Wonder how long it took the OP to come up with this fanstastical theory, only to have you completely obliterate it in 2 short sentences.....
Cap. This article may not be based upon sound research..but..I would submit that the fantastical theory would be one that assumes that the current BCS members would ever allow a mass entrance of 22 teams into it's club. That is just not going to happen. The BE will get extension after extension if necessary in order to keep its AQ status. The BCS makes its own rules. There is NOTHING CUSA/MWC can do about it. The BCS is a rigged game and THEY get to decide who plays.
I'm not disagreeing with you - just know 100% that nothing will be decided over Sagarin ratings from the 1st ~5 games of this season....
...although....adding one extra BCS game and offering a bid to this conglomeration's "champion" might be a good deal for the BCS - if for no other reason than it would effectively shut up "the rest" of the relevant non-AQ's from any bitching and moaning over the BCS....
...and let's be honest, the "one" that emerges from the merger is going to be a pretty damn good team each season.....a small piece of the pie for the ~20 or so in the CONFUSA-MWAC may be well worth it for the "greater good" of the country club.....?????
For clarity...I am not against the "Alliance". In fact...I applaud the concept and if it can garner a BCS bowl bid for the champion..then I support it. That is at least better than what we currently have.

RE: Big East vs. Merger comarison
The funny thing about all of this is that it's very fluid.
Houston, SMU, and UCF are in an up-swing right now. Same could be said of ECU. All of them, however, had some pretty bad years not all that long ago.
Conversely, Memphis and UAB who are currently struggling were no where near this weak just a few years ago. In 2004, UAB was at one point in the BCS Top 25 and had a bowl appearance. Memphis had several bowl appearances over several years.
Both Memphis and UAB can and will be back. Houston, SMU, and UCF are solid right now, but there's no guarantee that they will remain at that level. As I said, these things fluctuate.

The Alliance isn't for AQ status it's to improve TV, bolster the winner's buster credentials and that's it.

Therein lies the flaw in your thinking. Would you jump out of an 8-story window for a million dollars? Everything has a point of diminishing returns.
So what you are saying is that joining the Big East is like jumping out of an eight story window which would be suicide, so that you could collect a check that you couldn't collect because you are dead?
Staying in CUSA is like sitting in a 5x5 cell where you will never be able to escape. You will always be relegated to mediocrity.

OK. Let's make it more interesting. How about a 5-story window? That's survivable. You'll probably end up severely injured, but you get the money, so you have to do it, right?
My point is simply that there's a limit to what anyone (Boise State in this case) is willing to do for a check.
More power to UCF and ECU if they think they can anchor a major conference if it came down to it, but good luck convincing Boise that such a conference would be worth what they'd have to sacrifice in order to join it.

The author obviously misunderstands that the reason Boise State (or Air Force or Houston or SMU for that matter) might turn down a Big East invitation has nothing to do with Sagarin ratings.
And you're not getting that the reason we (UH at least) has nothing to do with them either

I stopped reading when you called Boise State a "consistent top-10 team." They've only finished in the top 10 a grand total of three times in their entire history.
