I agree with you, LSUtah. We batted that around several days ago. I think this new playoff committee will have to come out with their detailed criteria for selection and show that a blind overall record will not be a major factor. A two loss SEC team playing that kind of schedule would have to feel confident that they would get a fair shake against an undefeated ACC team, for instance. If it trends that everyone wants to fill their schedule with quality opponents, why not fill it with conference foes? That 10 game format is about the only way 14 teams can actually be a beneficial number for football.

I think we are definitely heading there. But they will want 9 games to get more money. Then they'll wait and when a look in comes again it will be either expansion, or game #10 to get yet more money. I think that could be one reason we are stopped at 14 apiece right now for the Big 10, ACC, and SEC. There will be more pressure to pick up #15 & 16 in order to renegotiate contracts. If we or the Big 10 or ACC had jumped to 16 full time members we would be selling out one of our chances in the next few years to get a renegotiation. I don't think any of the conference commissioners are going to pass up any opportunity to get more money. The next boost for the SEC will be 9 conference games. At some point I look for Thursday night games on the SECN. Then I look for two more additions. Then I look for that 10th conference game. Then it will be time for the extra round of conference championship games. When everything is in place it will be a 13th regular season game. That's six more reasons to ask for more. I really think this is what slows the progression to our final destination.

There isn't enough initiative to go to 10 games without expanding the season to 13 games. Only two OOC games? With 10 conference games that means 5 conference home games. That means both of those OOC games have to be low grade programs in order to have 7 home games a year. Wave goodbye to decent OOC rivalries without 13 game seasons.
Having 16 programs in some of these major conferences would have helped but it really isn't necessary. Having the Big Ten, SEC and ACC all at 14 teams should be enough to leverage the lesser conferences that rely on big games against the programs in those conferences. Also with so many PAC programs dependent on the games against the California programs, I am sure they wouldn't mind a 13 game season that allows for a 10 game conference schedule.

He1nous, I'm sure even you would be opposed to 13 games in light of the mounting medical data and the fact that the player aren't receiving a dime from their efforts. I think those points will be the major hurdles to a longer season.

You are correct. However the camel will get its nose under the tent on this one when a pre-season game takes the place of the Spring game. It won't happy within the next few years, but there are more coaches and schools starting to talk about this so I give it a decade.

Thanks, but I'm still me. Did you see the total championships I posted on the Pride thread? Let's add an addendum for those won by A&M and Mizzou prior to conference entry.

Mizzou won one Indoor Track and Field Nat'l Championship back in 65. One also in Baseball but that doesn't count I guess now.

Why not? It counts for Mizzou, just not the SEC.

Baseball is no longer an Olympic sport. That's what I meant. We did win the indoor track championship which does count.

It's still an NCAA sport. That counts. If Bowling counts Baseball counts. USAFMedic, post those on the Conference Pride thread too along with any national titles that Missouri claims. It's worth noting.

I'm undecided on the 9 game schedule thing, but I agree with you about getting the Gators out of Florida more often. However, the Gators want to be "the Texas" of the southeast, and the more times they play in Florida, the closer they get to their goal.

What's worse is that the Gators scheduling philosophy is spreading. Its already gotten to UGA and UT.
