Your thread title says that Jurich is backtracking. This would imply that Jurich made a previous comment or statement that either said 1) UofL was going to leave for another conference or 2) that Jurich didn't respect the Big East or was unwilling to help it succeed.
In regards to point #1, Jurich has repeatedly said that UofL would keep its options open in regards to conference membership. For example:
August 31st, 2011
Sept 18th, 2011
Oct 29th, 2011
April 6th, 2012
April 20th, 2012
I'm not sure how going from "we are going to keep our options open" to "we will listen if others offer" can be considered backtracking in any sense of the word. If anything, he has been saying the
exact same thing since August of last year. Now before I get some idiotic comment to the tone of "yeah, but he keeps bringing up the Big 12! He keeps saying UofL wants out! *insert other stupid, regurgitated comment here that posters like to repeat without ever actually fact checking here*!", I'll point out that Jurich's comments about UofL keeping its options open are during public interviews where he is asked a direst question by the interviewer. I suppose he could say "Well, bananas!" and avoid the question all together or just make something up on the spot like every other AD seems to do, but the man actually has taken the honesty approach.
In regards to point #2, I would point out that in
every public interview, Jurich has been extremely complementary of the Big East. For example, here is a snippet from the State of UofL athletics interview he gave back in December
(link). Starts at 8:30.
"Well [conference affiliation] is very important to us. It's probably the top thing on my agenda right now and something I will continue to work at. There's no secret...we've worked very hard to be attractive to many conferences but in particular the Big 12 Conference. The one thing I don't want to do Eric is do anything that would be a negative to the Big East because the Big East has been so good to us. [...] I want to make sure that as we do look, we want to be upfront with everybody and all parties involved. I've been very fluid with the commissioner and with Judy Genshaft, who is the president of USF who is the president of the executive council for our conference in the Big East. And I want to make sure that everybody knows that I'm not doing anything behind anybody's back."
This is what I don't get. Jurich has gone out of his way to keep the Big East leadership in the loop with regards to UofL's intentions. He wasn't willing to go the lawsuit route of WVU. He hasn't gone behind anyone's back when talking with other conferences. He has complimented the Big East in every interview he has ever given. If anything, the man has been honest and honorable in dealing with the Big East and yet some poster seem to revel in the man "learning his place".
Here is the bottom line. Juirch is paid by and works for the University of Louisville. He answers to the University of Louisville. His job is to build and maintain one of the most successful and profitable athletic departments in the Big East and to position the University of Louisville to be successful. That is what Jurich is paid to do.
What he isn't paid to blow sunshine and rainbows up the ***es of disgruntled or johnnie-come-lately Big East fans. He isn't paid to lick the boot of the Big East or to be the conference cheerleader. He isn't paid to make other schools competitive or desirable products. He isn't here to make you feel better about your school or your conference. So why does everyone here act like it is the job of the AD of UofL to do anything other than what is best for the university that employs him?

I'm confused. A second ago, Jurich was backtracking and sounded like a man who needed to "learn his place". Now he is an upstanding man of virtue and honesty that should be emulated?

If posters actually bother to do a 5 second Google search, they'd realize what I posted in response to point #1 above. The man has been saying the same thing for over half a year. It isn't like this is poorly documented or hard to find information.
