RE: If Soccer was like what I just saw.
Guess all the rent money from UT is paying off for the Buffs!
Seriously though, NCAA division I institutions losing to NAIA schools in any sport is simply embarrassing.

I don't put any more stock into this game than I do (in basketball) when DII LeMoyne beat Syracuse; when University of Indianapolis beat UT; or when Butler got beat by Northern State. Coach Calabrese was using this game solely for experimental purposes and maybe even a lesson in humility. That guy knows what he's doing.

RE: If Soccer was like what I just saw.
.
I am ABSOLUTELY NOT believing what I just saw!!! I went to the Belmont website to see what's up with those people. Their lead-off article was titled:
Bruins Edge Bucs In First Exhibition of the Season
It's the type of headline with which we're all too accustomed. Turns out, their men's soccer team beat D-II Christian Brothers University (The Buccaneers) out of Memphis. Upon further investigation, I learned that CBU's website is gobucsgo.com. I'm relieved it's just an odd coincidence and that we're not stuck in the Twilight Bruin Zone.
Here's the article: http://belmontbruins.com/sports/m-soccer...08155osbcw
***********************************************
Since I just learned of their existance (and share their feelings after a vs. Belmont game), I've gotta give a shout-out to our Memphis cousins:
GO BUCCANEERS!!!

RE: If Soccer was like what I just saw.
If it were an NCAA member institution I could probably agree with you. Milligan is NAIA Division II, I'm not so sure that my beloved John Battle Trojans couldn't hang with them atleast for a half. Even expiramenting with lineups, different plays, etc... there's no excuse. ETSU in any sport should be able to beat Milligan just on athletes alone.
Perhaps Calabrese didn't fix whatever went wrong late last year after they were "ranked."

And that's the ugly reality of the whole situation.

I wouldn't put too much into that game. Check the box score. Milligan scored both goals in the second half. We didn't use our starting keeper, Ryan Coulter, at all. Ronnie Hreha, who didn't log a single minute last season, played the entire game. Quite a few of our guys played half to three quarters of the game. We outshot them 20-5. We used the game as an exhibition to find out some things about our team, more than beat the other team. This is the quote from the Milligan coach on their web-site -
“In all fairness to ETSU, they experimented a lot and moved some guys around, but we can't take away from our guys for getting a result against a Division I opponent."
Calabrese is a fantastic coach. No reason to worry.

Not worried at all, just saying theres never an excuse for losing at home to an inferior opponent. IM sure Mexico isnt making excuses, but if theres one thing ETSU has excelled at over the years, its making excuses.

Excuses, excuses. Out shot them 20-5, now that's what makes this sport a really exciting spectator sport. Like we beat them 10-2 on foul balls, or 64-51 on field goal attempts.

RE: If Soccer was like what I just saw.
Now how is that Buc quarterback looking? Is he going to be able to run the new offense? Does that sophmore look better at running the ball? How about the linebackers? Is the defensive line mature enough to hold teams on third down? Now there are the things I am worrying about. When we become a state university again we will actually have somethng to worry about(and enjoy) in the fall. Now all we have is baloney.

Well, they beat College of Charleston, the team that put them out of the NCAA tournament two years ago, 2-0 last night. I'd say that's more likely the norm than the 2-1 loss to Milligan. I guess we'll see next Tuesday.

I'm sure Charleston was just playing scrubs, expiramenting with lineups and such. You know....

Talking about soccer now is the only option because that's all there is to talk about with ETSU sports during FOOTBALL SEASON. This is FOOTBALL SEASON!!!!!

I wonder if some of us would rather gripe about not having football than to actually have it. If ETSU does get it back, I guess some of us won't have anything to say. Heaven forbid, ANYthing else goes well.

I do not think people enjoy griping about not having football on our campus. It is more than just a gripe it is the future of our University. When football is back we can focus on things like the quarterback's performance in last week's game. How the coaches are doing. How recruiting is going. Tailgating on campus. Meeting alumni, fans, students and friends on a Saturday afternoon in September and October. Nothing wrong with any of our sports but the AD currently is trying to force soccer as a replacement for football and that will not be accepted. Possibly Dr. Noland will bring the ETSU alumni base back together and we can go to the football games and the soccor games and be a state university again.

Call it what you will --- gripping, complaining, etc. Would boring be a better description? Fall sports at ETSU is BOARING, and we all know why. It's the most boaring sports season of the year at ETSU. This cannot be overstated. On the other hand, suppose we could join the pretenders in the athletic department and pretend how excited we are with football's replacement, soccer. You know, tow the party line, pretend that ETSU is still on the cutting edge of a movement that will eventually see large numbers of FCS football programs going out of business.
Which version should we go with?

I tend to agree with you and others here who think soccer is boring (ok, more than tend to) and not a reasonable substitute for American football. I'm told by soccer aficionados that it's because I don't understand the sport. Yeah probably, whatever. Still, I'd rather the soccer team win than lose as, I think, most of would. Heck, I'd root for the ETSU underwater tiddlywink team over Lipscomb or Little Sisters of the Poor. The soccer team wins, big deal, it's not real football. The soccer team loses, why even THEY can't win. Being glad the soccer team wins isn't a matter of going with one "version" or the other.
