As I have stated elsewhere, I considered this sort of speculation silly...until now.
Consider this:
UConn is almost certainly gone, and Cincy is likely to follow.
That leaves only Temple and USF as remaining Big East football members, and potentially Navy.
Houston, UCF, Memphis and SMU are still committed, and now add Tulane and ECU. I think that the likelyhood of SDSU and Boise now going to the Big East is remote.
There are rumblings from UCF, SMU and Houston, but assuming they remain committed to the BE, that still leaves only an 8 or 9 team football conference.
That is certainly not sustainable in today's landscape.
Additionally, I suspect that the BE basketball schools break away, and take Temple with them. Temple football might stay, or could move to somewhere like the MAC.
So.
The BE MUST add at
least 2 football schools
right now, even if BSU and SDSU remain; which again I think is unlikely. 4 schools if they don't come.
(BYU is still an unknown, but has a great brand and a great market.)
I would not be surprised to see Holland push for ODU, UNCC, Marshall, and Delaware as regional adds.
ODU, UNCC and UD bring the markets. Marshall is in the 65th TV market, but at least it's top 100 and they have a brand.
(JMU and App are longshots because of TV market, but are more FBS ready than UD at this point.)
If UCF, Houston and SMU decide not to go to the BE; along with BSU and SDSU, then Big East football becomes unrecoverable. Poof.
