Luke Fickell Named National Assistant Coach of the Year

The criteria for the award is not limited to on-field coaching ability or the success of the team and players that these assistant coaches work with. Service to the community through charitable work and other volunteer activities, participation in AFCA activities and events, participation in other professional organizations and impact on student-athletes are all taken into account in the selection process.

So in other words, he still may not be worthy of consideration.

I would like to see Jarvis become the football version of Armon Gates. I'm sure he could get a good graduate assistantship at KSU.

Four assistants to stay for now... McManus, Rektis, Flemming, and Baker.

Sounds like Pete Rekstis is the choice of several players:

RE: New Coach.....
Mcmanus is the interim head coach.

Clearly, if Martin had not resigned, he would not have been offered a new contract. A FBS proram has to "move on' when the head coach never had a winning season. BUT, and especially after hearing what Linder had to say yesterday, expecially about in-conference wins, Martin did the best overall job of any coach since the "glory days" of the 70's ended after the 1977 season, with the exception of Glen Mason. And, since Mason only coached two years here and clearly was looking to move up as soon as possible (nothing wrong with that), we will never know how well he would have recruited long-term. So, putting aside all the positive intangibles Martin brought, if we want to talk about what the heck has been wrong with Kent State football over the last 30+ years, Martin is way down the list of people at whom to point fingers.

The next hire is crucial, beyond crucial. They better get it right.

Agree. But Coach Holtz has it right. There are no two people that I’d rather have making the choice than Joel Neilsen and Tom Kleinlein. Heck, if TK wanted to be a coach, I might name him.

The inmates don't run the asylum. He may get the job, but it will not be because the players want that to happen.

Even though it will never happen, imagine if we got Shannon. Great recruiting in Florida? Ya I guess that sounds OK.

RE: New Coach.....
Steed Lobotzke's team went 3-9... not exactly the coach i want to be my head coach.. just saying not a terrible coach by any means but just dont trust him to run a program yet. and Luke Fickell only won that award for his community service not solely for his coaching ability. I know people think Pete Rekstis will get the job because he was remotely successful, and the players like him. unfortunately the players do not run the program. The head coach must have a name that will register with big name boosters to raise money for the program. There is alot that goes into being a successful head coach besides coach ability. None of these coaches previously named have any experience with being a head coach. Only Andre Patterson has been a head coach before in his career, and as far as i can tell was a good quality head coach. I hop they hire the right guy for the job.... I personally still think thats Andre Patterson.. but we will see as this process goes on.

Watch this video of Andre Patterson, he sounds very knowledgeable

Thanks for clarifying.

Well, we can always go after Jon Gruden. I think we will have as much success as the Hurricanes.

Well, theWJ, if we're going to go the fantasy route, I vote for Anna Kournikova.

I think Coach Rekstis would be a good selection, but I would be really surprised if AD Neilsen will stay in house for his choice.

RE: New Coach.....
I was thinking about the Bama game next year and got to thinking about reasons Bama agreed to it. The scheduling change happened halfway through the season after the 2-4 start. So is it possible that making someone on Bama's staff the next coach here was part of the deal?

RE: New Coach.....
I doubt that is is that well planned out, but I'd almost certainly bet that when Sabin, Holtz, and/or Pinkel were asked for advice, the first thing they told KSU was that salaries for the head coach and staff all have to be dramatically increased to be able to attract the best candidates. That 'Bama turns around and offers us $1.2 mil. may just be more like "Now take this and do something good for KSU football with it."

RE: New Coach.....
potential coaching candidates from the Bilo College Football report...
http://bilofootball.blogspot.com/2010/11...dates.html

Kent State
Wisconsin OC Paul Chryst...Deep in the midwest recruiting circles
Oklahoma State OC Dana Holgorsen...innovative and creative offensively
Penn State WR Coach Mike McQueary...no cordinator or HC experience
Notre Dame Secondary Coach Chuck Martin...A popular name early, great recruiter, no real experience running the show
UTEP DC Andre Patterson...has had other opportunities, not a good record.
Michigan State OC Don Treadwell...Good choice, and he is ready. Knows the midwest.

Tough job to sell. There has to be total commitment from the Kent State community to get this thing right. The Flashes were a winner last in 1984 under Glen Mason (7-4) and have not gone bowling since Don James took them in 1972. My favorites here are Holgorsen and Treadwell.
