your welcome.

LOL. Some younger Memphis fans actually consider Memphis "State" to be an insult now, but it's the name of the university where I got my undergraduate degree. 03-cloud9

Maybe culturally or prestige-wise it is idk I'm not from the area. But that name is college bball royalty to tons of sports fans around the nation.

True. Tell that to our younger fans, lol. The name changed in 1994, IIRC. Now, some message board posters use it to irritate those fans.

Pretty ironic. Denny Crum used to call us "Memphis" to do the same thing. 03-lmfao

Sounds like the university has done a horrible job of brand management around the renaming transition. They should've consulted the St. John's people who seemed to do a better job (although far from perfect) managing the Redmen = Redstorm transition. 03-lmfao

Not at all. There is no real issue anywhere in the country, outside young Memphis fans who never went to Memphis State. No brand campaign is going to change their minds, any more than I'm willing to feel bad about the Memphis State name, lol. That's just not the name they are used to when they attended, and a few message board posters simply do it to irritate them, even though the young alumni know very well what the old name is.

Not exactly a tidal wave of confusion, lol. Just a few fans who let something silly like that bother them.

Nobody calls Penny "Anfernee," lol. Especially since he still plays pickup games with our team, and regularly schools them.

Because he's a Cincy fan and wants to know who will be dunking all over his Bearcats as they get bounced.

Still waiting for Pastner to beat a top 25 team.

he's in his 3rd season...he'll get that win, and it should be this season....

Actually, this is his 4th....as he wasn't able to beat even one Top 25 team or win a NCAA Tourn 1st round game during his first 3 years as Head Coach of Memphis.

he's ENTERING his 4th season...but it hasn't started YET.

They were playing UCLA in the national championship before most of you were born. I find it laughable some of the potshots they take. They put a legit 15-18k fans in their arena every game and against some of the CUSA dreck they are forced to play. Throw them in the BE for BB and they will rockin on a national stage again.

Guess what: Memphis will get their **** together in football soon, too. Too many core strengths not to do well. BTW, the Liberty Bowl improvements look awesome.

True, but he does it to himself. He sometimes mentions never preparing before a game, and it always shows.

Ok so what is the consensus on that, I grew up and have always said Memphis State, my senior year they became Memphis. Is it insulting to call Tigers Memphis State or is it old school cool? I love to hate Memphis and am glad they are joining the Big East. So if I playfully call it Memphis State is that a not a big deal, a nudge in the ribs from a rival, or are those fighting words?

Depends on how old the person is you're aiming it at. But frankly, it's been used so much, that most Memphis fans just don't react any more.

It took Cal 3 years before he even made the tournament. He had Wagner, Massie, Barron, Wise and Burks on the 2001-02 team and couldn't even make the tournament with that talent. BTW, 3 of those kids on that team went on to the NBA.

True Josh Pastner has yet to beat a ranked team. But Cal didn't either until his 3rd year and din't win a NCAA tournament game until his 4th at Memphis.

True. Also depends on how it is said. You can generally tell when it is used as a dig.

RE: Memphis '13 class just got even better
It's all good. This is the season Josh will get both those handled. It's hard taking over a program like Memphis and duplicate the success of Cal. It's just not gonna happen specially by a new, young, first time coach. Josh has done a fantastic job the last 3 years and each year seems to get better. As I said I firmly believe that Josh, staff and the Tigers will do something special this season. However, if Josh had gone to other schools, I don't think that nationally people would be talking about top 25 wins and NCAA success. Only at a few programs do you get that and we are one of them. We were so successful that people became accustomed to seeing us crush, trash, destroy (and any other words you wanna put in there) top 25 teams regularly and always go far in the NCAA's.

Josh will be fine. Memphis will be fine and we will be back. Great things take time. Josh might not have had to start over as far as building national relevance, facilities, or fan support. But he did have to completely rebuild Memphis' roster with no recruiting class initially. Then alot of young (Great, but not 1 and done) players. This season we have the talent, depth and experience to compete with and beat anyone.

I think it became old school cool. My parents went to Memphis State, and I went to Memphis.......when I tell some people over 40 that, then its like I'm in the club. I started at Memphis in 1996, and it had just changed, but I grew up with Memphis State.
