RE: Kent State vs. Ohio U.
I am just happy to get a good win over a pretty good OU team. There were a lot of people saying that OU was playing the best basketball in the MAC coming in to last night. This same team just waxed CrAkron Sunday night. Few thoughts about the game:
1. Hats off to Coach Senderoff by not starting the 3 starters who had not been playing great during the 3 game skid. The message seemed to work and the three that did start did a good job of setting a tone defensively to start the game.
2. When Guyton plays like he has been lately (hitting 3's, but also driving hard to the rim) he is one of the top players in this league.
3. Chris Evans is somewhat athletic.
4. What is going on with Justin Greene?? The man looks lost out there at times.
5. If we defend as hard as we did in the first half we are going to be a tough out in any tournament. We have enough athlete's to be able to run around and get some steals and our post players did a good job of holding every thing down.
Also, I think maybe they said let's make Cooper beat us because we did not seem to help off of the other guys as much in the second half.
BEAT AKRON!!!

A little off topic, but how good will OU be next year...every meaningful player back.

Just wondering why everyone is hating on justin greene. He is your only and let me repeat your only low post player. He the friggin poy. He is playing on what I've heard is a very bad ankle. He plays his tail off and all you guys talk about is turnovers. Do you realize that most teams leading scorer also leads in turnovers. You take greene away and see how many games kent wins. Why was he not starting? He has scored in double figures the last 15 or 16 games. Isn't he the second leading scorer in mac conf play

When Jim Christian was here he tried explaining to anyone who would listen that he felt starting was the most overrated thing in basketball. I'm completely on board with that.
Greene didn't start last night. He played 28 minutes. He played 33 against BG and 27 against Miami. His season average is 30 so who the hell cares if he didn't start?

Greene not starting was a ploy. A motivational factor for everyone involved. The guys who started on the bench and the guys who started in their place. Everyone knows JG's value to this team. Doesn't mean he can't use some coaching/motivation from time to time and nobody who plays D1 basketball is immune to criticism.

Agreed 100 percent Danny. Another thing that confuses me a little bit is the description of Kent "letting off the gas" for the last 12 minutes. We had nearly a 10-minute period where we did not hit a field goal. That's tough, yes but isn't the bigger failure there on OU for failing to capitalize?

Certainly. But I think it tells you more about Armon Bassett's character. He didn't give a crap until he got to Cleveland.
flyingflash: Not sure what you mean. OU lost two starters last year.

We have a mindset of lets get a lead, then lets all chuck 3's or try alley oops and all "get" our own and then if things get tough we will try to turn it on and play KSU ball. Right now we get nothing in the half court sets except 3's or one on one. We have no offensive flow because Greene has a serious case of butter fingers or turnoveritis and when does catch it teams have figured out you double him and he's not tall enough or quick enough to pass out of it and we aren't smart enough to do anything but stand by the 3 pt line rather than cut to the hole.
Nice W that prevents us from playing 5 games but we still have serious flaws.
And for those of you that hate OU now just wait till next year when they lose no one!!!
Man oh Man. The same dirty laundry that was hanging around here after the three game winning streak. What more can they do than come together last night, give an effort and get the W.
Kent has flaws. They are well documented here (by myself included) but for goodness sakes its like you are waiting for them to lose next week, which they very well could, and then jump all over (insert player's or coach's name here).

I was speaking on behalf of Kent. Very high expectations around here coming in to the year with just about everyone back.

I am not here to "hate" on him. I just was wondering if anyone could tell what was causing him to struggle a bit offensively lately. Trust me I would much rather have JG struggle offensively because he will still be an impact defensively and rebounding. We showed last night that we can win when Justin does not play great but we can not win if our guards struggle (Charleston, Clev. State)

The absolute last thing i want them to do is lose. If i ever want them to lose my days as a KSU fan are over. I will be happy to eat crow and congratulate them and say i was dead wrong. All i'm saying is they havent put together a full 40 mins yet so how can we expect them to put it together 3 days in a row against quality teams.

Greene's had a bad ankle. Anyone who has ever tried playing basketball with a sprained ankle would know why he hasn't looked as good as we would have liked. After Friday's game, there will be time for the wounded to heal some.[/align]

You are right about the ankle. I guess sometimes we just take for granted how good he really is and anything short of great is a struggle for him. Next year we will definitely wish we still had him even if he had one leg!

Whatever happens Friday, Justin Greene will get 5 days to rest it, rehab it, do whatever the hell he needs to do to it to make it better for Thursday's opener!

The ankle is definately bothering him. He can't jump very well which is hurting his rebounding and he is having trouble getting position to make easy shots. The only thing that seems odd is all the turn overs. Maybe once he gets the ball he is out of position and trying to do things he is not very good at. I don't know but he needs to adjust and fix the third problem.

Agreed 100%. Remember Greene isn't bigger, stronger, or more athletic than the majority of guys he goes against. He has always made his money off quick post moves, spin moves, and fantastic footwork. He has scored a ton of points by attacking his defender at one side then spinning back into a hook shot or an up and under layup. Now, when he makes a spin move, he has to either pivot on the bad ankle or land on it. Trust me, on a bum ankle it's painful, difficult, and damn near impossible to do at full speed.
Just remember Greene will go down as one of the best post players in KSU history. By all accounts he's been a great ambassador in the community. Let's take it easy on him and enjoy the end of his college career. He's about the only guy that's earned a pass from the fans.
