My prediction is that the one person who walks away from all of this whole, and with a few million in pocket change, is none other than the affable leader, Mike Heisley. The smile in your face suspect in this docudrama from day one. That said ... can you blame a guy for taking advanage of opportunities presented? And, on the buyer's end, I agree with Calkins, paying 350 million for this franchise is insane, unless, of course, "other plans" are in the works as we speak. I 'suspect' that if this sale is approved, Jerry West will be perfunctorily shown the door and Gasol will get his wish and play elsewhere. Just hope the new owners, if this goes through, also have the bucks to pay off the FedEx Forum mortgage. If not, it might get ugly.

why would it be a surprise that the owner of the team would make millions when he sold the team? -- I suspect he intended to make money the entire time!!!! 04-jawdrop 03-melodramatic 05-mafia

West will be gone as well as a lot of the top staff --- why do you think Gasol would be traded?

Not exactly sure why this was moved to the 'Not Tiger Related' forum. The Tigers and the Grizzlies are like Coke and Pepsi IMO ... not the same entities, but what happens to one certainly affects the market and future prospects of the other. Otherwise (tax money aside) I'd be indifferent on the whole Grizzly, MATA / FedEx garage, FedEx concession money, and ownership sell and take the money schemes ... :)

Gasol said something along the lines of 'that he wanted to be traded if the Grizzlies weren't committed to winning.' A statement like that doesn'tt help morale even if the owners are spending the money. If the Davis group aren't going to AT LEAST spend what the former ownership spent, I'd think that results would be no better under the best scenario, and probably sends the message that the future will be worse. I'd think Gasol would want to be traded and the savings on salary garnered by the new owners would make that wish a reality.

Update information on the new owners:http://memphis.bizjournals.com/memphis/s...st=b_ln_hl

Seems like the ESPN article was a little off base.

Seems like the ESPN article was a little off base.

Well they did report something about 180 degrees different.

Here's the updated deal ... as I read it.

The Davis group will stop the Grizzlie's financial bleeding

While paying 360 million to Heisley for the majority share of the Grizzlies

And offering West a "lifetime contract"

And investing up to a billion dollars in local projects

And keeping Mike Fratello as the Grizzlies head coach.

And best of all, Heisley is giving the profit he makes off the sale to charity! Said so himself ...
Quote:"I hope people don't think I'm getting out because I lost a lot of money. Nobody knows what I did or didn't lose," Heisley said. "When I first came here, I said I wasn't coming here to make money. I wanted to use the team as a vehicle for philanthropy."

What Gasol elaborated on later is that he would rather win in Memphis, but if he couldn't, and if the franchise was going in the wrong direction, then he would consider other options to pursue a ring. Not unusual at all, imo.

for now, though, I don't see him going anywhere.
