David Cutcliffe of Duke is a Bama grad, but didn't play football. He's not mean, but some believe Bear Bryant could come down on a player or two.

Yeah, I always thought Woody Hayes was certifiable. Kind of hated to see Ohio State axe him though after they realized he was kind of nuts. Always like to have him around to root against. Fine line between real concern for the game and that point. Think OSU finally got the feeling he was a liability and could get them sued.

I couldn't handle four a days in South Florida at that time of year, used to live there.
We were discussing college coaches, but those are some really nasty mean coaches.
Always thought Notre Dame's Knute Rockne might have been a really mean & demanding coach if he hadn't coached at Notre Dame. Heard a few times his speech, wasn't accurate: Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are going wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, tell them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper.

Well the last three are college coaches. But point is football was just tougher back then. There was just more expected.

I used to think it was tougher, but believe it was just mainly much more cruel than tough because the biggest thing coaches thought about was pushing football players to and or past their limits to see who might quit on them. They had very few restrictions, and if someone died, well it just happens.
Today there are a lot more restrictions, but players work on what they need to a lot more. Doesn't mean that it's not plenty tough.
Plenty tough doesnt mean its as tough. Steven Jackson even mentioned that to explain his age and number of career attempts in the NFL. Basically said that being 30 isnt a big deal because its not the kind of league it was in the 60's, 70's and 80's...

The only real thought that comes to mind, remember I am older, is a girl I dated once that had dated one of the Cincinnati Bengals. Sounded like they really had it made years ago in camp. Plenty of sweating but not so hard. Always figured college was a reflection of the NFL even back then. A lot of the old NFL players talk about how little training they actually did. Didn't impress me much.

I will nominate our former USL Coach Russ Faulkinberry---Our center needed to take a leak and he was told to pee in his pants which he did--and yes the QB and other ball carriers had to finish practice this way---after hitting a player and cutting his hand he had his hand resting on my shoulder with the blood coming down my back---Yes we won --even beat the Duck Dude and Bradshaw!!
Who is the Duke Dude and Bradshaw? Is that Terry Bradshaw?

Did that once, walk on hot coals, at one of those come together corporate encounter weeks. Never again.

Wow. You are right. He was one mean spirited coach. He would never get away with hardly any of those things today. Got sued for punching a punter in the mouth that made a bad punt against the Washington Huskies.

"During his time at Arizona State, Kush was known for being one of the most physically demanding coaches in the game. His daily football practices in the heat of the Arizona desert are still the stuff of legend today. One of his drills was known as "Bull in the Ring", whereupon he would have the players form a circle. He would put a player in the middle (most often, a player he felt needed "motivation"), call out a uniform number, and blow his whistle. That player would charge the player in the middle and the two would engage in contact until Kush blew the whistle again. Whichever of the two players gave the best effort would go back to the circle, while the player "dogging it" would stay in until Kush decided he could quit. Former NFL and Arizona State player Curley Culp once broke a teammate's facemask during this drill.

Another of his drills (which was designed to see if his running backs could take punishment carrying the ball) consisted of having only a center, quarterback, and two running backs line up on offense, with no other offensive lineman, and run running plays against the entire defense. Kush would run a running back into the line time and time again so he could get used to the pounding he would take in games.

The most famous of Kush's motivational techniques was called "Mount Kush." Mount Kush was a steep hill near the Sun Devils' practice facility (Camp Tontozona) near Payson, Arizona with several large rocks, cacti, and no shade from the Arizona sun. If a player especially needed discipline in Kush's opinion, that player would have to run up and down that hill numerous times."

Bear Bryant and Woody Hayes for certain. Always heard Paterno was kind of a ******* (aside from all the other stuff we just learned about).
The coaches we all think of are the ones who didn't change with the times, treating football as military type training.
Modern day Saban and Spurrier are definitely not the easiest to deal with. Ed Orgeron is a bit of a ******* even though he's not a head coach anymore. He's someone that may never get another shot. Will Muschamp is in this group too. His little sideline tantrums look like a fourth grader that just messed his pants on the playground.

Also, Kush may have cost the (at the time) Baltimore Colts a real chance with John Elway.

Kush sure pushed the envelope.
Almost sounds like he wasn't human.
Really good records with many of these members of
the meanest coaches though.

I idolized Bear Bryant growing up.
Read a couple of books on him and saw that made for TV movie @ ten years ago
about his camp at Texas A&M. Decided I didn't want to read any more about him
but just remember him like I had thought of him.

Times have changed alot. Nowadays no coach would get away with any of the Kush or Bear Bryant tactics.

Wondering if anyone remembered him. Totally agree. These guys today are little kittens compared to Kush. Players were actually scared to lose because they knew what would happen to them the next week in practice. Hard to believe the guy could get anyone to play for him.

Kush had some down years. Recruits like to play for a winner though. Winning just over 3 of every 4 games is pretty good. Without internet back then may have not been confirmed the way it would be today. Imagine some parents found what their sons told them hard to believe.
Here is his Arizona State record:

I have a buddy who was a PT at OSU under Hayes in the 70's. I have heard some unreal stories about the guy.

Basically, he was very engaging with everyone and had a big heart where his players and their families were concerned, but on the practice field and game day, he was in fact certifiable.

I don't think Mike Leach is the meanest, but he is certainly irreverent and crass.
