RE: Southern Miss and Marshall
I am sick over losing you guys. I am sick over getting stuck left behind. Hopefully it will only be temporary.
Examples of rivalries lost:
ECU-Marshall
ECU-Southern Miss
Marshall-UCF
Southern Miss-Tulane
Southern Miss-UCF
ECU-UCF
Anyone see a trend here?
It's sad to see this go away. IMO, Rivalries are what gets someone to watch the damn TV games. Who cares about Wazzu or UW on TV, but if they are playing the Apple Cup, you might watch. At least it's newsworthy. But now it's all gone to markets. Nobody really cares if people watch apparently, they just want you to be in the market to get the money. At some point that doesn't make sense though. it does for the B1G, but the BTN is a completely different beast than is trying to add media markets and hoping that helps your TV deal enough that Boise stays.
The SEC is built on regional rivalries, but has gotten so large in the past 50 years, they are considered a national conference, even though the are the most tight knit group out of all of the leagues out there.
To the Memphis fan that said "NO", I totally feel for you guys. You finally, finally get your chance at the conference you've been dreaming about for the past couple times you've been snubbed over. Now, the new league you just get into, is on the verge of loosing one of your main rivals in Louisville, and the basketball schools are about to bolt. So what do you do? You have this football program that you have to think about. What the hell do you do? Georgetown, Villanova, St Johns, the whole bunch you'd love to see in the FedEx Forum all season long are on their way out. You're welcome to come with, but ooooo, **** guys, sorry, we've got this problem of a tag along football program. We gotta go with these guys. ****.
AS a die-hard Herd supporter, I really want to be with you guys. You are our rivals. I want to be in a conference for a long, long time with Southern Miss, UCF, and especially ECU. And I'd do whatever it took to get there. I don't want to sell out our other sports, but what option did ECU have? None, really.
Like one of the other posters said, we had the invite from the original CUSA to come in as football only, and move all our other sports to the Horizon League. it was all worked out and then fell through. Had we gone, things could have been a lot different.
WVU and VT both started out as Big East football onlies, and had their other sports in the A-10 for years. No one seems to remember that.
I have wanted the Herd in the Big East for a long time. I just hope that we make it back with our conference brethren, and our rivalries where we belong. At least IMO.
