Never said it was. I just find the excuses not to have it hilarious and hypocritical.

Good luck in talking the states that have it into giving it up. The construction industry in those states than you for your anti-lottery stance.

If you are on about education, then go to Homewood and see their plan in action. They got a world class education thing going thanks to community involvement and local earmarked taxes which the members of the community are happy to pay. The dividends to the school district and its students are there for all to see.

Gambling isn't needed where there is sound planning and commitment.

The entire argument's an excuse to avoid the real issue: we want stuff, but we don't want to pay for it. It's the American Way.

And yet here you are? If the grass is so green over there then what keeps you with us in this backwater?

To keep to my metaphor (What was that old movie?): "The Grass is always greener over the septic tank" 03-wink

I have more reasons to stay living here than I care to admit but I have spent over half of my adult life working in states that have the lottery building projects so I can support my family here. It sucks to only be home every other weekend or in some cases once a month.

Education is a no-brianer. Throw out Hoover and go visit some other school systems (I actually have) get back to me.

Bah! Admit it. Them places is nice to visit and all but you wouldn't wanna live there.

If we turn here like there then there won't be any here left--only "there".

(A.K.A. Stars fell on Alabama, NOT Georgia!)

Hell I will give you 10 more good systems in Alabama and raise you a hundred that are pitiful. I have visited some. Want me to e-mail you some pictures of toilets that require a water hose to flush in one? How about one where they fight rats for their breakfast? Want to see one with a ceiling coming down in a classroom?

I'll take the pictures, but only if you promise to also include pictures of the "less fortunate" schools from lottery states. 03-shhhh

Oh, there I went and let the cat outta the bag.

RE: NBR: How much money is the state losing on lottery ticket sales?
I have no pictures from less fortunate schools from lottery states. I am not seeing this cat. There are actually less fortunate schools in every state in the country but by far Alabama has a huge issue with education, much bigger issue than in many states. I didn't bring up education either. I was leaving that out but since you brought it up it is a problem.

Look Alabama can do what the hell it wants. That's fine. Not sure why some folks get all hot and bothered about it when you have MUCH bigger issues in this state. Thank God for Mississippi.

You guys can have you lottery fight. I will play it when I am able but I won't go out of my way to do it. It should be up to the people but that's not how things work in Alabama. If Alabama has one fine if not fine but just make sure when you are arguing don't argue out of both sides of your mouth.

Heck I enjoy working in Florida which is where I may end up next due to lack of work in this state.

I'm not so much bothered about it as disappointed. So many in this country take the easy way out anymore and I'd like for us to be different. Mostly we aren't. But in some odd ways, like the Lottery, we are.

I guess we can be the last ship to sink. That's all I want. To be on that plank with Kate.

That reason may be the most legitimate I have read on here.

I'm all for people spending their money on whatever they want, I just don't think the government should be in the business of running a gambling operation, which is basically what a lotto is. If some private company wants to run it, then that's fine with me.

I just don't think you can gamble your way into prosperity or payday loan yourself into prosperity.

If someone wants to blow their money on it, knock yourself out. I value my money.

Yes, I purchased a lottery ticket or two in my lifetime, but it was mainly because everyone in my department at work went in on it.

I would be extremely happy if some type of lottery paid for my kid's education, however I just don't trust the government to implement it.

I enrolled my oldest in the Alabama Pact fund several years ago & I have no idea from one month to the next if the state will live up to its commitment. Right now, the supreme court of Alabama says that the agreement with some members to cut off the tuition at 2010 rates wasn't legit.

I have no idea how my youngest two daughters will go to college. They are both bright, but even then it is difficult to get scholarships.

A lottery is a tax on the mathematically impaired.

That said, I buy ten or so tickets virtually any time I go to Georgia. What the hell, if you don't bet you can't win.

Just don't spend the rent money on it.

RE: NBR: How much money is the state losing on lottery ticket sales?
Friday I was in Ft Payne, a buddy wanted a few lotto tickets so we drove up to Rising Fawn. There were 34 cars parked at, near and across the road from the gas station. I sat in the parking lot and watched 6 cars come in and get gas in the 20 minutes I was there.

Everyone else was coming out with hand fulls of mega millions tickets, and/or scratch offs.

My buddy went in, bought a few and came out. He was saying that the bammer couple in front of him bought 200 mega millions tickets. Two black teens parked beside me with a Jefferson county tag had at least 30 each, and two of their buddies came out as well with at least that many.

It was amazing to see that many people spending that much money at once.

RE: NBR: How much money is the state losing on lottery ticket sales?
Want to see some real "twisted logicians" at work? Demand a BCS state school to refrain from recruiting any kids whose high school program is supported by gaming income. If you check the two BCS schools recent recruiting results, you will find few top recruits from their home state (I think Bama signed 7 of 26+) in their top 10 national recruiting classes. If these two were required by law to sign only from nongaming states, where besides Alabama could they go to recruit? Name a recent major contributing player at either school and chances are they came from a "gaming state" like FL, GA, TX, MI and so forth. How many recent NCs would the two have if denied "Cam", Richardson or the others?

A proposal such as that would get a lottery here in a heartbeat.
