Hey this is James from AStateNation. I just wanted to say how much I respect what Mark has created at the Den. I hope our message boards at AStateNation.com will grow to be as big. I truly consider Mark a friend. We talk a lot, I have learned a lot from him since arriving in Jonesboro. We went and had lunch once arrived, there isn't to many bigger ASU Fans than Mark, well maybe Governor Beebe. I appreciate everyone's support this last year, we are posting unbelievable growth on our site. I couldn't do it without Mark's support and friendship. Thanks again for everyone giving AStateNation a chance to earn your business.

Glad to hear that, heard the same thing from Luke early on, so hope it works out better for you, and that is not a reflection on Mark.

I'm just like a lot of people, we simply asked ASU to be proactive in supporting a site where ASU fans could get good factual information, especially about recruiting. Seemed to us everyone else had one.

I did not know about AStateNation until a assistant coach under Freeze told me about it and recommended it.

He knew I followed recruiting and AStateNation can provide information about recruiting that the University cannot.

Mark does not like recruiting.

It is also nice that every thread does not end up with the same handfull of posters calling each other names.

I agree - that little clique turns a lot of folks off with their antics.

I was invited to sit down front at a basketball game by an ASU fan who knew most of the guys who dominate the Den, and he also called them a 'clique'.

That is the only complaint I have ever heard about The Den.

I confess. I will not call 17 year olds and ask them where they are going to college, but that info is available at a reasonable price from James.

I admit the namecalling gets a little crazy sometimes, but Ive never had an issue with it. Most of the guys on there know each other from ASU Games, so I assime a lot of it is just playful in nature.

i was hoping someone would get my 'mean girls' reference.

i think it is just the nature of a board as old as the den. i know haven has been around since '98 and we have some chopbusting that goes on amongst folks that know each other.

if you didn't know the players you'd think they hate each other.

back when i was still on the firewater i had to apologize to a female member that was present in a chat where i went off on an idiot.

she told me she always looked at the board and the chatroom as a virtual locker room which is dominated by guys and expected some of that type of behaviour.

i know that some of the new guys to the board have complained about haven in the same way. and haven really isn't bad about dogging out new people....unless they mention they are also uk fans and you're gonna find that dynamic on any regional university sports board when the land grant u is brought up in a positive light.

i'm amused when i'm reading the den. i can tell that several of them dog each other out but i also assume they know each other.

the people that post are far outnumbered by the people that just read and don't get much feedback. i've met many people that read haven every day and are registered but simply never post.

i can't name the times i've been stopped and asked if i'm who i am. i usually am a bit defensive as i had a friend stopped in a ballgame and a family wanted to whoop his ass over something he said about a player. i pretty much never have dogged out players but i'm pretty raw at times and have no idea which way the person might be coming at me when they ask. they usually say i make 'em laugh so it's all good.

We get a lot of the same thing. One thing that hurts us is that we have a good number of razorback fans in Jonesboro, just like Bowling Green has numbers of Kentucky and Louisville fans. I cant count the number of times that a razorback fan in Jonesboro registered on our board and tried to come in peace, with us accepting their fandom, when in reality many ASU fans, myself included, will stop at nothing to make sure that Jonesboro is an all ASU town, and as a result, we dont take well to non ASU fans in Jonesboro, and will certainly never respect their wishes.

Part of our issue also goes back to Steve Roberts, who according to what I have been told, really did not like our board. We had several in our athletic department who thought our board was a bad influence on ASU fans. That has changed a lot recently. Freeze had personal family members posting on our board, so I know he was more accepting of us. Malzahn to this point has seemed accepting.

I get the same thing you do out there, questions about who you are on the board. Thankfully, most of our fans dont bash players, so we dont have many issues with players family. But there are a lot of curious readers, who just want to know who you are.

Just like the Haven...its the lurkers who make the rash decisions on us.

RE: Five Questions for ASU
Yeah I was at a high school game and the dad of the "top" player on the team got excited thinking I was there to scout his kid who was a senior. While I said I was just a fan (there to hear my daughter in the pep band), I really wanted to tell him, "Dude face reality, it is late February of your son's senior year. If he hasn't already heard from a school, he isn't going to hear from a school."

RE: Five Questions for ASU
The Den has been around since 1998 and the place has changed a lot. For years it was almost exclusively out-of-town fans who had no source of information. The local TV wasn't online, the Jonesboro paper and the Little Rock paper weren't online. The university didn't have a web site and neither did athletics.

Now our user base is mostly local to Jonesboro, they get more ASU and opponent news today than was ever available to even locals back then.

It's a place to talk and complain and share an opinion because there are so many other easily accessible news outlets.

As to Steve, I think he failed to read the advice I used to have posted. "If you are a coach don't read this site. If you are winning people will think you can walk on water and that isn't healthy for you or your family. If you are losing people are going to blame you and that isn't healthy for you or your family."

Steve won 11 games his first two seasons and fans were in love considering Hollis had needed four years to win his last 11 and had won 13 in five years.

Then 2004 rolled around and we went 3-8 and were only competitive in two losses. Then 2005 went 6-5 and won the three team tie-breaker but had only one back-to-back win situation. The OT 3-0 win over FAU got us to 4-3 and we then traded losses and wins to 6-5 and the two losses weren't competitive. It really set the stage for frustration.

Now when people turned in 2004, I was posting on the board and the front page defending Steve. By the time 2008 rolled around, I was off the bandwagon. You start the year with a win at Texas A&M and limp out to 6-6. There was a lot of complaining from Steve about the Sun Belt bowl situation and the contract situation but I kept looking back at the schedule. Three point loss at home to Southern Miss on a botched play. Blew two score fourth quarter leads at Louisiana and FIU. All I saw was a team that had almost been good that fell apart when it had a chance to seize success. Went in the last game at Troy with the New Orleans Bowl ready to hand the winner an invitation and Birmingham on hand to give Troy an invite if ASU won. The game in the stats column was a dead heat but ASU was -3 in turnovers and lost 35-9.

If we had been an NFL team. He'd have been fired as soon as the team got back home because something clearly "broke" with that team. A 4-8 record in 2009 and 2010 proved that.

At that point someone was right and someone was wrong. Many fans thought Steve had the kids to win but had lost them (my view) and Steve and some fans thought we were doing as good as we could with the resources we had.

I think Hugh Freeze demonstrated who was correct.

RE: Five Questions for ASU
by and large few people rip players on h. haven.

nothing like you see on a ut vol board or an ohio state board where the traffic is huge and most remain anonymous.

coaches are a different story. ken mcdummy was making 350k per year to drive our program in the dirt. i'm sure dude hated me as i was relentless on him before anyone else was.

i'm pretty sure a majority of the administration thinks haven is full of idiots. but when i posted that one time an administration member replied that it wasn't true and i was stirring things up.

i know it's read all the way up to the president's office as my name was mentioned by him in a meeting. he wanted to know why i called ken mcdonald 'r-mac'. when it was explained he supposedly just shook his head.

the university paper wrote an article on the power of the haven. the administration didn't want it published but of course couldn't stop it.

the haven had been crucifying mcdummy for 2 years but what got him fired was old fashioned asses in the seats.....or lack of.

as i told someone....the genie is out of the bottle. message boards aren't going away. for good or bad.
