Thanks GT...you know me, I'm not always thinking.....03-phew

Whatever. You should post an apology to the man and his son.

So, you are implying that it is shameful or embarrassing to be gay?

Not at all, dumba$$. I'm also not implying that it is shameful to be homesick, miss a girl or miss your parents. I'm implying that it was a very insensitive comment to someone who just wanted to vent. Anything else I can clear up for you?

Sure, buddy. If this had been the quote
Quote:Maybe he was homesick, or misses a girl...or his daddy...

would you have wanted him post an apology to the man and his son?

Probably not. It's much easier to recognize a mean-spirted quote when someone is using race or sexual orientation as their vehicle. I might not have picked up on it. Anything else?

p.s. I take back the dumb*** comment. That's out of character for me, unless I'm kidding.

Whoa. Settle down Beavis. My non emoticon/short cryptic sentence response.

First, as to the initial post...I can understand the poster's frustration. As adults, and especially parents, we have endured many life experiences and want to shield our children from making similar missteps. In this particular instance, most adults understand the honor and benefit of going to a service academy, not to mention the opportunities and future benefits that would be bestowed upon a service academy grad (not to mention the educational cost benefit). That is frustrating. I guess that is the challenge of being a parent. Children don't always listen to advice, children don't do what parents know is the best thing to do.

As for the other stuff, lighten up. I was merely pointing out the irony that it is wrong to call someone gay, as if being gay is wrong. This just follows in the footsteps of many special interest groups that get upset when someone from outside that group makes a remark about that group. Watch any episode of The Office and you are bound to see Michael Scott fall into that.

Oh well, I hope no feelings were hurt, it's just a freaking messageboard.

As some have stated Mphsfan, when we feel that one door has closed God is always there to open another. He has a plan and a future for each of our lives. This verse came to mind from Jeremiah 29:11.

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."

I'm dont normally quote from the NIV, but I do like its translation of this verse...

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

Sounds like God has blessed you with a great young son and the opportunity to spend even more time together. Your family is in my prayers.

Better said than I could have Pawr. Outstanding.

Mfsfan, I'll just ditto these comments by Pawr and repeat the great son and God's blessing comments.

RE: My son just walked away from a $387,000 scholarship. How was your day?
Here is a story that might make you feel a little better. My brother tried the best he could to get into the Air Force Academy. He received all the recommendations he needed from officials, pasted the physical tests, and had a 32 on his ACT. But he had asthma for several years so he was denied and yet he still tried. After his appeal he was denied again. He was bummed for weeks and didn't know what he was going to do.
(I personally thought ,like your son, he would have changed his mind once he arrived at school. He is not the military type and I believed he would have been miserable there.)
So he took a decent scholarship to Alabama and has loved every minute of it. He is about to graduate with a degree in astrophysics. He spent last summer at Columbia University and this summer at Cornell University (he was paid well to do both research programs). Next year he hopes to be admitted to MIT.

What I am trying to say is if your son was able to get into the Air Force Academy he has the tools and ability to succeed in whatever he chooses to do. I hope he finds what he wants to do and goes after it. He will do well but it might hurt your wallet a bit. It hurt my parents but he picked up more scholarships as he went through school.

Wow, Mphsfan I haven't been on the board in awhile with summer stuff going on and all but that is kind of a shock to hear; but I know you pretty well and you, your son and the rest of the family sure appear to have their heads screwed on pretty straight...so I'm not worried about the long term outcome. Godbless ya'll.

Do you realize how difficult it must have been to walk out of the academy? Can you imagine how difficult it was to come home and face his dad face to face?

You may not think this is a wise decision. That's understandable, but one thing is certain. Your son came home as his own man. There are few greater accomplishments a father can hope for.

And he had enough confidence in his mom and dad to come home. I think that reflects well on them all.

I've had some time with him and although he made the decision to go out there, he believes he's made the right one to come home. His mantra has been that he doesn't want to lead a military lifestyle. Until he saw it in person he didn't really know what it was. He talks a good game. He'll be fine and I get more time with him.

All is well, that ends well. With all the support around for you from your friends and the guidance that you can provide, I'm sure MphsFanson will be just fine. There's a lot of opportunity out there. He can now get equipped to take advantage of it.

It's a new day ! ! 03-thumbsup

I feel your pain.

Both of my kids did the 360 degree turn around and sucked the cash right out of the bank. One has completed school and this December my last one finishes school.

I was super happy last December and will be this December. The wife and I didn't even look back on what could have been. Both of my kids are happy with what they did. (three major changes in the process)

Just saw this. Any kid nuts enough to pull something like this might just make it in this world.

It sounds like you've been a pretty understanding parent through all this. Any new news?

My rising sophomore wants to take a semester off and earn some money. Willing to work two jobs to stash some cash.
Slippery slope.
