RE: DMN's Chuck Carlton has WVU as rumored 14th SEC member
If WVU leaves The BEast, the Mountaineers take a lot of the conference's football reputation with it...

I don't think the SEC would be a good home for WVU, considering the currently unknown potency our team may or may not possess. We might be able to escalate to success, or end up like Marshall when they moved to C-USA. [I know there are better examples, but that one came to mind first.]

Miami to the ACC comes to mind.

I hope the Big East stays together. If we can't though I hope Syracuse and UConn stick together.

I would imagine if the ACC takes any BE teams outside of WVU, they would look to Rutgers, UCONN and Syracuse.
Honestly I don't think Rutgers figures into anyone's expansion plans. If the whole thing blows up I'd be shocked if we weren't on the outside looking in. If things really go awry my hope would be for the Big East football schools that remain (likely UConn, Rutgers, Cincy, USF and TCU) to invite Temple, UMass, ECU and UCF for 9/16 configuration. (Houston ends up in the Big 12 in my thinking.)
If the league blew up, do you really think the hoops schools would stick around to play any of those schools not named UConn? Take the 7 or 8 non football schools (depending on Notre Dame), add Xavier and Dayton, and other private schools (some mix of St.Louis, Creighton, Duquesne, Fordham, LaSalle, St.Joe's, Butler), and you have a Top 5 hoops league.

Well to avoid being Marshal you want to not be caught with violations and not be in a decline going in. That really doesn't help your chances.

If WVU left, Pitt would start burning up the phone lines to their contacts in the ACC.
ADs everywhere are running to Wal Mart to buy track phones to try to arrange behind the scenes deals. Your analogy is right on.
See any Univ Official "throwing these phones in a garbage can?"
Mean AD's and/or even Univ Presidents might knowingly break open sunshine laws if it meant that their school could be guaranteed future membership for generations to come in one of the selected few Multi-Billion $$$$ BCS Conf?
Ya don't say?
