Has anyone heard anything legit about VCU being a possible addition?

I'm not a conference commissioner, but it appears to me what this new conference needs ASAP is a perception boost and some good publicity. For this reason I would be leaking the ideas of adding VCU non-stop while the Rams are being a chic Final 4 pic (Bilas, Dana O'Neil, Katz, etc)...actually try and capitalize on March Madness.

Right now the C7 is winning that battle, but if the public school side could add some good basketball programs I think they could start winning the perception battle.

Also, I'd highly recommend having the conference tournament at Barclays. Yes, it's not MSG...but it's also a much nicer facility, and you could go head-to-head with the new "Big East" and that place would be packed.

Trust me, if not for VCU and Temple fans at this weekend's A-10 tournament...that place would have looked like the MEAC tournament. The private school fans attendance was laughable, and I say that having the point of reference of coming from the CAA the previous year, which I'd say had much better attendance among even the northern schools coming down to Richmond.

Anyway, hope we're actually in the discussion, but the ones going on in the America 12 or Metro (hopefully Metro Conference) offices.

Nothing legitimate yet, sadly. I do think of all schools in the discussion for being added (all sports, oly's, everything) VCU would be the best addition especially with Navy now seemingly in the fold.

However if you look at the pace this group goes at we're all going to have to be patient. They have shown zero ability to multitask so likely we're looking at the finalization of the contracts, then work on the name, then more additions/ECU all-sports.

Hopefully in time you guys will be joining us (and sooner rather than later).

Lol...Lord, this is soooo incredibly true.

Frankly, if VCU does join I'd like to see one more quality basketball school (no dead weight) added to bring the total to 12. St. Louis comes to mind, but I'm sure there are others.

Well if there are going to be basketball invites they need to go ahead and do it before the C7. Invite VCU and St Louis to bring basketball to 12 members. That's 12 on the basketball side and 12 n the football side. Name the conference and call it a day. Finally.

RE: The Best Outcome
If the conference announced today the new name is ____, ECU will play all sports along with Tulane beginning in '14, VCU will be added to balance Navy's addition, and Tulsa will be the 12th conference member. Then in one day we will have blown our wad and have nothing positive to announce for a year. Seems a better strategy would be to have a positive announcement every 2-3 weeks leading up to the July 1, start with a new name.

St. Louis will be in the C7. Let them have the Private schools. The 12th basketball school will be ECU. If you want more than that I'd suggest GMU or WSU.

RE: The Best Outcome
The first positive announcement was a media contract which gives incoming members more money than ever and all members better national exposure than ever.

Yesterday was good news, but instead of celebrating we, on this board, pick and find one detail to ***** about and make it a divisive dick measuring contest.

*IF* St Louis isn't available and *IF* they're hell bent on going to 12 in basketball than we need to add a basketball that adds value to the other 11. And no, sorry, but that's NOT ECU's "basketball" program. Honestly through, I hope they keep it at 10 basketball and 12 football. I see no reason to change UNLESS TWO quality basketball programs get us to 12.

You're going to be disappointed. ECU will NOT be a partial member. I'd gladly sig bet with you if you don't believe it. It's been talked about in multiple media outlets, our AD, our president has guaranteed it. I know that upsets Memphis fans. Truthfully I'd rather not play your garbage football program either. Have a nice day. 04-cheers

I don't see them changing their minds.

Army might come if Navy joins. This conference needs two military academies with a national following and brand recognition. Consequently, I like the following conference line up:

(03-18-2013 04:43 PM)Attackcoog Wrote:  The more I think about it, the best outcome we can hope for at this time is something like this--

All Sports

UConn
Cinci
Temple
USF
UCF
Memphis
ECU
Tulane
Houston
SMU
No—S Miss/Tulsa (pick one, but keep in mind S Miss brings over 30K in attendance where Tulsa barely hits 20K).

Football Only

Navy
Army—added

Olympic Sports Only

VCU
UMass—No, but would add if FBS goes independent
Ideally, also 2 of St Louis, Dayton, and Charlotte.

You do know that UMass can play football in the MAC and all other sports in the unnamed conference? Popular to internet myth, there is no NCAA rule against doing that.

Hawaii does it...

this isn't about there being a rule...it's about what is in the best interest of the school and the league. If the league invites UMASS they are not leaving the football program behind.

Hawaii does not. Their Olympic sports do not reside in a conference that sponsors FBS football.

I'm not suggesting there is a rule against it. Just that Hawaii is not an example.

Let me be the first to say that if ECU is invited in basketball I'll certainly be disappointed. There are still too many much better options out there ---. But if you already have a super secret invite (that won't be made official for whatever reason) -- than fine, the whole subject is moot and what do you care? 03-wink

B/C I'm sick and tired of Memphis fans talking this BS. There's nothing super-secret about it. It's been mentioned about 100 times now but for some reason you guys can't get it through your skulls. We're a better basektball program than Houston, SMU and Tulane at the very least and I don't see anybody bitching about them.

First, nobody "is talking BS." Until ECU gets a basketball invite (which they haven't) everyone here is free to discuss all scenarios - both including or not including ECU on the basketball side or involving any number of other basketball teams -- and as often as anyone likes. Cool? But please, feel free to continue bitching about.

I agree completely with all of your thoughts on this, and was impressed by your fans at both the A-10 tourney and Atlantis lo those months ago. Your program has been revived and now is exactly the time to bring you into the fold, hopefully with Wichita State and a GMU/SLU type school to boot. Plus you'd give us yet another former Metro program, limited time notwithstanding.

That gives us an extremely noteworthy basketball league that would get tons of coverage on ESPN instead of looking at a few big matchups a year, gives us positive press at a time when the world is looking at college basketball, and gives us a really strong competitive foundation going into the future.

All at the expense of destroying the sanctity of an "all-sports" league that has a partial member already.

I can only assume you are talking about this year, which I can agree with you on, but traditionally through both programs histories, you are not even in the same conversation.
