PS Huskie Stadium "capacity" is 24,000 or 25,500 depending on who you ask in athletics. Largest crowd ever was 28,221. We currently can not fit 31k people in the stadium. 31K was possible with the old setup when the bleachers were in the North (and maybe South) endzones along with the current east and west stands as they are now. I have asked for this to be changed in the NIU literature for statistical reasons but have not gotten any results.
I considered the same thing; that maybe Wisconsin was going to back out but offering to do the game at SF kept them interested. Regarding attendance, I suspected the capacity was closer to around 28,000 but I wanted to stick with "officially reported" numbers in case there really was some way to substantially increase capacity for games with an anticipated high turnout.

The engineered safe capacity is 25,500 however engineers and architects make things with a lower and upper safe limit. This upper maximum occupancy for the east and west stadium seating is about 28,000. This does not count the suites as this has its own capacity limitations. This is how we get the 28,221 for the highest ever attended game at Huskie Stadium. I do not know if "visitor" side line passes also count towards attendance as these are not paid tickets... or are they?

Do they do it just by paid tickets, or do they include verified admissions into the stadium? For example, if there was a sell out, would they include the visiting marching band (I'm not sure if the visitors buy their band's seats or if there's a different system for that). From what I remember of the north and south end zone bleachers, they didn't seem like they could accommodate 3,000 fans (and I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but I think they were empty during the 2003 Maryland game, which I think was called a sellout). But either way, it seems that the total capacity of Huskie Stadium is may be more of a subjective count than an objective number.

The visiting band does count toward attendance... if they come. I don't remember a visiting band at Huskie Stadium before.

When I started at NIU in 99 the North bleachers were still standing but not used by the public. I do not remember bleachers in the South end zone. Occasionally some people with sideline passes used the first rows on the North side but it was rare. Some time before the 2003 season they covered the bleachers with a canvas type tarp with new NIU logo. The bleachers were not used for any of the record setting games.

Attendence to the Maryland game and any game before that is not 100% accurate. Up until the Iowa State game in 2003 NIU students didn't need a ticket to get in and just swiped their "One Card". While this was the same as a ticket some of the low paid people were not that concerned with swiping the ID cards. As there was a huge crowd rushing to get in a few minuets before kickoff many people (including myself) entered without having their card swiped. I just had to show my NIU ID and they let me in. So really I do think that the Maryland game is the true record holder but we will never know exactly how high the attendance really was. However I am sure it was not 31k.

There is an engineered capacity and a fire martial allowed capacity. The later is the number that MUST not be exceeded. Like I said before the engineers always play it safe with the numbers and the fire martial is the law.

Ohio brought their band in 2003 and Navy brought their band in 2008. There probably have been others, but I'm drawing a blank right now.

I got the part about the South bleachers from this seating chart:
which appears to represent south bleachers (or I suppose it could just represent some sort of seating for the area beneath the scoreboard). But I agree that it doesn't seem like the 31,000 figure came from objective data. Perhaps athletics has already issued a correction, but it's taking a while for certain sources to also update those values.

My son started at NIU in 99 - was in the marching band. Each year the band had a "band trip" to an away game. It was usually to Toledo. I'm pretty sure other schools have brought their bands to DeKalb during the past 10 years or so as their "band trip".
HuskieJohn, do you work in athletics at NIU? How great to be able to have a job at your alma mater!

Yes a few people commented about various bands coming to NIU. I seem to remember the Ohio band now as I felt like they were encroaching on our territory.

As for me I an just Alum & Huskie football fan. Most of this information is on the athletic website it is just hard to find since they just keep adding on top of it. I did technically work for athletics in the 04 season as I drove one of the "Huskie Express II" train looking trams. However that year I did not get to enjoy the tailgating or games as much since I was working before and after every one.

ND is back with Kelley.
No longer will Irish remain ND in name only.
Book it.

They did afterall finally beat USC and I am in no way, shape or form a Notre Dame fan.

Much anticipated by many, much more so than warranted.
Like so many movie reviews, it's of interest but overated.

Can you say Billy Lowe and a cast of others who fall short of the hype?

How about awaiting a Walk on Day for guys like Spann?

Unheralded players less entitled are often the backbone of teams.

Oh, how I miss the Ohio band. When they last visited Huskie Stadium, some of our fans booed them at halftime. When the band left the field, they got a standing ovation. I have never, ever heard a better band (and I used to attend a Big 10 school and saw all the Big 10 bands). After the game, I wrote to the Ohio band leader and told him how fabulous the band was and how much we enjoyed the performance. He posted my letter on the band's bulletin board and sent me a nice e-mail back. If the band has the same talent, I would love to seem them come back to Huskie Stadium the next time the Bobcats come to town.

You have a much better memory than I.

I was even in the front row on the east side dog pound and I have less than a chicken fart of a memory of this happening.

I remember the Ohio band playing and the people I was with liked them better than our band. I thought they were pretty good, but I'm not usually impressed by marching bands so I didn't think much of it.

If you cannot recall the performance by Ohio 100 your cells are in much worse shape than are mine at age 66 or it simply was not of much importance to you.

They were awesome and the best musical and marching show ever presented on Brigham Field bar none - unless considering the summer drum and bugle corps fleeing for their lives when Huskie football team took the practice field.

Only thing as equally impressive was UW band in Rose Bowl but in a very different style than Ohio.
Bobcats R O C K E D the House like no other and they raised the bar very high!

And how about the game? Amazing Huskie comeback to beat OU in 2003. Fleck was so unbelievable he was named USA Today National Player of the Week. I was pissed at the Ohio band, mostly because NIU was losing at the half. But it was a damned good marching band.

Ya I still don't pay attention to the bands other than when they are in the stands. I think for me as a student it was just more of a lack of interest in NIUs band. The half time shows always seemed to be for all the older alums. The band did not do anything that the students ever cared about or flashy enough to at least watch. A Beatles song here an 80s rock song there and then Beach Boys for the finally... 03-zzz oh hay half time is over time to wake up.
