Bingo, and that's why he is where he is. He's consistently recruited well, his made a difference in the community and most importantly, the administration loves him. The bad losses to CMU aside, he'd have to have a nightmarish year to not keep his job. Even then, I'd argue he's safe. Does anybody remember Gary Darnell?

Darnell was at WMU for 8 years. His last season was a nightmare. He was able to get WMU to the MACC twice, both times losing at Marshall...but he definately left his mark on our program, in a bad way.

He's not safe if he has that nightmarish season.

Darnell's first 7 years
45-36 (35-21 MAC)
Cubit's record after 7 years
47-39 (34-21 MAC)

Going 2-10 or worse in Kalamazoo will pretty much get everyone fired unless it's their first year. You can go 4-7 wins and putter along without much heat, but lose double digits and you have the AD and the boosters that do care at the last game of the season where 37 non-band members are in the stands.

Al Molde won the conference in 1988, and from 1990-95 won 6 or 7 games every year. Goes 2-9 in 1996 and is canned.

5th DC (Shafer, Morrison, Miller, Cohen, Nagy).

Al got fired more for being 3-7 vs. CMU. The 2-9 was just the convenient opportunity.

Cubit has not even got to championship game and is 2-5 vs. Central.

But it would probably take two disastrous seasons or a big off-field scandal (unlikely) to cost him his job.
