The East Carolina Boxer Syndrome
As a 20 year fan, I can't stand it anymore. ECU is like the boxer that goes in and wins the first 8 rounds of a 15 round fight and then sits back the last 7 rounds until the other guy gets one lucky punch in the 14th and wins the fight by KO. There is a distinct difference between playing to win and playing not lose. It seems for a portion of the Steve Logan years, all the Skip Holtz years and so far in two years with Ruffin McNeill, the Pirates have played the latter just like the boxer who thinks he's got the majority decision. We did again tonite against UTEP. The Miners gave ECU every opportunity to win the game and for a Miner team that manages to give up over 450 yards per game, the Pirates managed just at 250. You're playing to get one game closer to a bowl and lose like that. WTF.

RE: The East Carolina Boxer Syndrome
I am not sure how people are thinking that we are suffering from being a young team and not having the right players for the offense. Receivers should know how to run routes and make catches. It has nothing to do with not having the right players. Youth is an excuse. We had nothing but freshman and sophomores last year that are now sophomores and Juniors this year. Guys making hand and arm tackles is a result of lack of coaching/discipline.

I have noticed that our Running backs are smaller (180lbs), our offensive and defensive lines are smaller too. If people remember, this is exactly the sized players JT recruited. How is a 250 lb. offensive lineman going to block out a 310lb defensive lineman? How is a 260lb defensive lineman going to push around a 300lb offensive lineman. To me this offense is a disaster. TT never really ever excelled into the upper echelon of the Big 12. They were never really in contention for a Big 12 title or BCS bowl. They did this for 10 years and got to beat Texas one year. I don't think this style of offense is good for us. When UTEP's horrid D can shut down our offense and Budd Foster can out coach our whole staff, then we are in trouble. I saw the same signs with JT.

I can't really disagree with the rest of your post, but this is just not true, especially on offense.

From our depth chart for UCF:

Offense
5 Freshmen
14 Sophomores
2 Juniors
6 Seniors

Defense
5 Freshmen
5 Sophomores
7 Juniors
5 Seniors

Our defense has almost half as many freshmen and sophomores starting as the offense, and is the stronger unit this year. That should tell us something. Eight of the freshmen and sophomores are on the O-Line, the group that has struggled the most.

We are young where it counts this year, and our senior quarterback can't seem to get out of his own way.

Ruff will get a third year, but next year he will have to prove he can win here or he may not make it to year four, IMHO.

I follow you. I am all for Ruff getting a third year, but if he can't win then he has to go. At the end of this year, they need to get rid some coaches if we are to see any improvement.

Well everyone wanted to fire Brian Mitchell last year and what happened.... he changed schemes over the summer and we have improved mightily on defense this year.

Not sure what has been the offense's demise this year unless Dwayne Harris really meant that much overall. I do think that somehow the offensive plays/play calling/schemes need to be evaluated because it seems we are too "predictable" somehow.... I wonder how much there really is to other teams knowing our signals. I think that is a big thing that needs to be addressed.

The defense is better, but the poor tackling is still really bad. The offense like you said has become too predictable. Whoever the special teams coach is should be the first on the hot seat.

Overall, I thought I would like the air raid, but now having tasted it for 2 years I don't like it anymore. Even if it got as good as it was under Leach. You have to make sacrifices to the team in other areas, primarily playing undersized lineman on both sides of the ball, including the running backs. You have to recruit so many receivers that it takes away from the amount of defenders you can recruit.
