I have a son on campus, and I am very concerned. It isn't legal for the students on campus to arm themselves. They are sitting ducks.

Not on the campus anymore but got a friend there. Heard there was 9 armed robbers this semester alone. After that couple who was kidnapped from the apartments on highland(also shot and the female was gang raped by 4 guys) I left the school. Would love to return all they have to do is allow permit holders to carry guns on campus. Students are easy prey because the low life scum crooks know they arn't packing.

That wasn't on campus. That was off of Highland and south of the railroad tracks. No student goes over there to begin with. And there is no need for anyone to have a gun on campus. That is just over doing it and everyone knows that. I spent 4 years at the UofM and never had one problem. Some people like to sensationlize things.

No, it was the goodman/spottswood area.

I thought that crime was in the newer apartments on the Highland strip itself? Just clarifying. But I forget the name of that new building. I'm fairly sure that's where that couple lived.

No, that happened at the Stratum at Highland and Mynders. The young couple was kidnapped in the parking garage there and they were driven to a field in South Memphis. The girl was brutally gang raped and the guy was shot. They were both left for dead, but somehow made it to a hospital.

Well, nevermind. I was thinking of something else.

one of the home invasions in the university area last thursday ended with an arrest as well...the guy stole the lady's car and police chased him into our neighborhood, where he crashed the car & was apprehended.

I understand that, but the majority of robberies were within two blocks of my house.

There's been so much crime in the area over the years it is hard to keep things straight.

Oh, okay. You are talking about the recent robbery attempts. FORealTigerFan was referring to the kidnapping and brutal rape from last year (I think).

I seem to remember a high-profile gang rape/murder of a UT couple in Knoxville a couple of years ago - it's a tragic reality of our society and is not just in Memphis.

RE: This crime on or around campus is disgusting
(10-15-2009 03:58 PM)presskh Wrote:  All cities have problems with crime. I frequently travel to Houston on business and, believe me, Memphis has nothing on that city. I live halfway between Nashville and Birmingham and frequent both of them and I would say that Memphis is no worse than either. Atlanta is no piece of cake either, nor is Chicago, Philadelphia, or Los Angeles (don't even mention Detroit) - the list goes on and on.

I was back in Memphis at the end of May and drove around the city to see for myself the state of the city - some areas have indeed gone down relative to when I lived there in the late 70's to early 80's but others seem to have actually improved (downtown for sure). The main campus is nicer than ever and still seems to be surrounded by good neighborhoods, although Park Avenue several blocks south of campus has gone down. The area around the Liberty Bowl looks pretty rough, but it was rough when I lived there - I hear they are planning some revitalization in that area. I've traveled to many cities (US and Europe) on business and you have to keep your wits about you in every one of them and just don't do "dumb" things. When you live around a city for a long time, you tend to hear all the local news reports about crime and think that particular city must be the world's worst, when in fact, it's the same pretty much everywhere. Don't unfairly label Memphis until you have had a chance to travel to other cities and see what goes on there.

There is definitely a larger crime concern when attending urban universities such as Memphis, Louisville, Cincinnati, or Houston, compared with small-town schools such as Auburn, Ole Miss, or Mississippi State, where the school pretty much is the whole town - however, I personally like the urban atmosphere and the outside-school activities available in a larger city like Memphis.

Here, here! Good points all around. In the words of the pulpit minister I work with, "I like living in the country because cows don't try to hurt people. People try to hurt people." Personally I love big cities and don't ever want to live too far away from them. Usually the bigger the city the more higher rate of crime. Why? Because people do stupid things and the more people the higher the likelihood of one of those idiots do something stupid, color doesn't matter. Poverty tends to have an effect but as I have been told recently, Mountain Brook in Birmingham (which is a super rich suburb) has a higher crime rate than UAB area (which is Southside downtown). Oddly enough, the most dangerous cities I have been to don't have anything to do with the "race" of a person...Amsterdam for one, Rome, and Athens. I think the most dangerous city that I have been to would be Tegucigalpa, Honduras. There you have 2 1/2 million desperate and poverty stricken individuals who are fighting to stay alive...and some of them don't have ethics. Once again, it's that whole "likelihood of idiots" thing I was talking about.

That story about the stratum just makes me sick to my stomach. It's a shame that the question of whether or not students should be able to carry weapons is even up for debate. This town needs a hero. We are like Gotham City, but without Batman.

Doesn't seem to be working yet.

Some people like to sensationlize things.

tell that to the folks at Va Tech...one armed student (with a permit of course) could have stopped that whole thing.

if you're a thug (someone with the intent to harm)...a college is the perfect place...no one can be armed and the campus police are more interested in writing tickets to boost revenue.

remember, when seconds count...the police will be there in 2-5 minutes...maybe.

Go Tigers!!!

Or he/she could have made the situation worse. The movies always show the heroes. Heroes don't always materialize in real life. If someone is waving a gun around, he already has the advantage on someone who has to reach for one.

Good Lord. The UofM campus is not the wild west. I have no problems with people carrying guns wherever they please but we're talking about a boxed in campus. How in the hell I'm I supposed to know if dumb*** next to me put the safety on. Crime ON campus hardly ever happens like some people on here are making it out to be. I spent many late nights on campus going from the library to the computer lab in Smith Hall and never once did I feel afraid. If you want to carry guns off the campus, fine with me.
