There is a HUGE difference between thinking NIU "is not worthy", and NIU "won't get the job done". I think DogFan is in the latter school of thought (just like me). I would LOVE to see NIU in a position to make a huge splash like trying to get into the big-12, but it has been proven time and again, that NIU does not have the know-how or the want to grow the program beyond "just average". So, here we sit, jaded at the thought of going "to the promised land"...because we know the people in charge would not put the effort in to do something like this.

Toledo is holding out for the TOLEDO network. Plus they want $25 mill per yr. The major conferences can't wait to get that average attd of 25,000 into their league
I also heard that for perception reasons they are going to change their name to the THE Ohio State University at Toledo.

People may not agree, but people I have talked to who know about this stuff, say that bugdet equality of the schools you want to be part of is all important. We cannot ever get to a 30mill budget.

If our stadium held 40k we could get any bcs team to come to dekalb. Tickets would be 40-50 dollars. We could pay the visiting team and pocket a million bucks. I think we could have 2-3 games like that each season. We pay that for bcs road games. The first mac team to do that will be able to move to a better conference.
If you have a Soldier Field game, you'd make enough money to pay for the BCS team to come to DeKalb. Just need to close off the South End at HS and make it a horseshoe to make it big enough to have BCS teams come in regularly.

-The Big 10 adds Nebraska and no one else to go to 12 teams.
-The PAC 10 adds Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Colorado.
-The following Big 12 teams are now orphans: Iowa State, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Baylor.
The new NTFFTMRC now consists of:
Iowa State
Northern Illinois
Missouri
Kansas
Kansas State
Memphis
Baylor
SMU
Houston
Nine teams allows 8 conference and 4 nonconference games. I believe all of these schools are in the central time zone. This would be a great hoops conference with Iowa State, Kansas and Memphis and would tap into the Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Memphis, Dallas and Houston markets. Pretty powerful. Oh, and Ames.
Super idea!
And to save travel costs, all teams can travel by paddleboat up and down the mighty Mississippi while singing rousing choruses of Ole Man River or Proud Mary!
These teams would actually make for a nice conference, the problem is Missouri may join the Southeast, maybe BYU would join or Toledo.NIU needs to get out of the MAC,it has no national following,it will always be the BIG10's little kid brother.

FWIW,....the south end zone could easily be built up and over the existing Huskie drive.
I would believe they already have preliminary concepts available to them.

Not to mention we'd sell out every home conference game. The additional revenue per year would make it easy to increase our budget. We'd never be near Texas or Oklahoma but catching up to Iowa State wouldn't be hard.
I still think we have no chance of getting in, but the idea that it's our budget holding us back doesn't make sense to me.
I've had conversations with people who know about this stuff and it is about budgets. If we want to go into the big 12, we need to expand the stadium to at least 50,000 and the overall budget to about $30 mill. Where do we get that when the school might have to borrow to pay its bills. It is never going to happen. We should try to make the MAC the best we can
Even your in the know people would realize that most of the revenue could be made up from TV and increased gate revenues. Iowa State does not raise $30m on ist own. Most of it is handed to them.

There ya go, people on this board love the thought of higher ticket prices. Huskie nation has really stepped up and embraced the SF ticket prices. We can't even sell out the place with the BOGOs available to students and their familes.
When it comes down to it the MAC is a great fit for NIU. If the MAC could somehow get their students and alums to value the high quality football that is played on MAC campuses each and every fall the conference could become something special.

I think it will be a collecting ground for some of the mid majors/lower end majors.
Most Big 12 schools hate Texas for their arrogance..(.note that the conference championship is always held in Texas)...Nebraska could not wait to get out of the Big 12....if OK goes and A & M goes the Big 12 will fold up....
Now how about the MAC getting some western schools to come in for football only such as MO Iowa State or K State? Just a thought
