No Temple vote on Big East
ALSO ON PHILLY.COM

Source: 'The Big East needs Temple'

The Temple board of trustees didn't vote about whether to accept an offer to join the Big East Conference - if an offer is made - during Wednesday's conference call meeting, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

However, one source said the group did disucss how it would pay any fees needed to exit its present conferences.

Patrick J. O'Connor, chairman of Temple's board of trustees, did not return phone calls, and Ray Betzner, the Temple assistant vice president of university communications, could not be reached for comment.

According to reports, discussions between the Big East and Temple regarding the Owls' joining the conference, possibly for all sports, are hitting the final stages.

Assuming Temple receives and accepts an invitation, the school would have to quickly negotiate exit fees. The Owls are members of the Mid-American Conference for football and the Atlantic Ten Conference for all other sports.

The MAC has a $2.5 million fee for an exit with two years' notice. So Temple would have to negotiate for an immediate exit similar to West Virginia's from the Big East.

If its discussing exit fees then we know what they plan on doing even if they didn't take an official vote.

This is just Temple's time in the media spotlight and they are trying to soak up as much media coverage as they can.

Negotiating with three conferences on fees is probably what is taking so long but it is obvious what the end result is going to be.

Exactly. They're trying to get everything sorted out before making the jump next year. I don't see any harm in that.

RE: No Temple vote on Big East
Once Boise publicly stated that they were not coming over for 2012 all this was pretty obvious regardless of the show that Temple is putting on. It is really just a matte of $$$ and how much the Big East is willing to help them out with.

The only way this goes bad is if the Big East does not help them with the fees. If the Big East tries to make them pay for all of it themselves then I would be worried. It would be a real eye opener about greed of the current members. Might have to rethink joining for the rest of us.

Have they even asked? I haven't heard any media or connected source say they have.
