This just in. He decided to "retire" from football. Not ready to do the recruiting thing anymore.

Let's hope DD interviewed this guys wife to make this move after a year off in semi retirement.

If she's anything like my wife, she b*tched for years that he was on the road coaching, then b*tched for months that he was f*^&ing up her routine once he retired and started hanging around the house.

She's probably the one who told him to get his *ss out and move to Dekalb.

Seriously, though, this guy has a world of experience and has put up video game numbers pretty much everywhere he's been, going back to when I was in high school.

Not bad for NIU. Experienced. Dunbar's gone traditional at times, but he's spread-based. Was an FBS OC when PJ Fleck was in grade school.

The idea that DD wants a pro-style offense just got murdered in a bath tub.

On paper, there is everything to love about this hire.

An incredible resume littered with successful stints at just about every stop. Truly the polar opposite of the PJ hire. This hire looks fantastic on paper.

I LOVE DD, but he's at it again. Look at this gem from a statement regarding the OC hiring.

"Mike is a guy that has tremendous passion for the game of football. He has coached at every level from high school to NCAA Division II, FCS, MAC and BCS programs. He's worked with guys that are playing in the NFL today and developed some very successful offenses."

WTF!

Can we get the man into a Marketing/PR training course.

EDIT: Here's the link.

Coach Doeren wanted to hire the most experienced coach he could find and this guy went to high school with Amos Alonzo Stagg. I kid! This is a great hire.

What kind of spread does he like to run? What can we expect from him?

I don't know anything about him.

I imagine whoever they brought in, the offense was going to stay the same. Don't think much will change from last year.

No danger of him taking over as HC when DD leaves, he'll be in his late 60s.

I think Dunbar runs the flying wedge offense, and has started to adopt the forward pass.
(and don't get on me about age jokes, I'm not the only one here doing this!)

I think he was the Northwestern OC when NIU played them in 2005.

NU offense was pretty good that year with Brett Basanez at QB.

He was the OC for the opposing team in Chandler's first game as a Huskie.

I heard he wants everyone to bring their Ritz to games...a few kinds of spreads that could mean

You would guess, judging by the teams he's coached, that he's a spread-to-pass guy. We've tended to be more of a spread-to-run team over the last few years.

It's a QB-friendly offense, either way.

I think what Coach Doeren means is that every level Coach Dunbar has shown that he is able to adjust the style of play based on the different styles of play at the different levels (conferences) of the team and opponents. Also he is describing how Coach Dunbar has been successful with play calling with the various "quality" talent that he has had to work with.

A guy could be awesome at coaching in the B1G but really stink at the MAC level because the B1G teams typically have the more developed players and they require less coaching. The MAC Coach may be coach of the year yet when they go up to a BCS school they are not able to handle the egos. Doeren has really liked to bring in guys that have worked at different levels (non-AQ or FCS along with BCS) and I think its a great plan.

Right now NIU is a great MAC team, even a good non-AQ team but until we whoop the lower level AQ teams every year and take down a few of the giants we have not gotten to the same level as 95% of the AQ's. I don't think Doeren likes to sugar coat things and he is using it for motivation for next year and the year after that.

BEAT IOWA!
