RE: FIRE BILLY GODWIN!
Ruff gets at least 2 more years if it were up to me. Football isn't like baseball or basketball. You can't bring in a lot of immediate help or expect freshman to play well. The physicality of the game dictates it will take at least a couple years to build players and we have a lot of good young players and a great guy to build them. I've also seen enough improvement on Defense and that the offense can be big time that I'm satisfied with the overall plan.

The bottom line is think we need to give Ruff every chance we can we can to succeed. If he does we could seriously have a decade or more to follow where we don't have to worry about him using us as a stepping stone like anyone else that would come. To me that's worth the price right now even of a couple more mediocre seasons because you see how hard change over after a coach leaves is. It can ruin programs.

With the new money in football it's only going to get harder for us to keep a good coach. We really REALLY need Ruff to be what we hope and if we do fire him it needs to be absolutely clear that he can't be it. He needs at least 4 years IMO maybe even 5 depending on how it plays out so that all those questions are answered. The greater potential with this offense and him being an ECU guy is far to great to pull the trigger to soon on him.

Godwin is on more iffy ground at this point. He's been here a while and our baseball is a top 25 type job. We need more results.

I love how every ECU thread eventually turns to football :ecu:

Anybody got a countdown 'til the first game?

Probably Clemson. They have a weekend series win against FSU and are 3-1 against the No. 1 Seminoles overall. They also took a series from Miami.

The only ECU series win over a tournament team is Stony Brook.

And Memphis/UAB

Last year, Ruff proved to me he can make adjustments to the defense. This year, I hope he proves he can make adjustments to the offense, particularly when it comes to turnovers. This will be, or should I say could be, the first year we'll be starting a Quarterback who fits the Air Raid system. I can't wait to see how we do. I am very high on our defense, and hope the offense looks more refined.

I will say that THIS YEAR's baseball team had a young staff and we did better than I thought we would early on, but there just wasn't any sore of improvement as the season progressed. BG's been there long enough, I think it's time to see what somebody else can do.

Not trying to stir the pot because I think BG's time has reached it's end, but who do you go get? Better not be too quick to fire a guy because the grass may not be greener with a new guy. maybe mcmullen, possibly Eason? I don't know enough about the baseball coaching field of candidates to throw anyone out there.

I'm in the same boat, and can't really speak on potential hires, but he's had 7 years. We need some new blood.

RE: FIRE BILLY GODWIN!
Godwin will not get us to Omaha. He hasn't carried the torch that LeClair left us. We have backslid into mediocrity. He is an average coach, so he gets outcoached a lot. I know a players parents and they see nothing but outcoaching going on. They have given me examples. For instance when we played UNC last year they pointed out one of those moments. I believe a right handed batter was subbed in to pinch hit for UNC. Billy had a right handed pitcher in and wanted to make a substitute for the pitcher. Before he even threw a pitch to the batter he brought in a left handed pitcher. UNC's coach Fox then pulled his right handed hitter and substituted a lefty to bat in his place to counter Godwin because he never threw a pitch. UNC's left handed hitter then rocked it. All he had to do is throw one pitch to the batter and then make a substitution for a pitcher and that would have prevented Fox from making his counter substitution. Just throwing an intentional ball first would have forced Fox to keep the batter in because he would have been officially at bat with a 1-0 count.

True. Forget about that scenario.

Was thinking more in line of the obvious or at-large tournament teams that had performed well all year long.

Question: Does ECU recruit ACC caliber talent at all positions for baseball -- especially "pitchers"? If "yes", then I believe it's fair to assert that BG has underachieved, assuming the "bar" is set at "getting ECU to the CWS".

I don't really think any of those stipulations are all that relevant. First of all the caliber recruits we are getting falls on BG. Secondly he is failing by ECU's own standards.

Fun facts about Billy Godwin's reign as ECU's baseball head coach:

1. He has the 3rd worst winning percentage our last 10 ECU baseball head coaches since 1951 and the worst since 1979.

2. He is responsible for our only 2 missed regionals in our 10 years in C-USA and our only 2 missed regionals in the last 13 years.

3. In 43 years of conference play 4 coaches have managed to finish a season with a losing record in conference. Hal Baird in 1983, Gary Overton 5 times in 1992 and 1994-1997, Keith LeClair in 1998 the first year following Overton's running the program into the ground, and Billy Godwin twice in 2006 and 2010. The 2006 season followed 7 consecutive winning seasons in conference and was our worst in conference win percentage since 1992 and 3rd worst ever.

4. Prior to BG, ECU had an all time in conference win percentage of .642. BG's in conference win percentage is .554. In 4 years of C-USA play before BG, ECU's C-USA win percentage was .624 under coach LeClair and Coach Mazey.

5. In the first 4 years of C-USA play our worst in conference win percentage was .550 in the first year of C-USA play (just 0.4% or .004 worse than BG's all time C-USA win percentage). BG has dipped below that .550 mark in 3 out of 7 years. Under LeClair and Mazey ECU had a C-USA win percentage of .638. BG has surpassed that percentage in only one of 7 years (2009).

6. In 73 years of baseball at ECU we have had 4 losing seasons (one in the inaugural year of ECU baseball and 3 since). BG is responsible for one of those losing seasons in 2010*.

7. In 63 season since 1950, BG is responsible for the worst single season winning percentage in 2010*. He is also responsible for the 16th (2006), 24th (2012), 27th (2007), and 31st (2011) worst single season winning percentages in that time period. All of those rank in the bottom half for that era. His best season was 2009 where he earned the 23rd best winning percentage of the 63 year period. The two coaches prior to BG earned the 7th and 9th best win percentages in that time period. Mazey earned the 7th best percentage in 2004, and LeClair earned the 9th best in 2001.

8. In the 7 seasons prior to Billy Godwin, the Pirates compiled 45 or more wins in 4 different years. In the 7 seasons with BG as coach, the Pirates have compiled 45 or more wins in only one season.

9. In the 63 seasons since 1950 there have been 10 head baseball coaches at ECU. Of those 10 coaches, BG is the only one not to have had a season with a single season win percentage over .700.

* The Pirates were forced to forfeit games because of the participation of ineligible players. According to the ECU record books, the Pirates finished the 2010 season with a record of 15-27-0. Before the forfeiture of games the Pirate's record was 32-27 (.542). This would have ranked as the teams 11th worst win percentage since 1950.
