Not to sound like a broken record, but a little quick read for those who think the "Texahoma 4" will be leaving any time soon:

ESPN: Big 12 extends rights deal, cementing future

The proper term is "Texoma". Seriously. I used to live in North TX along the Oklahoma border and the area is called Texoma.

By the way, the tone of the article did not make it seem that any expansion is imminent.

Strictly my opinion:

4x18 will be the model. 72 teams make the cut.

Conference championship games are the defacto round one of the playoffs.

Four team playoff with the winners after that.

The 18 team conferences will operate more like 2 nine team conferences with some crossover games and will be grouped regionally.

A supersized mini NFL model if so to speak.

Lots of scrambling to be one of the last few on the lifeboats.

Yep, this the most measured and well thought out responses I think I've seen to these questions. He's willing to talk about the what ifs but couch in terms that there is nothing that unequivocally says they have to add. But one thing he is telling us if you read between the lines is he'll listen to the networks to see how much more value adding x or y schools will add to the bottom line.

“Until we're persuaded that larger is better we feel pretty good about right where we are. If you get bigger do you have to get to 16? Can you get all the benefits at 14? 12? I just think there is a real shortage of empirical evidence to guide our decisions.”

Expansion will be among the issues discussed at the next conference meetings Jan. 28-29 in Dallas.

“I think a clear mandate comes from a clear set of data that says, ‘This is the right thing to do.' Bowlsby added. “I'm not sure that intuition is the best reason [for other schools to] leave.”

The University of Texas will never be a part of an 18-team conference . . . to much power lost.

Jim Delany has already tossed the 18 number around publicly.

9 team division within that conference will allow them to continue their power trip

18 is such a dumb number for a conference. Go 16 or 20 and do four divisions. 9 team divisions? That's just two conferences with a scheduling agreement.

If the B1G, SEC, et al want conference semifinals, the NCAA FBS rules will be changed. They wouldn't budge for the MWC/CUSA merger, but they'll hold open the door for the B1G/SEC without issue.

I think 18 teams is a good number. THREE divisions and a mini-conference tournament to break any ties in divisions. I still have the Texoma and Kansas schools in the Pac 12 some day. I don't think the Big 12 merges with the best of the ACC.

I have the mid Atlantic ACC schools in the B1G, with the SEC taking the fillers. Three 18 team conferences, 3 Final Four teams, one At-Large for the rest of FBS. If you can't win your conference, you aren't going to the playoff.

I think at the end of the B1G contract, Delany will offer to UNC, UVa, and others. Then the Va Techs and NC States will start flirting with Slive shortly thereafter. Scott will make another power play and land Texas once UT goes back into the crapper as they appear to be headed.

MWC and ACC will snag the left overs and duke it out for the final Final Four berth.

I've always felt that 18 team conferences are nothing but two nine team conferences waiting for a chance to split.

...puff, puff, pass...

OK, I've lived in Houston (Rice for grad school and worked for an engineering firm down there), and UT got far greater market penetration in Houston than UH did. Hell, you guys were almost always relegated to the 7th page of the Houston Chronicle behind 2.5 pages of Texas, 2.5 pages of TAMU, and a page of other Big 12 news.

2 of the states 3 ( Texas Tech & Texas) largest fan supported schools have been down relatively speaking while A&M had a monster year. Tech fixed their coaching problem with the Kingsbury hire and I imagine UT will do that in the future. A&M might be riding a wave right now but make no mistake, Houston is a Big 12 town. Always will be.

All the people that are saying UH will not make it into the Big 5 conference are going to be in for a shock. When this is all over UH will be in a PAC, ACC or Big 12.
