...man, we're just excited to play a conference mate in the same time zone. LOL!

Seriously though, I haven't seen any LaTech "we're your rivals ___it!" and I'm sorry if you've interpreted any of my comments screaming such a desperate sounding plea for whatever relationship we have had, or are restarting.

What I have seen...almost to a person, is that we Tech fans respect USM (in spite of a few of folks that claim to be Golden Eagle fans).

Please don't get your Eagle feathers ruffled when you read that we see ourselves as being similar to USM. I'm not going to get so granular as talk about series records in the 67-74 time frame and all that...this is where we see ourselves as similar to Southern:

1. Culture - We talk with the same accent, eat the same foods, follow the same pro teams, etc. We are you, you are us. We's practically kinfolk. No, I would never claim kin to Eager Eagle, but you get my point. :)

2. Proximity - I don't know why we ever stopped playing back in 1992, but I'm glad we are back on the calendar.

3. Politics - We deal with much of the same crap y'all do. It is a compliment to USM that we recognize and appreciate what you guys have accomplished in an SEC-dominated state with ridiculously limited resources. You have shown that with good leadership, and dang it, that FIRE in the gut...a lot of things can be overcome.

The University of Southern Mississippi has NEVER let their circumstances dictate their expectations. A bump in the road here and there, sure. Overall...Southern Miss figures out how to move the roadblocks. Y'all have DONE IT.

Please forgive us LaTech fans for respecting that, and hoping our new association with you will help us push our own Administration to adopt some of the same mentality that makes USM great.

this post 04-cheers

Don't want to lose to 'em of course, but how can you not like LaTech? They're good folks like USM folks, trying to get by like the rest of us.

Southern Miss is allowed to divert only about $1mil from their state appropriated funds to help offset their annual athletic budget expenses whereas Louisiana Tech diverted over $9mil from taxpayer funds to cover over half of their annual budget during financial year ending June 2012. Now, if all these tear jerking Tech supporters want to get in bed with a school whose fans let the taxpayers cover most expenses then have at it. USM teams will be showing up with an old worn out ball in a rusty school bus whereas Tech will park their shiny new taxpayer purchased bus right under our stadium.

See, this is where you guys are just proving you don't give a damn about college football... "We don't care, we just don't want to play them".

Oh hells bells, go join the P5 fan club... Where they're "too f'ing important to be seen hobnobbing with the rest of us".

Cause that's exactly what some of you sound like..

I am in the P5 fan club. I've been waiting for USM to get here for 25 years.

Probably trying to stoke a rivalry a bit, but he's in a better football school/situation so he's probably not bitter at all.

There was a time when it was OK to think big at USM. It wasn't all that long ago.

Hello my old friend. Was asking my new contacts at USM if they knew who you where. Of course none did, but they have only been there since the spring.

Sounds like from that post you are jealous of the Louisiana laws that govern these things.

Hope you had a good summer and the offer for us to meet anytime and anywhere for a beer and debate still stands.

The sad thing about this thread is that it has brought out the crazies. Any thread that has Andre Where and Eager Eagle in it has officially jumped the shark. I have a huge amount of respect for the USM eagles and hope to play them every year for a very long time. I know a ton of fantastic USM fans who respect us and the football we play in Ruston. The loons need to just stay home and quit trolling what was a good thread.

yes, yes, and yes.

but it was never a "good" thread. it was going to be a problem from the get go. after suffering through an entire season of pappy buttermilk and daddy-ball, there is no way that the clumsy implication that our groovy new coach is somehow disgruntled and "bitter" (his word) at being passed over by la tech was NOT going to draw flies. and the OP sorta tosses this grenade at us a lot.

so, the moral of this story is that there is more than one butt with a weed imbedded in it. jus' sayin'

Hey, thanks. Incidentally, I don't hate Tech with anything resembling the white-hot rage that EE has. I do agree with a lot of the stuff he says about college sports in general.

It don't need to be stirred. You can look at both the great coaches we hired and foresee that the"Rivalry in Dixie" is back!! I've wanted Tod Monken as Techs head coach since Bicknell left town. I hate that USM got him because I consider them and Rice as the biggest rivals we will have in CUSA. I'm also fired up about Skip Holtz. Both programs are about to hit their strides. Do I think Todd is bitter? I don't care.

I hear ya. and, look, we feel the same way. we are dying to see the real golden eagles take the field. the uncomfortable truth of the matter is that we don't know. nobody knows. it could be that 0-12 was all pappy. it could be that pappy has put us in a hole that will take a decade to get out of. it could be that we just sucked in the natural order of things, and will continue to suck for a few years.

this is one of those things that only strapping on pads will answer.

BS! You recruit the same players we do. You are 2 Deep with good talent. You had a $hitty coach for 1 year. Monken is going to have those guys eating nails and wanting to tear people's heads off. Bring it!!!!

I can't stand when some USM fans claim this is the "start of the demise" of USM football and we'll never be a real football school again or whatever. USM has only had back-to-back losing seasons twice (2) in school history, and I don't believe it's happened since like 1932. So for some USM fans to think we're a decade behind or whatever because we had one bad season where the players quit on the coaching staff and vice versa is just ignorant. I think the players are determined to show everybody what they're really capable of and I believe Monken knows enough on the offensive side to keep us in most games. Bringing back Duggan might be the best coaching decision of Monken's tenure at USM. Hopefully.

RE: Is Todd Monken bitter?
0-12 is a bump in the road. The "demise" will start if we accept being left out of the top tier. USM football was never about going undefeated... it was about playing with the big boys, whatever that meant. USM's goal needs to be to move BACK up. A lot of the posters here try to shout down any attempt to talk about that. The situation is a little better on Eagle Post.net, but even there you've got that Ace Barker clown drooling over some mid-major national championship tournament he thinks will happen. Ultimately, I think a lot of these people are shills, even athletic department employees trying to make things easier for themselves and their bosses. I'm fairly certain Ace Barker (who no doubt posts here under at least one name) is a plant.
