansas/KST for me. I have a friend that is a Jayhawk alum and half the time I ask about Manhattan. The other half I ask about Lawrence.

Illinois is the only State to have all four compass points represented as a University.

Northern Illinois
Eastern Illinois
Southern Illinois
Western Illinois

Additionally, each is NCAA Division One.

I thought UTEP's looked like UTA's? maybe wrong, i have never been to texas.

A lasting tradition of the SouthWest Conference is that every school in Texas has a handsign. There is only so much that you can with hand so you see a lot of duplication.
FBS:
UT - Raised index and Pinky, closed middle and ring

A&M - varies per class, but most common the "Thumbs up"

Tech - Index finger and thump extend, middle/ring/pinky closed to form pistol shape

Baylor - Extend 5 fingers to make a bear paw

Houston - Extend Index/Middle/Pinky, closed ring

Rice - Make a shadow puppet bird

SMU - Extend Index, Middle (Peace sign) with a slight bend to denote pony ears

TCU - half Bend Index, Middle, and thumb, closed ring pinky

UNT - see TCU (but look like Eagle claw)

UTEP - Extend Pinky and Thumb, close middle/ring/index (make a pick axe)

UTSA - Similar to UTEP (make a bird, pinky is bird tail)

Texas State - Extend Index/Middle Finger and Thumb and tuck Ring/Pinky. (making shape of Texas) Think Texas Tech with two fingers instead of one

Other D1-
Sam Houston State: Like Baylor's paws (making bearcat's claw)
Stephen F Austin: Like Texas State's (Index and thumb make a J for 'Jacks).
UT Arlington: Use same fingers as UTEP/UTSA but extend them forward like UT Austin (making a Short horn)
TAMU-Corpus: The Islanders do UTEP/UTSA, Hang loose
Abilene Christian: extend/spread pinky, ring, middle to make 'W' and Curl index and thumb to make a 'C'. Wildcats (like old A&M Wrecking Crew)
Lamar: Texas Tech's guns up with but it makes an 'L'

D2/D3:
Tarleton State: Like Texas State, but represents a gun like Texas Tech
West Texas A&M: Like UT Arlington
Angelo State: Like UTEP with bends in pinky and thumb making Rams head
Mary Hardin Baylor: Make a 'C' with your head for Crusaders
St. Mary's: Like TCU for Rattler fangs

I was waiting for number one to appear. I'm glad it wasn't a ucf fan because of the pissing match that would ensue.

1. True.. Wake Forest is actually named after Wake County (where Raleigh, NC) is located.

4. Iowa City (Iowa) and Ames (Iowa State) -- seriously, how can anyone screw up that bit o' trivia...?

7. Incorrect. According to many Target ECU fans and some distinguished alums, East Carolina is a state all its own (the 51st State -- or 52nd if you count Puerto Rico)

At the time of the dissolution of the SWC, Baylor and TCU was the 3rd most played rivalry after MN/WI and KU/MU. Both schools were together in Waco for a number of years.

I find it interesting that if Wake Forest had not moved to Winston-Salem, all four NC ACC members would be within about a 40 mile radius.
