And it doesn't particuarly matter whether the name recognition is a result of football or basketball. Works the same way in elections. People tend to vote for names they have heard before, regardless of whether they know anything about them whatsoever. It's dumb, but that's people for you.

Disagree with you there. Otherwise, Duke and Indiana football would be doing gangbusters. The average sports fan does have some general comprehension of the marquee football (Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Florida, USC, Texas, etc.) and basketball (Duke, UNC, Kansas, Kentucky, etc.) programs.

A mediocre Duke will draw more viewers to watch a bowl game than will a very good Bowling Green, due to name-recognition. The only trouble is, Duke never qualifies for one.

True, but there's also a certain stigma against those schools. We may know Duke, but since we know them as a basketball and small private school, we naturally assume they must not be good at football and their games will hold no interest. You see a similar thing in Big East basketball. West Virginia has a storied basketball program, but over the years it had declined to a point that during their entire history in the Big East, they were viewed as exclusively as the football school with the bad basketball team. Now that the basketball team is winning games, they're still considered an afterthought.

If David Cutcliff ever gets them to qualify for a bowl, I sure hope Dick Vitale isn't on the annoucing team... 03-banghead

We do too watch football. We just have the women go down on us during commercials, so we don't miss any of the action... 03-old

I haven't seen it posted but the Las Vegas Bowl has renewed with the MWC #1 vs. the PAC-10 #5... so strike that off any hypothetical lists.

Las Vegas Bowl renews
Quote:LAS VEGAS — The top selection from the Mountain West Conference will continue to face off against the No. 5 selection from Pac-10 Conference in the Las Vegas Bowl through at least 2013 as renewal deals with both leagues were announced Monday.

The bowl game, which will stage its 18th edition this December during the last year of the current contracts, was previously in a rotation with the Emerald Bowl for its Pac-10 representative but will now have its choice of schools at that fifth spot starting in 2010.

The bowl, which is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television (ERT), is televised on ESPN. The game has matched up the leagues since 2001 with each side winning four times.

How about an sec tie for the nyc bowl, try to land the sec's spot in the indy bowl...sec fans travel well + maybe fans of those school's would rather vacation in a winter, big city climate...sell the times square thing...heck maybe the game should be new years eve at yankee stadium, kickoff around 7 and party on...if no sec, than i would try to land the big 10's team in the motor city bowl...would you rather spend your winter break in Detroit or nyc? i'm surprised that motor city bowl landed the big 10, good game for the mac but big 10 bottom should land in a better spot.
