Why IN HELL WON'T SOMEONE TELL NIKE................
.......that they are using a shade of blue which is too damned light? While in a mall store yesterday which sells college caps, shirts, etc., I pointed out to the store manager how far off the mark the color of their Nike shirts and caps were. When she gave me the "it's the fabric" excuse, I showed her other Memphis (and Kentucky) merchandise of similar fabric by another, lesser-known company that was MUCH closer to dark blue, PMS 280. It appears obvious that nobody at UofM has ever asked Nike to use a darker (more correct) shade of blue for UofM.

What is the value of a brand standard which is not followed? It seems that someone in the athletic department thinks their personal preferences override the university standard.

It does absolutely no good to rant here. No one here can do anything about it.

When enough of us speak up to those in charge something WILL be done about it. I will continue to "rant" as long as I live unless this is corrected. NO school has more beautiful and appropriate colors than those professionally chosen and specified in our brand standard http://www.memphis.edu/logo/brandcolors.php . I will NOT stand by in apathy while my alma mater continues to squander such a valuable asset. Such "details" help build pride. Conversely, inattention to them, is a sure sign of LACK of pride. The Roman army understood this over 2,500 years ago.

As for "ranting here", countless letters, faxes, phone calls and e-mails to coaches, AD's and others over a period of decades have failed to solve the problem. They DID help bring about the brand standard, but one or more responsible officials in the athletic department choose to ignore it. I have come very close to going all-out, no-holds-barred public with this several times, but have refrained so far. I don't like negative publicity for the unversity and I am not the sort who wants anyone fired. I do, however have a limit and nasty temper. We shall see.

It's not apathy. How many times does someone have to explain the problems with controlling brand identity at this level. There are just too many sources. It's not like we're Coca-Cola. It can't be done.

I would be willing to bet that if you sit down with 60 Minutes and any number of other "news" outlets....Get it out on the internet....Make sure TMZ knows.....Do all of that....Express your true feelings....Let them know how angry you are...

I'm guess that if you do ALL of that....Nothing will change. Nobody is going to get fired. I promise. I also am pretty sure that the color is not going to get changed either.

The only thing that WILL make changes is if people quit buying "non-brand standard" merchandise.

RE: Why IN HELL WON'T SOMEONE TELL NIKE................
Miss J said it a long time ago. It's virtually impossible to control color especially in the textile industry. The shade of white is different depending on where the cotton came from. If the white substrate (cotton material in this case) you print on varies, the same can of colored ink on those different shirts will vary.

Color on a screen press can also vary depending on the mesh count of the screen itself (305 vs 230 vs 150). A sharpened squeegee vs a dull squeegee etc. Peel rate etc. etc. etc.

The best you can hope for is to get manufacturers to fall within a range because there will be a range.

Call the University and tell them that you are going to donate $2,600,000 per year to compensate for the fee Nike pays the University each year and then they will listen to you ... Until then you are a complaining one note who works to undermine the University Administration and its gear.

What Ned said. Were we paying Nike the situation would be different. The fact is, we NEED that money. We cannot dictate a damned thing to Nike. At least they aren't giving us uniforms like Notre Dame and Maryland have endured recently. The shoe companies have the power here, GA. They even do this to schools like ND and Bama.....who are far more powerful and influential than Memphis. In the grand scheme of what's important for Memphis athletics right now, proper shades of blue on merchandise is about #789...

Too much wolf-crying lessens the impact.

As does equating not whining constantly as some sort of lack of pride.

RE: Why IN HELL WON'T SOMEONE TELL NIKE................
As others have said, the main issue, beyond the problem with cloth dye matching, different manufacturers, etc., is that Nike is PAYING us to use our logo and colors to sell merchandise. A smart merchandiser is not going to stick strictly to the school colors, and our admin is not going to do it, either.

As I've posted before, I understand your argument about brand standards, but the need to merchandise many colors and styles overwhelms that position. Just the way it is. Helps sales.

I was just looking online for a U of M golf cap. I found hundreds, in many shades of blue, a few shades of gray, and other colors such as white, pink, black, camo, etc.

I'm a big Atlanta Braves fan, too. Their official colors are a deep red and a deep blue. But over the years, they have worn uniforms, and sold merchandise, of almost every color under the rainbow, including pink, camo, etc. It's good merchandising, and overtakes any concerns about brand standards.

RE: Why IN HELL WON'T SOMEONE TELL NIKE................
I wish the colors were uniform, but at least it is BLUE. My first 3 years in the band, our trim was RED and we wore red blazers for basketball games. That got real confusing when we played L'ville. Fans didn't know whether to boo us or not. I have the bass drum head that I played and the lettering is red with that dopey red and black tiger.

Later we got the unis with the blue coats and white pants, but still had red trim. We also got blue blazers for b'ball in '72-'73 year. Finals of NCAA. Screw Bill Walton.
