RE: Chris Crawford still contributes despite shooting funk
CC didn't get pulled because of the hot hand last night...

You know this because the man behind him (Wilson) on the depth chart came in and CC did not return. I have no problem with that...Wilson gives us something in the backcourt we really don't have and would be nice to have...Height.

Quote:Chris has played 32 games in which he has taken five 3's or more.

In 16 of those games, he shot 40% or better.

In 14 of those games he shot 25% or under.

In 2 games he has shot between 25% and 40%.

The problem is he hasn't taken enough threes in a game to be either "hot" or "cold." One shot here and there isn't enough for a player to get in a rythym.

Look at DJ. He was 4-5 to start the season and has gone 2-10 since the Minnesota game--likely because he is only taking one shot or so a game.

Or because he's regressing towards the mean.

As to Crawford, it looks like the same thing may be happening and that his numbers last year were an outlier. He's only slightly off his Freshman numbers. It just may be that this isn't a funk so much as just who Crawford is.

He was first off the bench last night. Is that the usual rotation? If he's down on himself and as a result not responding well to the adjustments in scheme, how DO you "fix" that, beyond his own internal adjustments, ie, mindset? I'm asking, because I don't have answers, either.

RE: Chris Crawford still contributes despite shooting funk
there's only 200 minutes to go around in a game, but crawford only plays the 1,2 or 3, so really only 120 minutes.

Joe needs 30 at least, Adonis needs 25-30, antonio barton 15-20, Geron 20+, DJ absorbs some minutes at the 3 as well as Damien . . . It's hard to justify giving CC a lot of the minutes going to those other players right now. He should probably be getting 15/game and then earning his way back up

I think it's mostly a matter of trust. Pastner doesn't trust CC's shot, judgment, and effort right now - not when he has better options in GJ and AB. And the fact that Wilson is getting any minutes at all should really be a wake-up call to Chris...

FWIW, I see the same player that he was as a freshman: a guy that's capable of good defense when he's into it, a guy that sees the floor well, but also a guy with a suspect jumper who takes bad shots. (The most egregious example being when Chris shot us out of that Arizona tournament game. We had the ball down 3 with 90 seconds left and he took a 30-ft 3 pointer with 30 seconds on the shot clock and missed, of course. We had to chase the game from that point on.)

Looks like Chris is getting the Joe Jackson/Stan Simpson treatment.

85 consecutive games of double digit minutes. Played 31 two games before. Played 5 last night.

Damn.

He's been playing poorly. He had a very nice assist last night, but then he took a three that looked terrible and that was all she wrote.

Hard to justify taking minutes away from Antonio or Joe and giving them to Chris when Antonio helps out so much on offense.

He also threw a lazy pass that was intercepted and watched as his teammates tried to stop the Rice player from scoring.

He threw the exact same kind of lazy pass to the wing a game or two ago with the same results.

This time, Josh immediately pulled the string on him.

Also, a couple of games ago Josh mentioned how hard and/or good Wilson had been practicing.

Something had to give.

Geron also fouls at an unbelievable clip. All the tenacity in the universe doesn't do him any good on the bench. It's terrible defense to foul a ball handler 45 ft from the basket. If Geron can tighten this up, there may be an argument.

Crawford is still consistently our best perimeter defender.

It seems like Geron has the officials looking at him especially hard. CC is not a good perimeter defender, not even close. He consistently allows players to take him off of the dribble and blow by him.

Again, it's funny how much his offensive slump has skewed perception on his defense. Johnson is scoring better, so people just tend to think he's playing better. Chris may have a lapse guarding the ball on the outside, but Geron was MUCH worse at keeping his man in front of him during the Rice game.

Harvard usually plays small so I look for him to play.

The Crimson hammered the Owls a few weeks ago. We play two halves against them like the first half we played at Rice on Wednesday night, our contest with the elitists could be more interesting than we'd like.
