The ACC should be in Greensboro every year. Period.

WOW, The tournament is the best show of basketball next to the grandaddy of them all!!!!!

IT HAS NEVER BEEN BORING

Small southern cities: Washington? Charlotte? Tampa? Bulls fans should be questioning you. Who cares about the city, you are there to watch basketball. The environment travels with the fans. Greensboro is bumping during those days!!! You should go to one before you say such things, and don't try and lie and say you have, because if you did you would not have said that plus, none of your teams would be in the tourney anyway so you wouldn't care.

I think it should be in Greensboro every year. But the downside to the ACC tournament is that when both Duke and UNC don't make it to the Final Four of that tournament, it loses that enthusiasm you talk about rather quickly.

Now, of course, excellent basketball is usually still being played, but ACC tourney fans tend to be more 'wine and cheese' type fans, especially since the tourney tickets are basically reserved for their 'big boosters' and their families and not as much for the rowdy students who make regular season ACC games much more exciting. When it leaves Greensboro this is much more noticeable as seen when it was in Tampa last year.

Luckily, for the most part, Duke and UNC tend to make the Final Four of the ACC tourney in most years, but even BC players last year in Tampa commented about the totally different atmosphere between the ACC tourney crowds and the more rowdy MSG crowds.

Of course beer being sold at MSG helps. 03-wink

Does the ACC tournament even permit beer sales?

Cheers,
Neil

To be fair, New York is a destination city. Nowhere in the ACC's footprint is there a city that compares with it. The closest would be Orlando, but that's really a family vacation destination compared to New York, which offers something for everybody.

USFFan

True, only LA can compare to NY, but the city should not make the tourney.

I agree to a certain extent. But, let's say you're a BC basketball fan and you plan to attend the ACC tournament in Greensboro. Your team gets eliminated in the first game. You're not enough of a general basketball fan to care about the games that don't involve your team - what are you supposed to do? Go explore the night life in Greensboro for 3 days? If you're in New York, you can still do "half a million things, even at a quarter to 3." In Greensboro, maybe you can go back to the hotel and watch porn.

USFFan

Yup closing time ain't until 4 AM if you needed to drown your sorrows after said loss. And try village bars near NYU if you're early 30s and under the prices are very fair and the scene is great.

LA may have the market but they have no where near the interest in college basketball that NY does. the Pac ten tournament in the staples center is a snooze fest with plenty of empty seats.

Funny, we say the same about you.

Most of us are grown men around here. Why is it that you feel the need to jump in to take up for your "brethren" everytime I post something? I'm sure that he can take up for himself. It's funny...the same two or three rubes are the only folks who ever seem to have a problem with me on this board.

The TV ratings for the BIG EAST tourny the last few years have been amazing, so that is why ESPN televising all the BIG EAST tourny games. The huge media markets in the BIG EAST have paid dividends.

I believe it is a combination of 4 factors:

1) the media markets
2) the overall quality of play in the league
3) limiting the tourney to 12. Let's face it, for other 12-team leagues, 5-12 is usually a bore. But the Big East's 5 vs 12 is going to produce a solid game.
4) the wide variety of playing styles in the Big East - the loss of Beilein will hurt this somewhat - but still overall - it is an interesting mix of playing styles that usually produce exciting match-ups.

Cheers,
Neil

Yeah but that loss of Beilein was replaced by Bobby Huggins. Huggins has more or a media profile than John Beilien. Bobby Huggins brings more excitement for the fans to all the teams with his antics on the sidelines. WVU replaced Beilien with one of the best candidates that they could have hoped for in Huggins.

Oh, I have no doubt Huggins brings a more exciting style. But his style is not unique to the Big East. Other teams in the league play a similar style to the one he coaches.

My point is that Beilein's style was totally unique, and that with his loss, the league loses some of that variety that point #4 was talking about.

Still with Boeheim's 2-3 zone, Thompson's Princeton style offense with great athletes, Wright's 'small ball', Pitt's methodical half-court sets, Calhoun's defensive pressure and run-and-gun offense - there is still a lot of variety - it is just lessened somewhat with the absence of Beilein's 1-3-1 zone and motion offense.

