Most schools hold up four to represent the fourth quarter, but holding up five will be much more meaningful and will forever be passed down through the years, thus never forgetting these five students.

Let us all start this tradition at the Spring Football game.
Why have you changed your mind since then? I think it would be good to keep going forever.

RE: Five Fingers
Word on this one really did spread, the vast majority of poeple were doing this by the later stages of the regular season, and it looked like just about everybody in the NIU section at the bowl game had the 5 fingers up. I vote against retiring it though. I agree with HMM that a lot of post February 14th tributes have run their course, and I think this upcoming February 14th will be a good day in the sense that it will put remembrance and permanent moving foward together in my opinion. However, I think the 5 finger thing is a unique tribute, and at the same time a good tribute to not forget what happened. Thus, I am against the idea of retiring it. I can see why HMM would like to retire it though, it's never good to see a tribute go stale, and it's possible this one could in time.

I guess I am going to just do what everyone else does at the games next year. We will see what happens. Yes, I can be a follower at times as well. 02-13-banana

Why only at football games if it is so special? It was during basketball last year when the tragedy occurred and the anniversary will occur. Maybe fans should pay the same tribute at other NIU events as well.

RE: Five Fingers
just a reminder :)

We may have to move this to another quarter or something from the information that I am getting about 3/4 quarter ....

The road crew and I had the 5 fingers at Madison.... Really reminds you what life is all about in the middle of the game, brings you back to earth sometimes.

RE: Five Fingers
I know some of you here would be fine if the five finger solute would just ride off into the sunset, but did any of you notice that some of the players held up the 5 at the start of the 4th quarter at the game yesterday? Looks like there is still some interest in having it.

not to badmouth the whole 5 finger thing, but I think to get more people involved, there needs to be some formal announcement that "this is what we will be doing during the 4th quarter to honor those that lost their lives." I bet that more than half the students and people on the west side do not know what the five fingers mean. I think if they announced it in the 4th quarter a couple of games, it would spread a lot quicker and almost become automatic over time.

I doubt they would do that. We are trying to move on as a whole and they don't want to give the impression that we are dwelling on it.

I hold up the five every game. I looked around Sat. and I was the only one. It is kind of disappointing, but I do understand not dwelling on it, but it is a small gesture on our part.

HMM, you've changed your stand on this subject since your first post:

I'm sure it will go away eventually, just like the "76" patch the players wore on their jerseys in remembrance of the player killed when that porch collapsed in Chicago. I haven't seen it on any jerseys this year. But it took a few years for that to happen.

Just wanted to get this in the right thread.

Five Fingers lives!! - niuaccy1976 - 09-20-2010 09:27 PM

I was real pleased to see this in section 209 at the Illini game. Low key, yet I heard a few people asking what it was all about. Keep it up....

Good turnout by Huskie fans, BTW.

BTN showed Harnish doing it as well.

some illini fan around us was yelling "WTF ARE ALL THESE IDIOT NIU FANS DOING"

RE: Five Fingers lives!! - chihuskie - Yesterday 08:19 AM

Those 4 hands you see down in row two are me, my wife, and my daughter as well as the lady next to us --- who was wearing an Illini t-shirt. She asked why we were doing that, and we told her, and so she joined in!
Pretty cool.

is it bad that I initially thought this thread was about the shoes...? I have been doing this at games though and assumed its meaning correctly, but never heard the full explanation until reading throught this. Also, the players and fans were doing this @ the MACC.

I have seen players do this at every game last season....in particular Chandler Harnish.
My family & I intend to continue this into the new season. Our small gesture of respect for the Huskies lost on 2/14.
