Nothing against Tulane, or anyone else who left, but the defections to the Big East proved that conference realignment had nothing to do with on the field successes, like wins and losses.
Here are the teams that left C-USA since its inception, ranked by their all-time W/L percentage, per CFBDataWarehouse:
#105 Tulane
#101 Memphis
#97 SMU
#82 Cincinnati
#76 Louisville
#74 ECU
#72 UCF
#68 Houston
#67 TCU
#50 Tulsa
#42 Army
#33 USF
And guess who's above all of them?
#32 Southern Miss

RE: Question for S. Miss Fans
I think a few things:
1. Excitement over the new hire. How many fans have realistic expectations after they hire a guy that they are excited to get?
2. The fact that this isn't Ellis Johnson: See rest of thread
3. Overestimation of talent on the team: Fedora left us in bad shape and Ellis Johnson damn sure didn't help.
4. Underestimation of what it will take to build back: Hell...physically, these kids have to be rebuilt from the terrible S&C program last year. Then, there's their morale.
5. How bad C-USA is: Honestly, I think most of our fans (including myself) are of the belief that this is a conference we should dominate when we get back to normal.
#5 may be the strongest reason, to me. Realistically, I probably should expect 3-4 wins. I'm going in thinking six.

RE: Question for S. Miss Fans
Perception is reality. Mississippi in general has a bad rep & USM will be percieved in a bad light when it comes to expansion because of this.
The only way is for us to have boise like wins & consistancy.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Some of the teams on that list above are very late bloomers, and some have never bloomed at all.
USM football has always been a high quality product. As far as I'm concerned, very little has changed in that regard.

1) He isn't Ellis Johnson
2) He's a no BS guy
3) He runs a competent offense similar to Fedora's but not the same (who is also already having success at UNC after leading USM to a 12 win season) after whatever that 2012 "offensive scheme" was.
4) Hard-nosed defense was our identity....it's kind of changed as CFB has changed. Though we hired the architect of our very good 2011 championship defense in Dave Duggan. The D should be much improved this season, as they were absolutely awful and pathetic last season.
5) 2013 CUSA isn't exactly all-world at football so we think we at least have a chance.
"#1" is the best reason of them all!

What makes you all feel so good about him? You all have made your bones on being hard nosed and playing really tough, physical defense. I am not sold on any coach from the Oklahoma State coaching tree. Especailly when it comes to the defensive side of the ball. I mean look at WVU. Other than his three year stint at LSU as a WR coach I don't really see a stop in his career that was on a team that fits your all's identity.
Once again no smack. I could be way off base here. I am wanting to see S.Miss back to form as much as you all are. In order for this new rendition of CUSA to be vialble we NEED S.Miss to be S.Miss. Are you all going to be more toward the Oklahoma State/WVU mold?
Oklahoma State is like any other college football program, it is going to produce some quality coaches that will be successful and the better ones will have a higher number of quality coaching candidates. Also remember Larry Fedora came to USM from Okla. State and did a good job for USM and also Jeff Bower, although he had strong ties at USM more than OSU, also came directly from OSU. Monken has a good track record, his philosophy is close to where USM wants to be and had gotten to under Fedora, which is more in keeping with the way the game is today versus where USM was under Bobby Collins, Bower and the ones in that time frame.
How Ellis Johnson was hired is a mystery that I questioned at the time and felt that Monken would have been a better choice since his philosophy is more adapted to where USM had evolved under Fedora so the talent would have more suited to Monken than Johnson.
Having gone through the Sports Admin. and Coaching Dept. at USM I am aware of the need for a philosophy to be primary in the coaching selection and USM had committed to a high octane offense after the Bower strong defensive team philosophy so it was surprising we would go back to a coach who was more defensive minded and frankly it failed miserably. Monken should have plenty of talent to work with on his offense and the key will be how fast and capable the defense will be as well as how the fitness training proves out.
I feel good about the choice and expect a fast return to the USM football we have gotten use to under Fedora, and the winning tradition that USM has had since 1935.

I think it was both.
EJ couldn't coach for ****....no doubt about that. I still maintain that the main cause of this team being so bad was him putting together an incompetent staff that, had we had leadership set, no AD would have allowed. I don't think a team goes 0-12 in C-USA solely because of bad coaching, though.
If Fedora coached that team, I think we go 5-7.
I hope I'm wrong, and I'll be happy to eat my words if these guys show me I was wrong. I didn't see much talent, though. At the very least, the returning talent spoken of is hypothetical and not proven.

LOL.
We could have easily won 5 games last year with EJ and Co. on staff had the seniors cared enough to win.
Watch the UCF game again if you believe otherwise. One of the 2-3 games the players actually gave a damn about.

Johnson was hired to appease the disgruntled big donors that were ticked off by Bowers dismissal. They cried about the Fedora hire saying he would run for the money as soon as it was offered. Well no shat. Any sane, level headed INFORMED fan knew that given our limitations.
The only good thing about the Johnson hire is those supporters won't have a dimes worth of say in future hires.

This. We were beating ECu until ELoss decided to pull the QB that had gotten us to that point and put Alford in. Last year's schedule was far from brutal. If Bower had been our coach last year he'd have gotten at least 7 wins just by running the ball with OL and RBs we had. Now this year's schedule? Ugh.

Personally, I think last year's team with Fedora and co. coaching would have won at least 9 games.

+1.
Nebraska and Boise would have been tough games for anyone. Louisville would have still been a toss up.
And I don't think some people realize how much the players loved playing for Fedora. Those guys would run into a burning building if that man told them too.

Coaching does not make that much of a difference. When we played you last year it looked like you had less talent than n many years. I am guessing that Fedora's last year at USM had many seniors on the team vs last years team. That makes a huge difference.

I agree, I think 9 games is a reach to put it politely. We were still coming off a season losing a four-year starting quarterback. Alford came here because EJ hired his high school coach, so either Favor, Campbell or Lloyd would have been the starter. Not sure any of them would have gotten nine wins against last year's schedule, regardless of Fedora being there.

Anyone who saw the play-calling, schemes, and personnel packages used at Southern Miss last year would almost certainly beg to differ.

A 13 year old playing NCAA 13 could've done a better job at play calling that EJ and Crew.
