or we shut down the program because that means an additional two million in debt every year and in the public eyes we all just became FCS and our attendance drops to 2000 per game.

Speaking of goat blowing, I suspect about 50 thousand gump fans would stand in line to blow the goat for Saban.

They really have not thought this through...
So they want to become a professional sports franchise and pay their players. Congrats you now pay taxes and just lost 35% of your revenue. Michigan and Ohio State are not going to play you at your place without a home game in return, so now instead of having 8 home games a year, you have 6, costing you millions in revenue. The obscene amount of TV money that is driving all of this madness is going to dry up once the illegal bundling model that we are currently forced to pay to have cable television goes away, and now you are going to mess with your ticket revenue as well.
This isnt just football. You break away and do this, march madness goes away as well. You think that the US Congress is going to let you take a steaming dump on 80% of the universities in america, including many of their Alma maters while destroying March Madness and major college football? Orin Hatch called hearings when you took a dump on one team... now you want to take a dump on hundreds... Good luck with that.
Players, you want to give up amateur status to collect a paycheck while you play? Congrats, you now are an employee and owe taxes on the payments you receive and the cash value of the benefits you already receive... Aka the scholarship, the money for lodging, the cost of your trainer, the cost of the meals provided to you, etc. Most states that have pro teams also have laws taxing visiting professional players. So not only do you have federal taxes to worry about, you now have to pay state taxes in your home state, plus 1/12 of state taxes in each state you play in during a road game.

Yep, but it sounded real pretty to all the gump lovers when Saban mentioned it though.
Rho Tide.

The real Hindenburg would be the leagues deciding to do this.
They are the ones journeying into the unknown.
The other leagues are on the ground.

Agree with Memphis Blazer on this one. Let them go. At worst create a division based upon athletic department budgets. It would end the farce and give the non-AQ their own championship to go after. The schools where there isn't (another) pro franchise will love it since they would have nothing to split fan royalty.

So make more divisions. Add a semi-pro division above D-1. They could call it the Football Bowl and Championship in Tandem Division, or FBCTD.

One factor no one has mentioned (or I missed it) is that the present 12 game season is not "set in stone" any more than the old 10 or 11 game schedule was. I think what the "Biggies" are setting the stage for is a season expansion to 13, 14 or even 15 games in order to keep their lucrative cupcake OOC schedules intact. 9 conference games (4-5 or 5-4 annual home games) added to 5 or 6 OOC games -- nearly always played at home -- will continue to "feed the bulldog" just as the present system does. Bama paid Kent State $1.2 million so we know the money is there.

RE: Saban's '5 conferences' trial balloon would be the Hindenburg...
Mike Slive's comment about "those who can afford to pay the stipend should not be limited by those who can't". Perhaps one answer would be that the NCAA set the level of compensation for when a "rich program" plays a "peasant program" at such a level that the peasant programs would get real funding from the game. I'm talking millions, not middle 6 figure pittances. If these Royal Brahmins want to be separate, let them be COMPLETELY separate so they can only play other royal teams, unless they will pay $2 or $3 million to a peasant school AND require that they agree to nonrevokable home & home contracts.
I have suggested before that the tremendous income differential between the BCS members (which won't disappear just because the name changes after 2013) should be reflected by a difference in such things as transfer rules where transfers should only be required to "sit out" when moving to a like level school. If they move to a nonBCS school, they should be able to play immediately if they meet academic requirements.

I wonder if Slive would feel the same way if he were still working for Conference USA.
