If the fans don't matter, who does? I would have thought that getting big, enthusiastic crowds at MM Roberts was priority #1.
I've said this many times : people in MS are far too football-savvy to pay $50 to watch a game against Texas State (or ODU, UNT, etc.)
If that were true there wouldn't be nearly as many Mississippians wearing OM and MSU crap. If they were really football-savvy then Southern Miss would own the state of MS.
I think those people would tell you that MSU and Ole Miss play at the highest level whereas USM doesn't. SEC-worship is very ingrained in southern culture. If we can't get into the SEC, we need to get close enough to at least make a case for ourselves.
I think most USM fans realize this, but they're resigned to the status quo. What we need to do is have a little more pride in ourselves.
It's not a question of pride. We can strut all we want, and boast till we're blue in the face. Step 1 is tons of $$$$$$$. And then things will grow from there.
Maybe "ambition" is a better word. You've got to have a vision of what you want, and to believe in it. The prevalent attitude seems to be "we'll be OK no matter what" and that does scare me a bit. Money is often just the manifestation of a vision tenaciously pursued.

It would be BE.
The admin is very vocal about wanting to stay with similar academic institutions. Staying with the Dallas, Houston, and southern Louisiana areas is also a big plus for both recruiting and alumni base.
We just have more in common regionally there than the mountains and west coast, too. It's the logical alignment for TU.

I think your president is full of crap.
Boise State is lower academically than any CUSA school.
Rice is better academically than any school in the Big East.
Your president wants to be in conference with SMU because he's a self-loathing social climber.

He also seems to be doing well in recruiting this year. Rice fans were ready to send him packing early this past season. Is he completely off the hot seat now ?
We are negotiating a contract extension with Bailiff, but we do not know much about the details. The contract extension means he probably is off the hot seat, but some nagging issues remain - like winning the big games against Tulsa and Houston. Expectations for 2013 are high, and the schedule keeps getting easier. If his team is a No Show in the Bayou Bucket again, and he loses a game like Memphis in 2012, the fans will probably be anxious and vocal.
What happens to Bailiff if he loses to UTSA in the dome next year? Just asking.

I had no idea you were so close to Dr. Upham! That's some good inside info...
Anywho... I'm pretty sure he just wants what's best for TU and is trying to make that happen.

I agree, but his comments were in poor taste, and inaccurate. You want to be in a good conference? Fine. There's no need to construct some stupid narrative about academics. Aubrey Lucas wouldn't do that.
There must be a lot of people wanting to get rid of Tulsa, as far as I know we have had no offers and we are in CUSA. Just because somebody said something.......all of sudden we have several threads acting like Tulsa is some where else.....who is going to replace us, the new CUSA......why don't we wait until something actually happens......I expect Tulsa to win CUSA next year and be ranked which will be good for CUSA. Don't act like we aren't a part of this conference!!!!!

I'd be glad to have UT stay in CUSA
Tulsa win what? ECU has 19 starters back and both kickers from a
7-1 conference team......tied ucf for eastern championship. Also we have the 6'8" receiver back who BEAT Tulsa the last time ECU played in football...........so Tulsa wins what???????????????????????????
