I just bought a case of cab at the store adjacent to Costco Germantown for $3.99 per.

Went to the store next to Costco today at lunch...they have the kind of tequila I get for pretty cheap, so I looked around at their wine while I was there:

Penfold's brands for 6.99/bottle
Barefoot brands for 4.99/bottle
Crane Lake brands for 3.99/bottle.
They also had a 1/5 of Malibu run for 11.99...

and, I got the Lindeman's at Buster's yesterday for 4.99/bottle as well.

Barefoot has a pretty good Pinot Grigio......

I'll second saluki blue's suggestion. Concho y Toro cab sauv is good stuff. Another tasty one is Haywood, a California cab sauv.

Chi-TownTiger Wrote:This is weird. I just drove home from the Central Coast of CA yesterday. On the way, I passed through dozens of vineyards on Route 46 around Paso Robles. I didn't know they grew wine there. I thought the vineyards were closer to Santa Barbara. The biggest was Merridean (sp?). Wine tasting signs up and down the highway. Felt like 'Sideways' What a beautiful area.

As for inexpensive wines, Clos du Bois (sp?) is pretty good if you like Chardonay.

Best cab I ever had was Duckhorn. It's under 10 bucks if you stuff it in your pants and have a friend around for a decoy. While you're at it grab a bottle of Cakebread.

The Liberty School that a couple of us have mentioned is made in Paso Robles. Clos Du Bois also has some wicked wines. Meridian has a Chardonnay that has a lot of oak and a smoky taste that is really good for under $10.

homefry20 Wrote:For those of you who like reds I would highly recommend the Root 1 Cabernet from Chile. Full bodied with a lot of cherry flavor. $13. Another light bodied red for around that price would be te Gnarly Head Zinfandel (This is a red Zin, not white or blush.) Its an old vine Zin witha smooth taste and a nice finish. $11.

As for a white, I would go with the Kim Crawford Marlborough (AUS) Sauvignon Blanc. Nice and dry as are most from Aussie but easy to drink as well. $13.

I'm really glad you made this post. Kim Crawford was a wine I've been trying to remember since I had it last year. I was on vacation in CA and there was a small Vons grocery store that had it on display in their wine section. I asked one of the employees what he would suggested and he said all the locals were always asking for it. Great wine.

I asked my wife if she could remember the name. I said to her it was some wine from Australia with a womens name like Karen or Cathy. It was driving us both nuts. I highly recommend this one too. Now I can ask for it here in town.

The pricing is a bit different in Canada. Kim Crawford is actually from New Zealand. He was the host of a wine tasting that I attended a couple of years ago. It was surprising what a good guy he was; very outgoing and enthusiastic. I didn't list the Kim Crawford because I couldn't have imagined it being around $10. For this same price range Oyster Bay and Forrest Estate are two other New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs that are excellent.

Sure, if you like huge headaches the next day.

You shouldn't expect anything less when you drink a glorified wine cooler. It does have a nice strawberry taste to it though, and I think it's pretty good for what it is.

I had some of the Concho cab at a very nice Italian restaurant in Arlington, TX last night and it was quite good. It was their house wine so I grabbed the opportunity to try it. I also picked up two inexpensive Australian Pinot Noirs last night at a local retail outlet. This is my first time to try any Australian Pinot's and will let you all know what I think of them once I uncork them. I hear YELLOW TAIL has started importing Pinot Noir's to the US recently but have yet to be able to find any for sale here. Anyone know anything about this Pinot?

New Zeland and Australia are relatively new to the Pinot Noir scene...the wines are kinda fuity (which isn't a good or bad thing) and young.

FIY, Yellowtail does not have their own vineyard, they buy reserves from other vineyards and bottle it as theirs. That is why their wine is so inexpensive.

My wine comes in a box. Franzia Sunset Blush, or Vella or Franzia White Zinfindel.
04-rock 02-13-banana 04-rock

Mine too. Franzia Chablis 5 ltrs for 10.99 is a good deal. And it's a decent tasting wine as well.

I don't drink wine very often, but I was wondering what size bottle or box you refered to?

My wife and I were in Hong Kong a few weeks ago and we bought a bottle of greatwall cabernet sauvignon 1995. It cost 155.00 hong kong dollars. Sounds like a lot but it is only a little over 20.00 US currency. I don't know if local stores stock it, but it was a very smooth wine and if you can find it, I would recommend it.

There are thousands of vintners that do this. Yellowtail's Shiraz is an inexpensive legend at under $10. Rosenblum; which is one of the 3 major Zinfandel makers still uses grapes from other vineyards to make some of its wines.

Kim Crawford was mentioned earlier. In the first years, Kim Crawford didn't even have a vineyard. All of the grapes they used were purchased from other vineyards.

Yellow Tail is probably my favorite brand of any type of wine. Just about everything they produce is good quality. Chardonnay is excellent, and of their reds, my Wife and I enjoy the Shiraz Grenache. They also make a pretty good Pinot Grigio, but it is not as widely available......

Chateau Ste Michelle Pinot Gris and Chardonnay are also excellent and fall in this same price range.

Yes the Kim Crawford was around $15 if I remember right. But it was in South Bay L.A. area and I'm sure It was overpriced. As for Liberty School, I'll have to give it a try. Sounds very good.

This thread is the main reason why I miss working at Busters. It was a great experience to taste the wines from around the globe. I knew the good new ones and got to try the specials.
