I personally have a soft spot for a local team of mine: the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics, which is (from Wikipedia) "a mixture of chemical compounds or elements that has a single chemical composition that solidifies at a lower temperature than any other composition made up of the same ingredients."

Worst is the generic names like Tigers or Bulldogs.

My wife is a UCSC Banana Slugs alum. She was the student trainer for most of their sports when she went there. Shittiest facilities I've ever seen. Their bball gym held less than half than my old high school gym.

Agree, the hippie Banana Slugs at Santa Cruz have to be the worst. SLU Billikens comes to mind as well.

Austin Peay State (Tennessee) likes to abbreviate their name to Peay or just P. Students will chant "Let's go P!" during games. A few years back they had a star BB player they called the "Fly." You guessed it. The chant became, "Let's go P, the Fly is open!"

Some names are very over played in college sports (bulldogs, wild cats, tigers) especially when regional flavor is so much a part of college sports.

For example, instead of the Auburn Tigers, they could have gone with the Auburn Yellowhammers, a name closely linked with their state

Or instead of wildcats, K-state could have called themselves the Pronghorns

I know there are some cases where a name like "Tigers" is technically a tribute to a military unit (LSU &Missouri) but it still comes off as lazy and unimaginative to most people.
