Don't I recall that the year we went to the NCAA
and beat Notre Dame, we got off to a slow start, but finished strong? I'm sure a few of you guys who were around before me can recall where we stood after 10-15 games. Seems like we had lost quite a few games, but then started to jell and had probably our greatest season.
Who know. Maybe we'll do that this year.

I don't think our season record was that great. Seems like we might have been something like 20-11? I'll try and look it up in our press guide.
I looked it up. We were 20-11. That's not a fantastic record, but the reason we remember it so fondly is that we went to the NCAA and beat Notre Dame. 20-11 is certainly within reach this year. But we'd have to get to the NCAA and win a game to equal that year.

RE: Don't I recall that the year we went to the NCAA
We started the season 4-9 and went on a heck of a win streak and ended up 23-11 counting the 2 NCAA games. However, that team had future NBA players Pete Myers and Myron Jackson as well as Michael Clarke and Ken Worthy who played with Myers since middle school in Moblie. Another interesting point, I don't think we've had HS teammates since Mark Greene and Alex Finger. We've had a couple of Juco teammates, Thornton and Davison and maybe another pair, my memory is full of Turkey and dressing at the moment!

The press guide shows 20-10 that season. I don't think it included the Notre Dame victory.

The press guide I'm looking at for '85-'86 shows a record of 23-11. They started out 4-9, then went 19-2 for the remainder of the year.
Newell never had a 20-11 season.
Some Trojan Trivia
Paul Springer became the starter at point guard when the 19-2 run began.
The Newell Era
84-'85 17-13
'85-'86 23-11 including the NCAA tournament.
'86-'87 26-11
'87-'88 24-7
'88-'89 23-8
'89-'90 20-10

I thought the 89-90 team was the one we were talking about. I have to go back and check that out. Maybe we went to the NCAA more than once in that time and I assumed that was the year we beat Notre Dame.
My bad if I got the wrong years.

My goodness. We went to the NCAA three times and the NIT twice in a five year span under Newell. Wow. I didn't realize we were that good.
I didn't get involved in the program until maybe Newell's last one or two seasons. I guess that's why I wasn't as familiar with the success as I could have been. When you look at that record, you can really understand LRTrojan's being upset that Mike Newell isn't in our Hall of Fame. Five straight seasons in postseason tournaments, and we've only been once since, in Fish's senior season. Unbelievable. How did this happen. And with no facilities to speak of. And now we have great facilities and we can't seem to accomplish anything more than a few division championships which equate to third or fourth place in the league. I think we have a legitimate right to expect better.

We've talked about this a million times over. Taking nothing away from Newell- we were in one of the weakest conferences in the country. Every time he won the tournament he did it on his home court. We could have continued to dominate the TAAC, but decided to move to a better conference. Mr. M. was for it, but asked me at the time "When are we going to go to the NCAA's again". Mr. M is still glad we moved conferences and so am I. I'd rather see better quality basketball game in and game out. Apparently you'd rather we dominated a bad conference- that's fine, I just don't agree. GaSouthern was the other dominate team in the TAAC- I don't recall them making the NCAA since they left. C of Charleston went to the NCAA's regularly from the ASun (TAAC)- I don't think they've been since they left in 1999. And they have a new 45 million dollar arena, but played in a gym comparable to our fieldhouse when they were dominating the ASun. Its disappointing that we haven't made the NCAA's in 20 years, but certainly not unbelievable.
When we moved to a better conference, I would expect we would recruit to the level of that conference. I wouldn't want to be in a lesser conference, but I don't think a tournament appearance every few years in whatever conference we're in would be a totally unrealistic expectation.

I sorta guessed you'd find a way to down grade Newell. He doesn't want to give Newell credit for anything positive. I guess he thinks that it would make his buddy Shields look worse.
While the Sun Belt is a somewhat better conference(not by much this season)than the TAAC was, Newell did manage to win several games against some big name programs. Not bad for a "decent coach" in a weak conference, with terrible facilities. Newell did get us some nationwide publicity. Shields can't even get regular press in the Democrap paper.
Kinda looks like Mickey feels the same way about Newell that he does about the hogs. Is he on the Hall of Fame committee?

Well it's hard to downplay five straight post season appearances, no matter what league you're in. Especially considering what has transpired since then. I think MJS has always been more focused on Newell's alleged financial blunders, which caused the program to be nearly shut down, rather than his success on the court. But hey. We all see what we want to see. I'm trying to concentrate on here and now, and we need to bring this program back to where we're making post season appearances on a regular basis. I don't care who does it, or how it's done, as long as it's legal. I'm tired of our teams sitting home every year while other programs are getting all the glory.

I have nothing against Mike personally, at all. I probably knew him quite a bit better than I know Coach Shields. When Mike came here we had a few dozen "fans" and I was one of those. He put me on a committee with a bunch of movers and shakers- never understood how that happened being a just out of school psychologist making 19K working for the State. I talked to him a lot. My wife and I probably spent 2 hours drinking beers with him after a game in Shreveport. He was always friendly to my wife and young son. Yes, he is the best coach we ever had here. I still judge someone by their whole body of work. Steve has done more than anyone since Newell. I just don't understand your animosity toward him since no one else since Newell has made the NCAA tournament either.

I liked Wimp as well (I guess I like all our coaches- while they are here anyway). But Wimp had the most talent we ever had- 2 NBA players (Fish and Joe Stephens), #1 pick in the CBA draft (Muntrelle), a guy who's been doing well overseas for over ten years (Malik), etc.- and couldn't win the league championship despite having the tournament on his home court 3 years in a row. Now that's something to ***** about.

I'm talking about the whole body of work, as you described was the criteria. There were Final Fours Sweet 16's and everything..!

Some of you guys don't understand. I really have no animosity toward Coach Shields. I personally like him. Who doesn't? I think he's a fine man. He hasn't done badly here. I simply want a coaching change. I've praised defensive coaching ability. I think we can do better recruiting and at the gate. I want to have the opportunity to be proud of our program again. Six years is plenty long enough for a coach to make it to post season in some post season tournament. If he can't do it in six years, or at least make it to the finals, then I'm ready to try someone else.
