Whatever. You should post an apology to the man and his son.

Sorry to the whole family...04-cheers

Forget that. Let it sit for all to see.

I agree. He made the decision to forgo his other opportunities to go to the Academy. What his options are now is unknown at this point. He had the chance to play basketball at three or four places and had a couple of academic scholarship offers that weren't accepted in time so those are gone. I expect that his options are limited now.
[/quote]

Well, you could share my experience.
My son decides not to play / accept scholarship. Wants to go to an SEC school. Goes. Tells the frat boys to stuff it. Comes back to the U of M at the break to go to basketball games because he can't believe the Tigers are this good when he leaves.
He sits with his old man at the games. I steal a special year with my son at an age when it doesn't happen often. The Tigers make a run.
Priceless year.
McLelland is very good grabbing lottery money at the U of M.
Suggestion.

MphsFan, there are not words to say enough how very sorry I am for this turn of events. That's all I'll say at this point.

May God bless and be with your son and all your family.

mphsfan Wrote:mphsfanson went to the Air Force Academy about 3 weeks ago. He has exercised his option to leave the Academy (and the "sure thing" future that goes with it) and return home.

I've had little communication with him, but from what I have learned he says that he made a mistake and doesn't what that lifestyle. Did homesickness and a girl enter into his decision? I suspect so. What's done is done. I have to help him move forward, if I let him live.

At least you didn't tell him he had to transfer to another school due to lack of playing time and him ending up in U of New Orleans.

mphsfan, how is the missus taking it?

BTW, I'm so sorry that he didn't realize this option was not what he wanted while his other options were still in play. Hopefully, he will look back on this decision with happiness rather than regret.

It's hard for me to comment on the situation. Just know that I hope it all works out for the best. I suspect that it will.

I just read this and can only repeat what some others have said: you can never tell how a decision will work out, even one you disagree with. Military scholarships are phenomenal to begin with, and the Air Force Academy might be best of all, but it must be right for the person. Adults must make their own decisions, though, and as parents we can only stand by and let them.

But that does not mean you can't whack him with a newspaper when nobody is looking.

What exactly is that quote supposed to mean? Of course things happen for a reason... Bill got a DIU because he got drunk and then drove.

It's an even more trite quote when really bad things happen. Just tell Natalie Holloway's family that all things happen for a reason.

So, you are implying that it is shameful or embarrassing to be gay?

This type of message does not belong here. It's not germane to the true subject at hand.

Please , no more. Thanks.

I guess everyone has their own interpretation of what that means....for me it means that God has a plan for everyone and maybe it's just not in his plan for his son to take that road. If you think it's trite then that's your right. I know mphsfan and his son and I hope he knows that I did not mean for that to sound trite, as you call it.

Not at all. I'm also not implying that it is shameful to be homesick, miss a girl or miss your parents. I'm implying that it was a very insensitive comment to someone who just wanted to vent. Anything else I can clear up for you?

I feel for you. I don't subscribe to the theory that 18-20 yo "knows what's best for them" but they have to make their own mistakes.
18-20 yo can't conceive that a few years of sacrifice (Sean Banks) will pay off for the balance of their life (I know I couldn't but it turned out ok).

From the time she started school, my oldest daughter told me she was going to be a Dr. She worked her azz off and has a full tuition scholly to a midwest school similar to Rhodes. Her freshman year she gets in a serious relationship and tells me for two years that she wants to start a family before she's too old so no medical school. They spent last term studying in Scotland together and when they got back, they broke up, so now she's interested in med school again, go figure!

All of that is to say all you can do is pick up the pieces and help him make the best decisions going forward and hope he's happy with his next choice. Best of Luck!

Sure, buddy. If this had been the quote
Quote:Maybe he was homesick, or misses a girl...or his daddy...

would you have wanted him post an apology to the man and his son?
