AJC:Georgia State interested in Shane Beamer, according to report

Quote:5:58 pm November 20, 2012, by Doug Roberson
Georgia State has expressed an interest in talking to Virginia Tech’s Shane Beamer about its football coaching job, his father Frank, told the Newport News (Va.) Daily Press earlier today. Beamer said that Georgia State hasn’t asked for permission to talk to Shane.
Shane Beamer is the associate head coach and running backs coach for the Hokies, where he’s been for the past two seasons, working for Frank, the Hokies’ longtime coach.
He declined to say Monday if he was going to interview, saying he was focused on Saturday’s game against Virginia.
Georgia State declined to comment because it’s an ongoing coaching search. A call to Beamer’s agent hasn’t been returned.
Beamer, 35, has worked all over the South after playing and graduating from Virginia Tech in 1999. He started as a graduate assistant in Georgia Tech in 2000, before moving to Tennessee in 2001, where he earned a master’s in sports science in 2003. He spent three seasons at Mississippi State, first coaching cornerbacks for two years and then taking over running backs as well as becoming recruiting coordinator. He moved to South Carolina in 2007, where he coached outside linebackers and was co-special teams coordinator. He transitioned to cornerbacks in 2008, before taking over a variety of defensive duties as well as becoming special teams and recruiting coordinator (he recruited the metro Atlanta area) in 2009-10.
Beamer has developed a reputation as a strong recruiter, helping the Gamecocks sign several top-25 classes.
Georgia State athletic director Cheryl Levick has said she would prefer to hire someone with head-coaching experience and who is familiar with recruiting in the South.
She hired Parker Executive Search to assist with the hiring. She is looking for a coach because Bill Curry, the architect of Georgia State’s program, recently retired from coaching.
The Panthers struggled on and off the field under Curry. The team lost 10 of its 11 games this season, dropping its three-year record to 9-23. Attendance has steadily decreased from an average of 16,750 in 2010 to 12,312 this year.
However, the team practices in a state-of-the-art facility, plays in the Georgia Dome and is moving to the Sun Belt Conference, which plays on the FBS level, in 2013.
Georgia State officials had a meet and greet with Beamer when the team practiced on campus before the game at James Madison. He later wrote them a thank you note.
He is married with two children.

That should be a good hire for Ga St, but you would have thought that Curry would have been a good hire.

Good hire but they better open up the pockets. If he turns out to be good he will coach until he can at vt but it's worth it.

Get someone who can recruit. Coach Frank Beamer certainly has a good track record of that. Getting someone from the Beamer coaching tree will add much needed toughness, starting with defense and special teams.

Not possible. The next coach will be (has to be) a 40ish Power Conference OC, right?

If he were hired and had success I don't know if he'd stay in Atlanta until his father stepped down at VT, Frank is only 59, I'd be surprised if he coaches less than five more years. If Shane is still in Atlanta after five years, I doubt he's had the kind of success that Virginia Tech would deem worthy. I could see Georgia State being the job, before the job, before taking over in Blacksburg.
