That's to be expected for a sold out opening night in an unfinished ball park. If they are still a nightmare after 10 home games I would be concerned

We're going to play as many as possible there starting next year. Our season starts six weeks before the Barons, so our schedule is set before theirs is released. There will be some scheduling conflicts later in the season to work around.

I think how well Regions Field was received last night and all the good press that is going on today does nothing but help the chances of a UAB stadium. If the Barons have a good season, and more development continues to be announced in the area, eventually the opposition will be overwhelmed.

What Finis will say is "Oh, good. All you private business owners can get behind the UAB stadium and pay for it yourself if you think it is financially beneficial."

President Watts is between a rock and a hard place with the budget sequestration and the stadium plans... there's no way he can push for a $60 million stadium when UAB could be losing $35 million in research funding... even though issuing bonds, collecting naming rights, and luxury suite donations is a completely different revenue stream from what could ever fund research.

Bingo, in fact I will go further and say that the Barons field endeavor has to be successful for the OCS to go forward.

But that's the thing, private businesses didn't pony up the cash for the baseball stadium. Regions Field is a perfect example of how public sector investment can pay off. Look at all the stuff announced for the area. Just yesterday there was a new announcement about an apartment complex. The city is even making back some of the money they put in through naming rights, cuts of the gate, etc.

Now, maybe UAB could get the city to throw in a little or get a really good naming deal or something. At some point it makes too much sense and the will of some of the politically well connected in Birmingham, and by that I mean even the white guys occupying corner offices in the Alabama Power, Regions, and Wells Fargo buildings will say enough is enough, build the stadium.

There needs to be a college night where a student ID gets you in for half off or something. Promo's like that, hotdog night, and Thirsty Thursday will bring people out and it makes the area and UAB look better for supporting the team.

What's the wow about? They've been silent through a lot of this stuff. The business community of Birmingham hasn't stepped up to the plate, up until now it's been UAB and the city going at this stuff alone. The CEOs that live in Mountain Brook but work in Birmingham need to be more vocal, just buying luxury boxes isn't enough. They need to be out championing the project(s) and using their influence with the board to change minds.

If it's a white guy, he must not have anything better to do than to support projects that are important to you. They certainly couldn't have earned that corner office by, oh, I don't know, being a good businessman, perhaps? I'm so glad we have you to check for acceptable skin tones in all the corner offices in the downtown high-rises and that we now know that there's not a single minority individual occupying any of them. You did check your facts, right? Of course you did.

Maybe you could have left it at "executives," "power brokers," or maybe even "pawn masters," or "thieving, UAB-hating bastages," etc. Instead, your primary impulse is to toss the race card onto the table, which doesn't surprise me at all.

Think he was talking about white people in Birmingham, not white people in Maryland. That's two distinctly different groups of white people.

Come on...you can't just lump all people of one color into the same group.

I'll ask, a good portion of them live in my apt community even though many went back south when the economy did.

I wouldn't hold my breath on the "whites" from the corner offices from the aforementioned businesses or from the Brookie's (I'm a former Brookie & one reason why I no longer live there). They're fans of & support other state teams so have no vested interest in UAB regardless of how shortsighted/small minded it is to do so.
