RE: Mike Dunbar is the new OC
Does he look like Wade Phillips?

I'm fine with the hire, I think Doeren likes the more experienced play on the offense side because the's more defensive minded, which makes sense. I think PJ would have been perfect for a lot of reasons, but this works and you probably don't have to worry about him running off elsewhere if things go well.

The coaching bug has not left him yet and what is nice about the MAC is coaches really get to coach. There is probably not a a defense he hasn't seen and an offense ha has never run. I am sure if our program was a reclamation project he would have stayed retired, but he has much to work with

I don't know anything about him.

I think he was the Northwestern OC when NIU played them in 2005.

NU offense was pretty good that year with Brett Basanez at QB.

2005 NU Wildcats:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_Northw...tball_team

Our game @ NU was their second highest single game attendance for the year over #14 Wisconsin, Penn St & Iowa.

Ohio 20,115
NIU 35,114
Penn St 24,395
#14 Wisconsin 33,859
#25 Michigan 47,130
Iowa 34,550

“Mike’s run, not our terminology, but he’s run our system – just with a different language,” Doeren said. “So it’s a real simple transition I think that way for Mike when he comes in here, because when we met with him and interviewed him, there isn’t a play in our offense that he hasn’t run. It’s just been run with different words.”

Doeren said Dunbar will learn NIU’s current terminology first, but that “I want him to be able to call a game comfortably,” so some of his terms likely will be sprinkled in.

Read the rest for Doeren's comments about PJ...ouch.

Everything Doeren said regarding Fleck in that article is spot on. It's unfortunate that Doeren tried to do NIU a favor and it didn't work out. I still appreciate the effort.

He was out of football in 2009. Coached one of the worst offenses in the country in 2010. And was out of football again in 2011. Should I be worried about how much he has left in the tank?

I think Doeren's comments on the PJ thing are exactly right. Brief and to the point: unprofessional, shake your head, move on.

Or you could just chalk it up to him in charge of the O for one season at New Mexico vs...
Oregon (Went to BCS Championship)
Texas Tech (8 wins)
Utah (10 wins)
UTEP (bowl eligible)
BYU (7 wins)
SD St (9 wins)
AF (9 wins)
TCU (Went to Rose Bowl)

Though I can't make their 3 bad losses vs UNLV, NM St & Co St smell like a rose.

Lets just hope for the best since there is nothing we can do about it!

I thought he was at New Mexico State. Having a bad anything at NMSU is excusable. Imagine EMU pre-English, but worse.

I don't think he has it in him to do a project job like NMSU. But an offense that is established and has talent is a different story.

I wouldn't be surprised if his time off had to do with a combo of wanting to pick good spot and ageism by some HCs.

Right--There is nothing we can do about it but it still is worrisome. This guys wife/family must have lived in a trailer and now can make a stop in DeKalb.

RE: Mike Dunbar is the new OC
As usual, Pre-Snap Read delivers the goods:

Mike Dunbar Resurfaces at Northern Illinois

Quote:The question most N.I.U. fans have, of course, is whether Dunbar is still a viable coordinator on the F.B.S. level. His two seasons at Minnesota weren’t overly impressive, though Dunbar was handed a young roster and suffered his fair share of injuries; in addition, it wasn’t as if he was working under the most capable head coach in the country. His lone season at New Mexico State went horribly, though that’s simply par for the course in Las Cruces.

The presumption, based on the hire, is that Doeren wants to maintain the general theme of last year’s offense. Bringing in a spread-first coordinator would allow the Huskies to keep running the same plan, even if the Huskies throw the ball a bit more than they have in the recent past. It’s a safe presumption: Canada himself was a pass-heavy spread coordinator at Indiana, and he tailored his philosophy to fit Northern Illinois’ personnel.

You are correct! Imagine that the Trib misprinted something relating NIU!

RE: Mike Dunbar is the new OC
This is the perfect hire for the situation. Doeren is going to get an offer for a big payday, sooner than later. So hiring an old timer who isn't worried about his next position works well. This is Dunbar's last go I have to imagine, and I think he'll make the most of it. He's got a lot of weapons at his disposal, and has shown he knows how to use them. Considering the situation, this has turned out pretty well.

Think the only assumption one can make about PJ is he wants to be an NFL coach, as the decision he made was horrible in terms of his college coaching career. Maybe the money's better, but calling plays, and running an offense is a big opportunity at his age.

The thing about PJ is this position was probably under consideration before he accepted the NIU OC spot. Why not tell Doeren to give him a few days. Be upfron about it.

+1

If Doeren leaves in a year or two - as some of us suspect - Dunbar has the experience, credentials, and professional respect to be our next head coach, should Compher decide to go that way. Dunbar just turned 63. He could give us many years should he decide to stick around. Retirement is not mandatory at 65, you know!

dunbar is 68 i believe. Not sure why everybody has to be our next head coach. When that time comes, let the AD pick the best one available, just like he did with Coach D.
