You're gonna have to explain to me how the success of Toyota is somehow tied to global warming, nancy.

I bet you were a jewel in that capacity. Bet they didn't have the information super highway back then huh. Yeah it is easy to do. Again I can walk and chew gum. Right now, I'm not in school. I also post at night. Right now I'm actually teaching about Global Warming. It's a part of our standards. I bet I could even have my union president argue that what I am doing here, even during school time would be relevant. I could just print out this entire thread and have my kids discuss it. I'm even going to have them watch an Inconvient Truth and do a paper over it. And when they don't agree with me I'm going to lower their grade............................................... I joke... I joke. Usually the kids who do their own research and try to find their own meaning are the most intelligent ones. So even having this discussion raises awareness, to which I am thankful. Thankful during this Holiday Season. Oh wait with the war on Christmas, Thankful during this Christmas Season.

Owl,

I mean this, I'm being sincere. Your an intelligent man and I like your posts, but in today's educational system it's not really hard to do what I am doing. Especially during Study Halls. I also have a conference. I don't take lunches so that's an extra hour there. It may seem to you that I'm posting on here too much during the school day, but it truly is a part of my curriculum. Especially Global Warming. Now we've had two of these conversations and it's no problem on my end. I've already graded the tests I gave today. Tuesday is our next testing day. Monday, Wed, and Friday I won't be able to post 1,2,3, 5 or 7th periods. The other times I can post at any time, not a problem. Conference, lunch and two Study Halls. Life is good with my schedule. Some teacher's have it better some have it worse. I'm top guy in seniority in my department, so I pretty much pick the classes I want to teach. It's great. Have a good one.

My SB time was in the 70's, so I'm sure things have changed.

I was a student in the early 60's, and i had a study hall in the library. All hell broke loose whenever the teacher stepped out. I guess kids today will just keep studying. I guess that's your story and you're sticking to it.

Doesn't surprise me at all that your union would back it. I was thinking more of your employers, the taxpayers, and their representatives, the school board members and administrators.

I guess when you say you can chew gum and walk at the same time that you are saying that you can give 100% to your employer and do your evangelizing too. I don't buy that. Maybe it is a high percentage, but you are not giving 100%. If one of your students told you he could listen to your lecture and text message at the same time, would you buy it? Just be consistant.

It does bother me that you are teaching GW to impressionable students, as you don't appear to the type to give a balanced view. Allowing a student a different view is not the same as giving a balanced view.

But my problem is not with your curriculum, it is with your values. You are teaching those kids by example, and the example you are setting is one of getting away with less than is required. I wonder how many of them in the next 30 or so years will excuse slacking off on the job by saying, "I can walk and chew gum at the time time. Mr X my high school teacher did it all the time and I admire him a lot".

I'm sure that if a Republican official at any level was using government time and resources for private reasons, you would be telling us about how corrupt they are.

is it a big thing, that one teacher in one school slacks off? No. Is it a big thing that he defends it? Somewhat bigger. Is it a big thing that he attacks others on moral lapses? Getting bigger. Tell us more of the corruption that you hate so much. I hate the double standard - Dems attacking Foley, defending Studds. Dems condemming corruption, supporting Hastings. Reps attacking spending, then spending. This is just a minor league case of the same thing.

Enough. You go on stealing taxpayer's time. I will (silently from now on) go on considering you a thief and a hypocrite.

BTW, you seem intelligent too. I have trouble sometimes discerning when you are posting your beliefs and when you are just trying to stir the pot.

The two Study Halls I monitor are in the Libary/SH. We have 30 computers in there. My one Study Hall only has 7 kids. It's 8th period end of the day type and usually the kids just research and finish typing up their work. I sit on a computer monitor right with them. I also have a program that lets me see their screen. So your a hard ass the first three weeks of school. Give out plenty of detentions don't smile til Thanksgiving and the kids pretty much police themselves. This is my 14th year and I know I'm fortunate to be in the school that I am in. We graduated 46 kids last year and 12 of them went the vocational route. The kids are really good kids who do their work and generally follow the rules. Kids are kids and they will test boundaries, but you whack and whack em hard and they fall right in line. It truly isn't a problem. Now if I was day trading or playing internet poker. I definetly could see your side, but with the spin room. I have used a couple of things in here in my teachings. I sometimes take for granted things like stem cells and GW. I like to tell kids the other side and let them formulate their own meaning. Especially on controversial subjects. Stem cells especially. Genetic Testing, Quality of life vs. Quantity of life. etc.....

Why are Honda and Toyota handing our asses to us?

How much money do we spend each year importing oil?

Better gas mileage and better value for money. Blame the liberal unions. Your point? We spend a lot of money importing oil, that is, the oil companies, which we, in turn, purchase. What does that have to do with global warming, Nancy?

Let me expand upon your answer to the first question....

Honda and Toyota have a reputation for being well-made cars. They are priced better, get better mileage, depreciate slower, and come with more comprehensive warranties. You can see the warranty/price problems come into effect if you visit a Kia dealership. If you buy a minivan they'll give you a Kia Rio FREE. Each vehicle will come with a 100,000 mile / 10 year warranty. You can get a Kia Rio brand new for under $5,000. My local Toyota dealership now offers a LIFETIME warranty on select models. Why is America behind? Three reasons:
1) Failure to improve gas mileage. My '94 Mitsubishi Galant LS gets nearly 30 mpg highway. He we are 12 years later and most American companies *brag* about 30 mpg highway.
2) Failure to innovate. It seems like Detroit's idea of improving vehicles is making them bigger, and throwing in more gimmicky features that ultimately don't pertain to the fundamental purpose of the car (OnStar, etc).
3) Work Unions. It's isn't overseas labor that is driving the foreign auto maker. It's southern American labor. In the South unions are very weak, and aren't even recognized in most states. As a result, free market forces set reasonable wages. There's a brand new state of the art Hyundai plant in freakin' Alabama. I live about 20 minutes from a BMW plant that produces every BMW SUV and Z Roadster in the world. They chose a great location (Greer, SC) for the plant. They are right at I-26 and I-85. A 4 hour drive down I-26 and you're in Charleston Harbor for international overseas freight. They even extended Greenville-Spartanburg Int'l Airport runways just so BMW could fly out jumbo cargo planes.

I know the margin on the SUV's are what drives the Big 3, but they need to design better cars. I think foreign cars just look better and have better features. You guys won't want to hear this, but the auto execs say it's because of their legacy costs. The main one health insurance for their employees. Their competition don't have the same problem because they have socialized medicine.

You won't be able to blame the unions in a couple of years. They are buying them all out. Look at Visteon and Delphi. They buy out a union worker and then from the front door they hire an 18 yr. old for 12 dollars an hour with limited benefits. I always ask my kids if they think 12 dollars an hour is a good job, about 75% of my class raise their hands. I then ask them if they would like to work for 24,000 a year. No one raises their hands. It's funny.

Agreed, that's funny. I think kids have too high of expectations about what kind of money they should be making out of school (HS or college).
