Be glad you didn't get butch. He could recruit like no other this state has seen, but man he left that program covered in red tape. They are still finding stuff he did illegally in chapel hill.

Yeah, it looks like a pretty underwhelming hire.
Looking at his resume, I just don't see what makes him a good fit for FIU. He must be a damn good interviewer.

Our AD will only hire you if your last name is well known. Thus we bring you Turner. Pete has got to go.

RE: FIU Has A Head Coach
Its worse than a crappy hire. He has 9 years of HC experience with a record of 42-61.
San Jose State
1992 7-4
Illinois
1997 0-11
1998 3-8
1999 8-4
2000 5-6
2001 10-2
2002 5-7
2003 1-11
2004 3-8
I would be more than upset if I was an FIU fan. Esp if Danny Hope was really inerested in the job.

You'd have been better off with Watson Brown.

I'm not going to call it a bad hire. I'm very familiar with Turner as Fighting Illini head coach as well as former offensive cord for the Chicago Bears. He likes a dink and dunk offense where a QB will rely on short passes. It's a pretty basic offense that he usually relies on. He had a couple good years at U of I going to Sugar Bowl in 2001. Was Bears OC before and after that.
Like I said I wouldn't call it a bad hire but rather a solid hire that could show results.

MU ATO I know you grew up an Illni fan. But Turner is not a good hire or a solid hire. He won 35 games in 8 years. Thats an avg of 4.3 wins per season. Also 10 of those 35 game in one season. Take that season out and the total goes down to 3.5 games per season.

Not the 'sexy name' that was allegedly going to be sought out. But with so much time put in the NFL, Turner is bound to have picked up some fresh tricks to go along with his own offensive mantras. Of course, you've got to recruit good talent to run that stuff...
One can only call it a bad hire based upon his past head coaching record, a stint that saw its end two presidential terms ago. He's not a marquee hire, he's a wild card with some negatives.

True at Illinois in the Big 10. I'm giving him more credit in Sun Belt / CUSA at a Florida school that had a solid foundation to grow. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give it a 5. Give him a average QB and they will win. Give him a halfway decent QB and they will win more than your avg. coach could with the same QB.
I might be giving him too much credit but I just think it will work.

And if this hire would have been Watson Brown, what would you have said.....Both Brown and Turner had about the same sucess in the same amount of time.

turner has a .407 winning percentage which is better than brown at .391 watsons true gift is staying employed with an overall record of 120-190-1 he has the most losses of any coach with an overall losing record and ten away of surpassing amos alonzo stagg has having the most losses of any college football coach in history.

RE: FIU Has A Head Coach
I may be in the minority, but I don't think it's a bad hire at all. We're talking about FIU, not Notre Dame here.
First of all, it's a guy with head coaching experience, not only at the FBS level at SJSU, but in the Big Ten at Illinois. How many times have schools in FIU's shoes gone for a young up-and-coming assistant (or even worse, a veteran assistant) with no head coaching experience and seen it blow up in their face?
He took an Illinois teams that was in shambles and went 0-11, 3-8, 8-4 his first three years, then followed that up with a 5-6 season and a 10-2 year with all of his own players in year 5. Not being an Illinois follower, I don't know how or why the wheels fell off after that, but he proved he can build a competitive team in the Big Ten. He is 8 years wiser now, and that should help him.
FIU is in a great recruiting area, Cristobal had the program on it's feet, and I think Turner will do great there. YMMV.
