Forgot to mention there is new Rally House store coming. they are based out of KC and
this is only one of few locations in the nation outside that area. They have Bearcat clothes etc. They also show Reds and Bengals in their add online about the new location

Thanks for the pictures! I had not taken the time recently to see what had become of that grass field lol...looks awesome. I still will miss Goetta at In The Wood, the UDF across the street and some of the other places that are no more. Are they planning on doing anything on the other side of McMillan...getting rid of stop and rob block now that Christy's is closing?

I miss Inn the Wood - good and inexpensive breakfast food. I used to head to UDF over Stop and Rob back in the day. Overall, I like the new development. The architecture might not be a perfect fit for the surrounding neighborhood, however its much more appealing than the run down fast food restaurants and vast amount of parking lots.

On a side note - extremely sad to see Christy's/Lenhardts go.

I believe I saw a Facebook post from President Ono that the next block south of U-Square is getting some sort of development (I think he said the "other half of the loop" which I interpreted to mean the next block south of U-Square).

Yes, there will be a huge student housing development not announced formally yet, but built where Christy's/Lenhart's is and I believe going al the way to the corner
where the grocery is now the lower portion of Clifton before it drops down the hill which is across from where the former Arby's has been for the last several years.

He might be referring to the eastern portion - across from St. George - that is still a vacant lot.

Not sure if this is still being planned?

Block 1 is a future development site that is currently being envisioned as a mixed-use building composed primarily of office and retail on top of structured parking. This project is being pursued as a joint venture between CHCURC, Towne Properties and Al Neyer, Inc.

I walked by there today and it looks really nice. We tried to go in but it must not be opened yet. Looks like it's ready to go. Had Reds/Bengals/UC apparel in the window. Should be a good addition to the development. U Square is awesome BTW.

The biggest benefit of this development is that it provides a bunch of options to the university community for both retail and housing in a safe environment. I wonder if UC has done any surveys on qualified students who didn't apply or didn't accept because they thought the neighborhood was unsafe. I've heard this negative perception so many times that I think the numbers who didn't go to UC because of safety issues would be eye-opening.

It certainly makes a huge difference aesthetically when you drive up to campus. Especially vs. what was there previously. For a kid/family from the suburbs, seeing urban decay right across the street from campus really influences your perception of the university and the area it sits in.

I am sure the new construction will go a long way to attract students and influence parents, especially from the burbs.

I live in West Chester and have heard opinions on how Clifton is riddled with crime. Some have made Clifton out to be the second coming of Beirut. Of course, these individuals have not been to campus for about 25 years or never even set foot there.

I have noticed this since moving back (it existed when I lived here before, just forgot how bad it was). Honestly, in Columbus there is not much of a negative perception about UC's campus regarding crime as there is here locally. For reference, the neighborhood were Ohio State sits is not a lot different than UC. Going east of High Street at night is pretty intimidating for someone from the suburbs. People who live in Greater Cincinnati who bash UC (the city as a whole for that matter) non-stop don't realize they do not do their community at large any favors on a larger scale. Outsiders tend to sometimes believe what they are hearing from within.

RE: U Square
Clifton is just like any other neighborhood in a downtown area -- you've got to be at least somewhat vigilant about what you're doing and where you're going. Most people with negative opinions about Clifton probably have negative opinions about urban settings in general.

And, FWIW, Clifton has had some blips on the criminal radar in recent months. The administration is being extremely pro-active in combatting the issue, though. The current regime "gets it" when it comes to PR and making sure that negativity about the surrounding doesn't become pervasive.

I had some pizza and a brew at Adriatico’s last night. The transformation is quite amazing. This truly is an entertainment district now and hopefully will draw some people from the burbs even on nights were there are no sporting events on campus.
