And living in Alabama, alot of people do refer to Alabama as UAT.
I have lived in Alabama for a total of 22 of the last 24 months and I have never heard of anyone outside of UAB fans call it that. UAB fans do it out of spite because of their poor treatment by the powers at be, sound familiar?

Auburn fans refer to Bama as UAT also.

As far as the ULL thing, you guys still have to seperate yourself from ULM as well as the big boy in the state, LSU. At least you aren't directional school U anymore. I just now started calling you guys ULL.

That's a step in the right direction. We should be moving head and shoulders past ULM in the upcoming years...winning the New Orleans Bowl was step one.

There has been recent legislation that went into effect that designates La Tech, UNO and Louisiana as statewide universities. The rest are regional schools, it is a step in the right direction, but a long way to go.

For the most part we are in the same boat as UAB, the flagship and ULS member schools do not want us to reach our full potential athletically because we are the only school that can rise above the rest and be a true thorn in LSU's side. There is a lot less resistance by LSU as of late due to their extreme dominance in football since around 2000.

But everyone else in the state can see that we are taking off, 29K average attendance, 40,000 fans at the NOLA bowl (i'll be very generous and give SDSU 3000) and a rapidly growing athletic foundation. We are poised to really take off if we take advantage of it.

Irrelevant to this conversation. University of Alabama isn't "University of Alabama-Tuscaloosa". They are simply "University of Alabama" and happen to be located in Tuscaloosa. "UAT" is ALWAYS used in a derogatory manner because it isn't the university's name.

My comment was in response to someone elses comment, and it is mostly the barners that call Bama, UAT.

-----------This is an ex post facto request after a horrible injustice to UL because of people (this board included) that refuse to allow the ambiguity to go away-----If all on this board and conference officials would just refer to us as UL or Louisiana there is NO PROBLEM----A request because of a major embarrassment is not shoving anything down anybody's throat!!! This is yet another reason for the members of this board to from now on refer to our school as UL or Louisiana!!!

This conversation has nothing to do with ULM, but since you asked football APR for this last season will be among the best in the nation, around a 979 or 980 according to a story in the paper up here a few weeks ago, thanks for asking.

How come your ULL folks can't ever carry on a conversation about your school without having to bring up ULM? It's a simple question that I'm sure will get a lot of hate spewed back at it.

Like a poster from YOUR school said...if you wouldn't be so abrasive about your request to be called whatever it is you want to be called, you might see some better results.

Can you give us a link? The president of the University of Louisiana System, Randy Moffett, said just LAST WEEK that "The addition of University of New Orleans compliments our eight REGIONAL comprehensive research universities truly making the UL System now nine universities strong". The main advantagae for UNO in joining the UL System is they will "no longer have to compete with a flagship school (LSU) that receives a disproportionate share of attention and resources" says the article.

ULL, La Tech, and UNO, according to the system president, are REGIONAL comprehensive research institutions as members of the University of Louisiana System.

One thing I don't understand is the wide range of names for the UL system institutions. All the LSU system institutions are LSU something w/ Baton Rouge being the flagship university. That's the way it is in Arkansas. UofA has Fayetteville, Fort Smith, Little Rock, Monticello, Medical Sciences, plus some community colleges, with Fayetteville being the flagship. The Arkansas State system has Jonesboro, Mountain home, Heber Springs, Newport, Paragould, Marked Tree, and Beebe w/ Jonesboro being the flagship. They are all called ASU-(city) or UA(city). That's the same deal w/ UC-Berkley. They are officially designated as the flagship, so they get to just go by Cal. It would be nice if ULL could get designated as the flagship university, but there would probably be too much opposition against it.

--------------------------

Probably best and simplest way to explain is that Louisiana, in an effort to make a college education available to all, established schools at just about every crossroads in addition to LSU. Eight of these (USL, McNeese, La Tech, NE La, NW La, SE La, Grambling, and Nichols State) operated under one system. Their supervisory board allowed USL to change its name to the University of Louisiana without any clearance through the other boards or legislature. Well, you know what hit the fan and the matter was finally settled by the state legislature who by statute created the University of Louisiana System. They stripped U of La of its recently board awarded name and placed all eight of those schools in the system under their existing names. Then, to satisfy those who wanted to be identified as University of Louisiana they allowed any or all of the eight to change their name EXCEPT they would have to agree to identify by city name. Thus, University of Louisiana at Lafayette and University of Louisiana at Monroe were born. The others elected to retain their current name at the time and still do so up until today. All others, however, have the right to designate themselves as The University of Louisiana in the future but must attach the city name. The legislature specified in law that there was no one flagship in the system. U of New Orleans was recently merged into this system and elected to retain their present name. Two decided to change, others kept theirs as is but its heard that SE La will become U of La at Hammond in very near future.

This will go into effect for the 2012 FY, so here is your link. Please refer to the bottom of the first page for the breakdown of all universities.
Flagship: LSU
Statewide: Louisiana, La Tech and UNO
Regional: Grambling, ULM, SLU, Nichols, NWST, SUNO, Southern, LSU-A, LSU-S

By the way, I know it will never happen, but for the sake of higher ed in Louisiana their should only be 4 public universities in the state and the rest should be JUCO's.

First, I was responding to the comment that "there has been recent legislation that designates UNO, ULL, La Tech to be statewide universities" and asked for a link. Your response DOES not refer to any LEGISLATION, only some guidelines drawn up by the Board of Regentsl who CANNOT legislate. I would still like to see the link and if there is in fact one that does that then man I stand corrected and will apologize.

Secondly that criteria was obviously drawn up prior to beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, two years ago. UNO has now been brought into the system and your President is referring to all of you now as regional comprehensive universities, no partiality drawn between any of the nine in the current system.
