I don't really think any of those stipulations are all that relevant. First of all the caliber recruits we are getting falls on BG. Secondly he is failing by ECU's own standards.
Fun facts about Billy Godwin's reign as ECU's baseball head coach:
1. He has the 3rd worst winning percentage our last 10 ECU baseball head coaches since 1951 and the worst since 1979.
2. He is responsible for our only 2 missed regionals in our 10 years in C-USA and our only 2 missed regionals in the last 13 years.
3. In 43 years of conference play 4 coaches have managed to finish a season with a losing record in conference. Hal Baird in 1983, Gary Overton 5 times in 1992 and 1994-1997, Keith LeClair in 1998 the first year following Overton's running the program into the ground, and Billy Godwin twice in 2006 and 2010. The 2006 season followed 7 consecutive winning seasons in conference and was our worst in conference win percentage since 1992 and 3rd worst ever.
4. Prior to BG, ECU had an all time in conference win percentage of .642. BG's in conference win percentage is .554. In 4 years of C-USA play before BG, ECU's C-USA win percentage was .624 under coach LeClair and Coach Mazey.
5. In the first 4 years of C-USA play our worst in conference win percentage was .550 in the first year of C-USA play (just 0.4% or .004 worse than BG's all time C-USA win percentage). BG has dipped below that .550 mark in 3 out of 7 years. Under LeClair and Mazey ECU had a C-USA win percentage of .638. BG has surpassed that percentage in only one of 7 years (2009).
6. In 73 years of baseball at ECU we have had 4 losing seasons (one in the inaugural year of ECU baseball and 3 since). BG is responsible for one of those losing seasons in 2010*.
7. In 63 season since 1950, BG is responsible for the worst single season winning percentage in 2010*. He is also responsible for the 16th (2006), 24th (2012), 27th (2007), and 31st (2011) worst single season winning percentages in that time period. All of those rank in the bottom half for that era. His best season was 2009 where he earned the 23rd best winning percentage of the 63 year period. The two coaches prior to BG earned the 7th and 9th best win percentages in that time period. Mazey earned the 7th best percentage in 2004, and LeClair earned the 9th best in 2001.
8. In the 7 seasons prior to Billy Godwin, the Pirates compiled 45 or more wins in 4 different years. In the 7 seasons with BG as coach, the Pirates have compiled 45 or more wins in only one season.
9. In the 63 seasons since 1950 there have been 10 head baseball coaches at ECU. Of those 10 coaches, BG is the only one not to have had a season with a single season win percentage over .700.
* The Pirates were forced to forfeit games because of the participation of ineligible players. According to the ECU record books, the Pirates finished the 2010 season with a record of 15-27-0. Before the forfeiture of games the Pirate's record was 32-27 (.542). This would have ranked as the teams 11th worst win percentage since 1950.
