Question for NCAA Rules Specialists - Merging D1 school into D2 school
I wonder, what may happen, if a division 1 school is merged into a division 2 school. Can the division 2 school gain automaticly D1 status?
For example: Florida AM is formally merged into the university of West Florida.
Instead of two athletic department, there would be only one left
PS: I don not want to start a discussion, if merging HBCUs into other institution make sense or not.

LIU-Post (D-II w/ fb) and LIU-Brooklyn are talking about it. What would happen is Merged LIU would be D-I and now have fb in the NEC. I don't know if the fb program would have to wait 2 years to be eligible for the playoffs like an upstart, if that's still a rule.
This has happened in D-II and NAIA and as long as the school keeps sports they stick to the current Div. the better one was in.
