And in comparison to someone who speaks Oxford English, all Americans, even the rest of the Anglophonic world, sound like savage fools with lack of vocabulary skills.

Do you generally speak in slang?

On occasion with family and friend I will through out some slang. At work and in social situation where it is inappropriate, I do not. This is one of the things that I am trying to teach my son. I make sure that he realizes that he cannot talk to me in the same language that he uses with his friends.

What do you think of PTNC's attempts at slang?

As long as he is not being disrespectful it is fine.

What about the "N" word?

I think both blacks and whites give the word too much power. Being older, I know most of the time when I use it, it is in a derogatory manner. Lately there does seem to be a movement to use it in more positive manner our rapper buddies, but for me it will always have a connotation as a racial slur when heard from someone nonblack.

you guys need to lay off of Endzone. He tried to have an intelligent discussion. Problem is, he's not experienced enough at this specific conversation to know how to properly phrase his questions.

Really? When I see a white guy tossing out some bad slang, I see it more as Vanilla Ice.

Bullet Tooth Tony: A bookie's got blagged last night.
Avi: Blagged? Do me a favor, Tony, speak English. I thought this country spawned the ******* language, and so far nobody seems to speak it.

You beat me to it, uhmump. I was wondering why Endzone couldn't just speak like a regular person and not use phrases like "Ya'll."

Seriously, it is just a dialect, in my opinion. I don't see how this is any different than Native Americans who still keep their language alive, or immigrants who still speak their native tounges in their homes. There's really nothing "wrong" with it. If I go to Philly, it might take me a few minutes to figure out that I need to ask for a glass of wooder.

Immigrants who are trying to keep alive their native tougue are not speaking a variation of English, so it is not a dialect.

Most dialects are regional: people in the South speak differently those in the North, who in turn speak differently from those in the Midwest, West, Australia, Wales, Scotland, etc.

Ebonics is not regional: it is racial in character. But it is not an attempt to preserve old languages. I think it is more of an attempt to create a new one. Witness the resentment toward whites messing up black speech - the Vanilla Ice blaming. It seems to me that Ebonics is just another way to separate the races - not integrate them. Maybe some of y'all (used on purpose) know - did MLK, Jr, use Ebonics in his private discussions? He certainly didn't in his public speaking.

Comparing "homies" to "y'all" is really apples and oranges. IMO.

As far as being thought of as an uneducated caucasian redneck ouside of Fort Worth, I thought uneducated was part of the stereotype of redneck, for those who prefer stereotypes. I think the usage of y'all is much more widespread than Ft Worth. But what do I know - I'm just a mostly caucasian redneck with a master's degree living just outside Ft. Worth. Clearly not someone who should have an opinion, much less express it.

FYI, the word "redneck", like "gay" has changed in meaning over the last few decades. It used to refer to farmers - people who worked hard 7-24 to support themselves and their families. Probably they were uneducated, but they were as decent a group as you could find. I think in the 60's it became a blanket word for "white guy", and now is used for "racist".

I think we have reached a point in which a person asking sincere questions, like endzone2 did, is judged by the color of his skin, and replied to based on that skin color. I saw only one person give a serious response to him. Do his questions lack merit because of his race?

I see more than one serious response to this question. Some of those serious responses may have been interspersed with sarcastic comments, but they are there. You obviosuly felt the need to respond to mine, so I guess you think mine ws the only serious response?

Quote:Immigrants who are trying to keep alive their native tougue are not speaking a variation of English, so it is not a dialect.
I realize that languages and dialects are not the same thing. I was just using it as an example, as there are no other equivalents to ebonics.

Quote:I think we have reached a point in which a person asking sincere questions, like endzone2 did, is judged by the color of his skin, and replied to based on that skin color.
It may have been a sincere question but as pointed out above, he was not judged because of his skin color, he was judged based on the confrontational manner in which he asked it.

If I asked something like "How do (you) Catholics like raping alter boys?" I would expect a Catholic to take offense. I may be serious in my inquisitivness about the whys of Pedophilia in the Catholic Church, but do you expect Catholics to answer in a understanding tone?

Is Graybeard black? I guess it doesn't matter, his comment was in jest, I think.

Nope, GB is an old redneck (non-racist meaning) honky. I am guilty of trying to keep this thread light and airy. With the way the question was asked, I didn't want it turning into a racial slam thing. It is a valid question, just poorly worded.

Ebonics is not an attempt to create a new language. Ebonics is slang, it is simple as that. It is similar to the "groovy", "gnarly", and "dudes" you used to hear in 60's surfer movies.

As for your MLK question, I would not doubt it if MLK used some slang in his non public like. Back in those days blacks were taught to have two faces, one they showed to each other and one they showed in public.

OptimisticOwl Wrote:Comparing "homies" to "y'all" is really apples and oranges. IMO.

To me "y'all" is slang just like "homies". It doesn't matter if the group using it is southern whites or urban blacks. Slang is slang, it is not a different language.

I agree with this, which is the reason at the beginning of this thread I gave ez2 an honest answer. But as you can see by his reply, he is not interested in honest dialogue, because he has not offered any, not even including his original post.

Optimistic,

I apologize for my comments. I certainly wasn't trying to call you or any of the other DFW folks out. I was aware that Endzone2 does or did live in the Ft. Worth area and therefore wanted to spin his question in a different way to see if it offended him. I probably did not do it in a very tactful manner. For the most part this yankee loves the people (and the winter weather) down here. Drop me a line and I'll buy you a pop (that's yankee for Coke) or other frosty beverage.

There have been those who have wanted Ebonics taught in the public schools as a separate language. But I was really thinking more of the attitude expressed above, that white folks are really messing up some good slang. It's saying that it is black thing, whites keep away. It is a divider between the races.

There is a difference between slang and dialect. Dialect includes grammar rules that are different from the main language as well as words that are different. Chick can be slang for female, but it isn't dialect. "She is a chick", "she be a chick", and "she a chick" are all examples of dialects, as they all invove different rules for the verb "is". (And no, it doesn't depend on what your definition of "is" is - ;-) )

As for Endzone2, I just felt that there would be a very different response to his questions, however phrased, if he were black. And I am not talking about the answers, just the reaction to the fact of the asking.

Y'all is used by southerners generally, not just white southerners.

Those people are idiots plain and simple.

I was joking about the "whites messing up some slang" quotes in an attempt to lighten the mood about a subject that could go bad very quickly.

As for ez2, chack some of his other deep questions about race. When you attempt to have a conversation with him, he turtles up and you never hear from him.