Big East teams having to face so many variety of styles should continue to help come NCAA tourney time.

Cheers,
Neil

That's great to see! I try watching some ACC Tourney games every year and I just don't enjoy it. More often than not you don't see UNC/Duke...you see Florida State/Georgia Tech or Virginia/Clemson.

It also shows how ACC's Raycom/LFS regional TV deals screw the conference because they are entitled to tourney games and clearly that's not national. The Big East is ESPN's baby...and they do all of our regional games too.

The BE Tourney just has a much more intense feeling and the games have so much meaning...either about redemption or making a statement or fighting for a NCAA bid. I get the feeling in the ACC tournament like the team's don't really care all that much about winning...but in the BE Tourney, it's a huge prize to win the conference.

Very good point. BC is an outsider and shouldn't be in the ACC. It is the way it is, that's why it sucks and the tourney rotates.

You would not know this according to the tv ratings. Besides that is only your own opinion. The Acc's highest profile coach seems to disagree with you, however. At least MSG is pretty much full for every single game. You cant say that about the Acc tourney. And I would'nt be on this board and calling someone out presuming that they are going to lie, if I were you. Besides, have you ever been to a BE tourney? If not, dont try and tell us the the Acc tourney is the best.
For years now, the BE tourney has had every single game televised.

Okay, well I will never change my opinion and you will never change yours. We have the greatest basketball rivalry with a chance those schools meet in the tourney finals, beat that.

All Coach K said was he didn't like the rotation, and I agreed.

03-melodramatic Yet another display of ignorance and stubbonness by esayem. Did you ever hear of double..ughh...I mean TRIPLE posting? It's bad posting etiquette.

Thanks USFFan for bringing up that point. New York is the hub of the East Coast and is a pretty fair meeting ground for most of the Big East teams (aside from the midwest schools and USF). The city does not make the tournament, but it sure helps.

That being said...the physical style of play in the Big East is what makes the conference distinguished and enjoyable to watch, and that is what shines the brightest at the BE Tourney. From the ACC Tourney games I've watched...they just don't have that same level...and it helps when the building is filled, as is the case at MSG 03-nerner

Okay, the ACC isn't physical. Wow, ignorance.

Greensboro — HE LIKES CHARLOTTE: Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski certainly has some good memories of ACC Tournaments in Charlotte, which will host the 2008 version — he's won the last three there. But Krzyzewski believes that the conference should ditch the rotating venue model.

"I would like for our conference to have one site, wherever we think that site would be good, and then make that site as unbelievable as possible," Krzyzewski said. "I think the Big East has a huge advantage. They go to New York and it's at Madison Square Garden, and Madison Square Garden, it's not bad.

No, I threw out facts, not opinions. The BE tourney generates enouigh interest even on the first day to fill up MSG. The Acc doesnt. Every single BE game has been televised for years. Those are not opinions.

I wouldnt say the Duke/UNC is the greatest rivalry, but it is the most hyped rivalry at this time. There are many other rivalries that are just as intense. Up until the mid nineties, it was Syracuse/Georgetown getting the most hype. Like the Syracuse/Georgetown rivalry, it only takes a prolonged period of being down by one of the rilvalry schools before it starts to lose interest nationally. Its the most hyped now, but will it continue?

You guys like the Big East tourney better, that's fine, I understand why. I like the ACC more, and that should be fine too.

I see the Big East as an equal, but of course I like my conference more. I can't give you facts as to why one tourney is better based on money and beer. We drink hennessy in the games via gas station cups.

MSG would much rather have a basketball tournament with FB schools than Catholic schools. Although GTOWN is making a comeback so Catholic schools plus ND might have some draw. However, a tournament with UCONN, CUSE, PITT, Cincy, UL and WVU has some kick to it.

BTW, BE is a better basketball conference no matter how you want to spin it. By going to 12, ACC is no longer the greatest basketball conference like ACC fans think. Look no further than last year's NCAA for proof.
